The prewar progenitor of the keiretsu, the zaibatsu, however, could fairly be described as groups, and, in their relatively sharp boundaries, hierarchical structure, family control, and close ties to the state were structurally similar to business groups elsewhere in the world. With the break-up by the U. S. Occupation of the largest member firms, the purging of their executives, and the outlawing of the holding company structure that held them together, the zaibatsu were transformed into quite different business entities, what we and other literature call “network forms” of organization (Podolny and Page, 1998; Miyajima, 1994). -

The question of whether the ban on holding companies should be lifted has been hotly debated for years , but the primary concern is that this might lead to a revival of the z αib αtsu and promote a more concentrated market structure. This unusual provision stipulating that “the esュ tablishment of holding companies shall be prohibited" (Anti-Monopoly Act , Article 9) was enacted in the first place to prevent the reemergence of the z αib αtsu , which had enormous controlling power on the prewar Japanese economy. Yet considerable time has passed since the z αib αtsu were dismantled by the occupation forces right after the war , and the z αibatsu no longer exist in present-day Japan. The specific objects of conュ cern in the debate over lifting the ban on holding companies , therefore , are the new corュ porate conglomerates that have emerged after the war , the so-called Big Six corpor αte combines. The Big Six combines whose existence cannot be ignored have been subjected to close scrutiny , and the debates continue as to what , if any , affect the lifting of the ban on holding companies will have on these giant corporate aggregates. -

Calling on the Japanese Government to Raise Its 2030 Renewable Energy Target to 40-50%
18th January 2021 Calling on the Japanese government to raise its 2030 renewable energy target to 40-50% With commitments by EU countries, Japan, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, and with the United States intending to join this year, ‘carbon neutral by 2050’ has become a common goal of more than 120 countries around the globe. Key to meeting the goal is the promotion of a rapid and significant expansion of renewable energy along with improvements in energy efficiency. EU countries and U.S. states have already set progressive goals to be reached by 2030, ranging from 40-74% share in each electricity mix. In contrast, Japan’s target shares of renewable energy for fiscal 2030 electricity mix is 22- 24%. In order for Japan to meet its responsibilities to be one of the leaders in global efforts, the target needs to be much more ambitious. An ambitious target will stimulate renewable energy deployment, and Japanese companies will be able to play a greater role in the global business environment, where decarbonization is accelerating. It will enable Japanese companies more committed to the challenge of mitigating the climate crisis. We, as part of the global business community, call for the renewable energy target for fiscal 2030 to be revised from 22-24% to 40-50% in the next Strategic Energy Plan formulated this year. INTRODUCTION International joint ventures come in a multitude of sizes and shapes.' In certain cases, a joint venture is a partnership, in others it is a corporation. In various countries, it is even possible to have a 2 joint venture. Far from being a negative, though, the flexibility of the joint ven- ture concept is one of its principle virtues. In turn, flexibility is essen- tial in developing a joint venture relationship. Flexibility is also a critical component in the professional work-whether business devel- opment, finance or legal-required to organize and initiate a joint venture. A flexible approach will almost always result in the best pos- sible outcome-for all concerned. Just as flexibility is critical to structuring and negotiating joint ventures, fairness to both parties is crucial to the implementation and operation of the enterprise. Driving too hard a bargain in joint ven- ture negotiations will be self-defeating. The joint venture will fail if not negotiated with a view toward balancing the parties' goals, espe- cially when their goals may be in direct competition. 3 Likewise, a t Michael E. Through collectively owned and democratically governed assets, communities can build wealth. Economic development policy and practice should emphasize wealth creation. Employee ownership, through worker cooperatives is one way to build wealth. But worker cooperatives are rare in the United States; this is because there is not a supportive cooperative ecosystem.
