Australoheros ykeregua sp. nov. is described from the tributaries of the río Uruguay in Misiones province, Argentina. Australoheros angiru sp. nov. is described from the tributaries of the upper rio Uruguai and middle rio Iguaçu in Brazil. The two new species are not closely related, A. yke- regua is the sister species of A. forquilha Říčan and Kullander, while A. angiru is the sister species of A. minuano Říčan and Kullander. The diversity of the genus Australoheros is reviewed using morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. These analyses suggest that the described species diversity of the genus in the coastal drainages of SE Brazil is overestimated and that many described species are best undestood as representing cases of intraspecific variation. The dis- tribution patterns of Australoheros species in the Uruguay and Iguazú river drainages point to historical connections be- tween today isolated river drainages (the lower río Iguazú with the arroyo Urugua–í, and the middle rio Iguaçu with the upper rio Uruguai). -

Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary,, Route 1208, Greate Road, Gloucester Point VA 23062, USA * correspondence to [email protected] SUUMMARY A non-native cichlid fish firstly repo rted in Portugal in 1940 was originally identified as Cichlasoma facetum (Jenyns 1842) based on specimens reported from “Praia de Mira" (Vouga drainage, northwestern Portugal). Currently, the species is known only from three southern Portuguese river drainages, namely Sado, Arade and Gua- diana, and no other record has been made from Praia de Mira or the Vouga drainage since the original record. The genus Cichlasoma has since suffered major taxonomic revisions: C. facetum has been conssidered a species-complex and proposed as the new genus Australoheros, including many species. Given the currennt taxonomic re- arrangement of the C. facetum species group, we performed a taxonomic re- evaluation of species identity of this non-native cichlid in Portuguese drainages us- ing morphological and molecular analyses. Morphological data coollected on speci- mens sampled in the Sado river drainages confirmed the identification as Australo- heros facetus. -

Here we examined whether divergence or convergence in dietary niche occurred when invasive Lepomis gibbosus and Australoheros facetus coexist in Iberian streams. We used stomach content analyses to determine dietary niche composition, width, and overlap in allopatric and sympatric counterparts in the Lower Guadiana throughout the dry-season. The variations in dietary niche between pumpkinseed and the cichlid were consistent with predictions derived from the niche divergence hypothesis. Although there were no changes in the use of plant material from allopatry to sympatry in either species, sympatric pumpkinseed and the cichlid displayed marked shifts in the use of animal prey and a decrease in niche width relative to allopatric counterparts. -

Please follow reprint instructions at http://www.faas.info/2008_publication_awards_winners.html#reprintpolicy They’re Not Just Convicts Anymore By Daniel Spielman All Photos by Daniel Spielman Introduction Convicts get no respect, with many a cichlidophile turning up his or her nose at the sight of a group on Convicts in a tank or a bag of fry in an auction. It’s time for that to change. Easy to breed and exhibiting wonderful parental care, Convict cichlids (Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus) have long been staples in the hobby. Indeed, for many new fishkeepers, the satisfaction of watching a pair of Convict parents herd a group of fry around a tank sparks the initial desire to keep other mem bers of the cichlid family. Indeed, my fish cichlids were Convicts, and watch ing them care for their fry definitely got me hooked. The contrast with trying to keep guppies or swordtails from eating their own offspring is striking (how did eating one’s own young ever evolve in the first place?). However, the very fact that Convicts spawn so readily in the aquarium causes many hobbyists to quickly lose interest in the species. Although Convicts occasionally appear on experienced hobbyists’ lists of most favorite cichlid, the problem is they are just too common and too easy to breed. Typical Convict spawning jokes involve two fish and a wet paper towel, and one often feels fortunate to break the $1 barrier at the auction to avoid the indignity of having to bring one’s fish back home again at the end of the monthly club meeting. -

This presents a unique challenge in fishes, given their extraordinary morphological diversity and their complex fluid-structure interactions. This challenge is compounded by the fact that fishes with varying anatomy also use different kinematics, making it difficult to disentangle the effects of morphology and kinematics on performance. My dissertation used interdisciplinary methods to study evolutionary variation in body shape with respect to its consequences for swimming performance. In Chapter 1, I used bio-inspired mechanical models of caudal fins to study the effects of two evolutionary trends in fish morphology, forked tails and tapered caudal peduncles, on swimming performance. -

The species is distinguished from its riverine Congo River basin congeners by the following unique combination of characters: thorax partially naked, i.e. without small scales; 16 scales around caudal peduncle; and an upper lateral line with 23 scales. Résumé Une nouvelle espèce, ‘ Haplochromis ’ snoeksi , est décrite d’une seule localité, le village Ngeba sur la rivière Ngeba/Ngufu, un affluent de la rive droite de l’Inkisi (Bas-Congo; République Démocratique du Congo).
