A Movement on the Verge: The Spark of Stonewall The night of Saturday, June 28, 1969, the streets of Central Greenwich Village were crowded with angered gay men, lesbians, “flame queens”, and Trans*genders. 1 That was the second day of disorder of what would later be called the Stonewall Riots. Centering around Christopher Street’s bar for homosexuals, the Stonewall Inn, the riots began the night before on June 27 and lasted until July 2. These five days of rioting were the result of decades of disdain against the police force and the general population that had oppressed the gay inhabitants of New York City. -

The Stonewall Riots: How They Broke Barriers In LGBT+ Activism Claire Winter Junior Division Historical Paper Student-composed Words: 1646 Process Paper: 334 words 1 The gay rights movement is often overlooked in its role as a crucial civil rights movement. The movement’s first stirrings began as early as 1924, but the Stonewall Riots are arguably one of the most well-known and most influential events in the fight for LGBT+ rights. On June 28, 1969, police raided Stonewall Inn1 (a gay bar) in Greenwich Village, New York. The patrons of the Inn, some of whom were arrested, began to riot at the unfair treatment. These riots continued for five more days, and became a major turning point marking the more modern change of LGBT+ rights, with the first pride parade taking place on the one-year anniversary of the raid on the Inn. Even today, it is hailed as one of the most major events in the movement’s history. Background In 1969, the year the riots took place, LGBTQ+ and other nonconforming people were still heavily discriminated against. Homosexuality and the act of same-sex intercourse was still illegal, being considered sodomy in 49 out of 50 states2 (excepting Illinois, which struck down its law in 19613). The consequences ranged from fines to possible arrest and imprisonment throughout the country. After WWII, those suspected of being gay in the military were discharged dishonorably. In 1953, President Eisenhower signed an executive order adding ‘sexual perversion’ as a ground for investigation in employment. In nearly all states, professional licenses could be either denied or revoked to people based on their sexuality. -

Parents and Caregivers as Sexuality Educators Small Group Ministry Sessions By Robin Slaw Susan Dana Lawrence, Developmental Editor © Unitarian Universalist Association, 2019 Based on a field-tested program written by Karen Rayne and edited by Melanie Davis Introduction Welcome to a program for Unitarian Universalist parents and caregivers who seek support and skills to be effective sexuality educators of their children. This program invites adults to ask themselves: How can I embody my role as my child’s primary sexuality educator in a way that expresses my UU values and faith? Of course, children pick up information and attitudes from sources beyond the home: peers, popular culture, social media, other adults. Many Unitarian Universalist children will participate in Our Whole Lives (OWL), the lifespan, holistic, values-based sexuality education program provided by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ, and they may also receive sexuality education in school. However, OWL encourages, and this program aims to nurture, parents and caregivers in their role as their children’s primary sexuality educators. Trusted adults carry extraordinary power to influence their children’s attitudes and values around sexuality. Many adults struggle to wield that power with intentionality, grace, and confidence. These sessions invite parents and caregivers to find support, insight, and courage with one another. While the small group ministry format provides a spiritually grounded space, the program’s approach to sexuality is secular and grounded in science, in tune with the OWL lifespan sexuality education programs on which it is based. A facilitator can bring this program to a secular setting by omitting references to Unitarian Universalist Principles and values. -

Through readings, lectures, discussions, podcasts, and film, students explore theories and research on sex and gender differences, gender inequality, and sexuality across societies. Using a sociological lens, students examine how gender and gender inequality shape, and are shaped by, a variety of institutions, such as families, schools, religion and the workplace. The course also addresses how gender is implicated in cultural definitions of work, violence, intimacy, sexuality, physical attractiveness, and other social phenomena. In this course, we will use peer-reviewed social science literature, population-level survey data, and popular media to critically analyze the concepts of sex, gender, and sexuality. This class will introduce students to the sociology of gender and sexuality broadly, as we explore various topics throughout the semester. Lectures will provide brief historical and contemporary context, as well as a data snapshot to ground discussions in quantitative evidence. Assigned readings and films focus largely on how gender and sexuality are experienced in the United States, and as often as possible, center the voices of women, queer, transgender, non-binary, and intersex folks, people of color, indigenous peoples, and other oppressed groups. -

The rubric is based upon the critiques of transgender studies scholars and transgender activists on transgender representation in media. The rubric aims to address the most salient issues found in contemporary transgender representation and guide its user toward identifying more inclusive forms of transgender visibility that resist stereotypes.
