  • Spring 2010 the Bell
SPRING 2010 THE BELL Eric Harding Thiman was born at Ashford, Kent on 12th September 1900, the son of a Congregational minister. He was educated at Caterham School, and after early lessons in the piano, organ and violin, and some coaching for degree work from Harold Darke, he attained the Mus. D. at London when only twenty- seven. He became organist at Park Chapel, Crouch End, North London in 1927, and in 1957 moved to the City Temple (often referred to as the Cathedral of the Free Churches), where he remained until his death on 13th February 1975. From 1931, he was Professor of Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, and from 1956 for several years, Dean of the Faculty of Music at London University. He became well known as an adjudicator at musical festivals and as an examiner for the Royal College of Organists, the Royal Military School of Music and the Royal Schools of Music. A tireless conductor of choral societies, he worked latterly with the Elysian Choir. Thiman was a prolific composer of anthems, services, part-songs, church and secular cantatas and pieces for the piano, organ, strings and orchestra. He was Musical Editor of the hymn book Congregational Praise and the author of a number of text books. Appearing in a golden age of English music, in which songwriters like Quilter, Ireland, Bax, Warlock, C. W. Orr, Moeran and Finzi flourished, Thiman’s songs were easily overlooked. This selection shows that their neglect is unjustified; some deserve to survive in the permanent repertory of English song.

As demonstrated by the flurry of articles in specialized columns and websites like “Playbill” (“Original Rent Cast”) and “Entertainment Weekly” (Derschowitz), blogs such as “Broadway Musical Blog” (Rigsbee), and tweets (“#BroadwayCon”), the convention had a meaningful significance for fans of the musical Rent, which celebrated 20 years from its opening off-Broadway during that weekend. More somberly, the festivities were also a chance to remember its creator, Jonathan Larson, who died the night before the first off-Broadway preview. However, the film adaptation of Rent (Chris Columbus, 2005) has not enjoyed the same enduring popularity of the stage musical.

  • Introduction the Warrior Worship Idea Is Simply That a Surrendered Warrior Is a Victorious Warrior
Introduction The Warrior Worship idea is simply that a surrendered warrior is a victorious warrior. A surrendered warrior life is a powerful and power-filled life. Fully giving our lives over to our amazing King Jesus is the kind of obedience He requires of His followers. It’s what Jesus means when He says “If you love Me, you’ll obey My commands” (John 14:15, GNT). That kind of commitment begins with believing “all Scripture is breathed out by God and is useful to teach us what is true” (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV). What amazing payoffs in this life and the next for those that serve Jesus above anything else! His promise is “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has imagined the things God has prepared for those that love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9, NLT). There is simply no way to live as a warrior for Jesus Christ without reading, memorizing, digesting and living the truths of God’s Word. “The Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword able to expose our innermost thoughts and desires” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV). That’s why we’re so excited to offer this devotional to go along with the Warrior Worship original worship music project “Stronger” (in partnership with Warrior Leadership Summit 2021). God’s warriors - you! - have so much potential! “You are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works He prepared in advance for you to do” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). Loving and living the Bible unlocks the amazing potential and future God has for you! The guy who wrote these Bible studies, Jesse Colucci, in addition to writing a lot of Warrior Worship music, is one of those warriors who loves and lives God’s Word.

Editor’s Note Dear Artists and Authors, Works of literature, whether whimsical or profound, arise from inspiration, consideration, observation and craft. At times the words flow effortlessly from the pen; occasionally the grip becomes worn and the ink nearly dries before producing works of merit. We call this creative writing. It is a highly coveted skill that makes this journal possible. Clearly, as one can see from perusing page-to-page, the end justifies the means. However, it has occurred to me in a powerful epiphany as I began reading and editing that the true art does not come to completion with publication or press release. No, the true art comes to fruition perennially via you, the reader. We call the process creative writing but the purpose is realized through a creative understanding, a creative interpretation formed from experience and phenomenology. In many ways, much like a piece of paper is a canvas for the writer, the literature itself is a canvas for the readers, on which they plant their own perception and unearth a work of art no other reader can harvest. On each page, a multiplicity of stories thrive, far more than the pages of this journal are capable of containing. Your distinct reading will find something different, an exclusive reflection of yourself both fertilized by and budding from the words in a circular and mutual appreciation. This is the very essence of creative understanding. Now turn the page and begin— reap what you will, experience each story in every way you know how and sow a parcel of yourself in our journal.
