SCIENTIA MARINA 71(4) December 2007, 629-635, Barcelona (Spain) ISSN: 0214-8358 In vivo measurements of the seasonal photosynthetic fluorescence of the Mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitosa (L.) ANDREA PEIRANO ENEA - Marine Environment Research Center, C.P. 224, I-19100 La Spezia, Italy. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: In situ photosynthetic fluorescence of the zooxanthellate Mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitosa (L.) was measured seasonally on colonies from 5 to 27 m depth using an INF-300 Integrating Natural Fluorometer (Biospherical Instrument Inc.). This oceanographic instrument, used to measure the in vivo phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluores- cence, was adapted to record the natural fluorescence of C. caespitosa by SCUBA divers. The resulting curves of natural flu- orescence of Chl a vs photosynthetically active radiation (PAR 400-700 nm) showed that: (1) natural fluorescence was limit- ed by light availability in both deep and shallow colonies in all seasons; (2) photosynthesis occurred in C. caespitosa also in winter, when temperature is low and seawater turbidity contributes significantly to PAR attenuation; and (3) the efficiency of the Chl a fluorescence increased from summer to winter. This last finding outlines the winter coupling between zooxanthellae activity and calcification processes and is consistent with the formation of the high density band in the coral skeleton. Keywords: coral, Mediterranean Sea, in vivo fluorescence, photosynthesis. Jurassic-Berrasian ment of oceanic lithosphere (i.e. ophiolites) onto continental age. Similar calpionellid limestones elsewhere (N Albania; crust and post-emplacement settings. An example chosen N Greece) post-date the regional ophiolite emplacement. At here is the well-exposed Jurassic Mirdita ophiolite in one locality in S Albania (Voskopoja), calpionellid lime- southern Albania. Successions studied in five different stones are gradationally underlain by thick ophiolite-derived ophiolitic massifs (Voskopoja, Luniku, Shpati, Rehove and breccias (containing both ultramafic and mafic clasts) that Morava) document variable depositional processes and were derived by mass wasting of subaqueous fault scarps palaeoenvironments in the light of evidence from compara- during or soon after the latest stages of ophiolite emplace- ble settings elsewhere (e.g. N Albania; N Greece). ABSTRACT - In the Werlberg Member (Rupelian pro parte) of the Paisslberg Formation (Eastern Alps), an assemblage of colonial corals of eleven species pertaining to eleven genera and eleven families was identified:Stylocoenia carryensis, Acropora lavandulina, ?Colpophyllia sp., Dendrogyra intermedia, Caulastraea pseudoflabellum, Hydnophyllia costata, Pindosmilia cf. brunni, Actinacis rollei, Pavona profunda, Agathiphyllia gregaria, and Faksephyllia faxoensis. This is the first Oligocene coral assemblage reported from the Paisslberg Formation (Werlberg Member) of the Eastern Alps, consisting exclusively of colonial forms. The assemblage represents the northernmost fauna of reefal corals reported to date for Rupelian time. The Werlberg Member accumulated during marine transgression onto a truncated succession of older carbonate rocks. The corals grew as isolated colonies and in carpets in a protected shoreface setting punctuated by high-energy events. Coral growth forms comprise massive to sublamellar forms, and branched (dendroid, ramose) forms.

Albian corals from the Subpelagonian Zone of Central Greece (Agrostylia, Pamassos region). Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae, 72: 1-65. Abstract: Shallow-water scleractinian corals from Cretaceous allochthonous sediments of the Subpelagonian Zone in Agrostylia (Pamassos region, Central Greece) represent 47 taxa belonging to 35 genera, 15 families and 8 suborders; of these 3 new genera and 9 new species are described. Among these taxa, 5 were identified only at the generic level. One octocorallian species has also been identified. This coral assemblage is representative for late Early Cretaceous Tethyan realm but also shows some endemism. A characteristic feature of this scleractinian coral assemblage is the abundance of specimens from the suborder Rhipidogyrina. The Albian age of the corals discussed is indicated by the whole studied coral fauna, associated foraminifers, calpionellids and calcareous dinoflagellates. Key words: Scleractinia, Octocorallia, Pamassos, Greece, Albian, taxonomy, palaeogeography. Manuscript received 3 December 2001, accepted 8 April 2002 INTRODUCTION Several occurrences of Cretaceous scleractinian corals and Morycowa & Kołodziej (2001) on corals from the from Greece have been mentioned in the literature (see e.g., Agrostylia valley in Pamassos (Albian, corrected from Al Celet, 1962), but not many taxonomic studies have been bian- ?Cenomanian).
