29th October - 16th November 2014 photo: Alastair Muir Billy Elliot The Musical Live! The East Durham Creates Festival was launched on 28 September 2014 with two very special screenings of Billy Elliot The Musical Live in Easington Social Welfare Centre.

Coinciding with a national and international live broadcast of the West End Theatre production these were the only screenings that took place in a venue that is not a theatre or cinema. They were made possible through the generous support of Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, and tickets were subsidised through personal sponsorship from the creative team behind the film Billy Elliot.

Billy’s journey takes him into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever. East Durham Creates aims to similarly instil and celebrate creative activity across the area.

2 A very warm welcome… to the first East Durham Creates Festival, a collection of over 40 performances, exhibitions and events to experience and enjoy this Autumn. The Festival brings unique outdoor performances and film screenings, community parades, theatre and a wide range of workshops, artist talks and much more to towns and villages across the area.

There’s something to experience for all tastes and ages; from playing games in unexpected places, to guided walks with artists and experts exploring local heritage, myths and legends. You can borrow a piece of art to display in your own home or join us to commemorate significant moments in the area’s history.

We’re thrilled to be welcoming highly regarded artists and performers from the UK and beyond to the area, and premiering two special new commissions by artist Dryden Goodwin and composer Ed Carter plus performances from innovative theatre company Uninvited Guests and astonishing Brooklyn-based musicians So Percussion.

Everything on offer for you to experience is inspired by the place, people, stories and heritage of the area - created by internationally recognised artists working closely with local residents. All developed in response to ideas, themes, interests and priorities expressed during extensive and continuing consultation with local people.

We would like to thank everyone involved so far for their energy, enthusiasm, dedication and support and hope to see you at an East Durham Creates Festival event very soon.

3 Hello from the team! East Durham Creates is a programme of arts and cultural activity developed with and for the people of East Durham, which started in May 2014 and will continue until Summer 2016.

Festivals will take place in the spring and autumn of each year, involving art, performance, music, theatre and much more – all created by bringing local people and high quality artists together. We want to explore what great art means here whilst having fun and creating a bit of magic along the way.

This programme is funded by Arts Council ’s Creative People and Places scheme, which aims to get more people taking part in the arts. As well as a team based within the community (that’s us!) we are delighted to be working with Beamish, Forma, East Durham Trust and Durham County Council. All partners involved in this project hold a special connection to the area and are working together, with local residents, to bring what we hope will be a unique and exciting chapter in the story of East Durham.

Our ambition over the next two years is to act as a catalyst in creating an appetite for future activity through providing positive experiences for local residents, encourage more visitors to this beautiful part of the world, attract investment and leave behind a lasting legacy.

There are lots of ways for you to get involved, from simply coming along to experience one of our events, to volunteering, working with artists, shaping the future programme and developing a wide range of skills – you can find more information throughout the programme.

If you want to find out more or sign up to be involved please contact us at [email protected] or call 0191 518 5073.

We really can’t (and don’t want to) do this on our own so please get in touch, tell us what you think and join us – we’d love to hear from you!

With best wishes,

5 Skill -Dryden Goodwin Throghout East Durham from 29th October - 15th November Skill is a new animated film based on artistDryden Goodwin’s encounters with 12 local people. Each person has a hands-on skill, ranging from tattooing to cake-decorating to horse-handling. The film focuses on the drawings that Dryden made of each of the participants as he observed them working, with their conversations forming an atmospheric sound track.

Why this? Local communities said the art they respected most showed a clear skill. Dryden chose to shine a light on some of the people and skills that exist in East Durham.

Dryden Goodwin’s practice includes drawing, often combined with video. His work has been projected on the roof of St Thomas’s Hospital (opposite the Houses of Parliament) and exhibited across the London Underground, as well as in galleries including Tate Modern.

Play locations: FREE Apollo Pavillion, Peterlee; Byron Place, Seaham; Easington Welfare Park; Greenhills Centre, ; Horden Welfare Park; Shotton Community Centre.

See if you can find all the games, take pictures and share them with us. They are easy to understand, don’t require any equipment and can be played by anyone. Why this? Art isn’t always serious. By putting games in unexpected places, we hope you might see East Durham in a totally new way.

Holly Gramazio makes real-world games for public spaces. She has developed large projects including the New Year Games in Edinburgh in 2012, and 99 Tiny Games installed all over London for the Cultural Olympiad. 8 Art Lending Library - Zoe Walker & Neil Bromwich Exhibition: FREE 29 October to 1 November Peterlee Methodist Church 12pm – 8pm 7 November to 10 November Thornley Community Centre 12pm – 8pm 13 November to 16 November Robin Todd Centre, 12pm – 8pm Imagine going into a gallery, falling in love with a piece of art...and being able to take it home. With the Art Lending Library, a piece of art is yours to exhibit and enjoy for three days. We will install it, take it down and take care of things like insurance - and ensure there are no holes are left in your walls! Choose a piece for your school, community centre, workplace or shop – it’s up to you! Why this? Art doesn’t have to belong in an art gallery. Art Lending Library contains over 50 works that can be borrowed, handled, performed and maybe even worn! Each Art Lending Library begins with an outdoor parade - visit our website for more information. Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich create objects and situations that invite people to consider other ways of thinking or being. They have exhibited and presented performances internationally and at many UK galleries. A project by Market Gallery and Walker & Bromwich 9 Fl10S: False Lights Seaham - Ed Carter Exhibition: FREE 1 to 13 November St John’s Church, Seaham 10am – 2pm & 3.30pm – 6pm (*1pm – 5pm on Sundays)

Inspired by the region’s maritime heritage, and responding specifically to the 1962 George Elmy lifeboat disaster, Fl10s: False Lights, Seaham combines sculpture, light, and sound.

The specially-commissioned work incorporates 10 large-scale orchestral bell plates, a set of tuned steel plates played using electromagnetic fields. The resulting sounds are haunting, otherworldly and unique.

The large, oak-framed instrument emits dense tones as the bell plates resonate, and the skeletal, timber form creates a sense of motion as lights arc around the structure.

10 Music Performance: £10 (£3 East Durham residents) Saturday 15 November Seaham Marina 4.30pm

To commemorate the anniversary of the George Elmy disaster, please join us for the live premiere of Ed Carter’s new composition for Fl10S:False Lights Seaham, performed with professional percussionists and local brass band musicians.

Hot food and drink will be available. In the event of bad weather, an alternative venue will be used – please check our website for details.

Why this? Ed’s earlier work The False Lights of Durham was inspired by the county’s coastline, marked by ten lighthouses. This work focuses on Seaham lighthouse, and the events it has ‘witnessed’ since its construction in 1905.

Ed Carter creates physical projects and new musical compositions. 40,000 people visited his 2012 project ~Flow (a collaboration with Owl Project) - a floating mill house moored on the River Tyne, containing wooden musical machines powered by a waterwheel which responded to the river’s tides.

11 Love Letters Straight from your Heart - Uninvited Guests Theatre Performance: £10 (£3 East Durham residents) Thurs 6 November Blackhall Community Centre 7.30pm Fri 7 November Easington Social Welfare Centre 7.30pm Sat 8 November Castle Eden Village Hall 7.30pm Sun 9 November Macrae House, Murton 7.30pm

A cross between a wedding reception and a radio request programme, each performance is based on the audience’s favourite songs and stories about the people they love (and perhaps lost). Audience members are invited to send a song request or memory before the performance you are attending, so no two evenings are the same!

Why this? This show is about love in all its forms and is happening in venues across East Durham where important family celebrations take place.

Uninvited Guests is a theatre company whose work blurs the line between theatre and social festivities. Audiences join in events that are celebratory, nostalgic and critical. 12 The Pan Hag Walks - Gayle Chong Kwan Walk, Talk and Eat: FREE Saturday 1 & 8 November Secret location 11.30am

Pan Haggerty? Panacalty? Panakerty? How do YOU say it? One thing’s for sure – we all love to eat! Booking is advised as places are limited, visit www.eastdurhamcreates.co.uk or call 0191 518 5073. All will be revealed upon booking - sensible shoes are recommended!

Why this? There are strong cooking and food-growing traditions locally. Gayle is the perfect artist to bring them together and create some magic!

Gayle Chong Kwan is known for creating fantastic scenes and landscapes that are often sited in the public realm. Gayle has been working with East Durham Creates since May and is spending twelve months here as our first artist in residence. 13 SO Percussion Music performance: £10 (£3 East Durham residents) Saturday 1 November The Glebe Centre, Murton 7.30pm

Come and celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Northern League, the second oldest football league in the world, which had teams and players who proudly belonged to their communities. More than a story of football, this is a story of knowing who you are, and its importance in a changing world. 19 The story so far...... We’ve been working across East Durham for quite some time now and have already completed a few great projects that deserve a special mention! Exchanges Exchanges gave more than 300 local people of all ages the chance to get creative with local artists Nicola Balfour, Jane Shaw, Paul Merrick and David Gross. The work they made featured as part of our launch exhibition in May at The Art Block Seaham, an arts space run by East Durham Artists Network. But the conversations that happened were just as important, and many of the things that participants said helped to shape the festival programme. Exchanges was funded by East Durham Area Action Partnership. Cinema Sports: Ready...Steady...Film!
