29th October - 16th November 2014 photo: Alastair Muir Billy Elliot The Musical Live! The East Durham Creates Festival was launched on 28 September 2014 with two very special screenings of Billy Elliot The Musical Live in Easington Social Welfare Centre. Coinciding with a national and international live broadcast of the West End Theatre production these were the only screenings that took place in a venue that is not a theatre or cinema. They were made possible through the generous support of Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, and tickets were subsidised through personal sponsorship from the creative team behind the film Billy Elliot. Billy’s journey takes him into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever. East Durham Creates aims to similarly instil and celebrate creative activity across the area. 2 A very warm welcome… to the first East Durham Creates Festival, a collection of over 40 performances, exhibitions and events to experience and enjoy this Autumn. The Festival brings unique outdoor performances and film screenings, community parades, theatre and a wide range of workshops, artist talks and much more to towns and villages across the area. There’s something to experience for all tastes and ages; from playing games in unexpected places, to guided walks with artists and experts exploring local heritage, myths and legends. You can borrow a piece of art to display in your own home or join us to commemorate significant moments in the area’s history. We’re thrilled to be welcoming highly regarded artists and performers from the UK and beyond to the area, and premiering two special new commissions by artist Dryden Goodwin and composer Ed Carter plus performances from innovative theatre company Uninvited Guests and astonishing Brooklyn-based musicians So Percussion. Everything on offer for you to experience is inspired by the place, people, stories and heritage of the area - created by internationally recognised artists working closely with local residents. All developed in response to ideas, themes, interests and priorities expressed during extensive and continuing consultation with local people. We would like to thank everyone involved so far for their energy, enthusiasm, dedication and support and hope to see you at an East Durham Creates Festival event very soon. East Durham Creates is a programme of arts and cultural activity developed with and for the people of East Durham, which started in May 2014 and will continue until Summer 2016. Festivals will take place in the spring and autumn of each year, involving art, performance, music, theatre and much more – all created by bringing local people and high quality artists together. We want to explore what great art means here whilst having fun and creating a bit of magic along the way. This programme is funded by Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places scheme, which aims to get more people taking part in the arts. As well as a team based within the community (that’s us!) we are delighted to be working with Beamish, Forma, East Durham Trust and Durham County Council. All partners involved in this project hold a special connection to the area and are working together, with local residents, to bring what we hope will be a unique and exciting chapter in the story of East Durham. Our ambition over the next two years is to act as a catalyst in creating an appetite for future activity through providing positive experiences for local residents, encourage more visitors to this beautiful part of the world, attract investment and leave behind a lasting legacy. There are lots of ways for you to get involved, from simply coming along to experience one of our events, to volunteering, working with artists, shaping the future programme and developing a wide range of skills – you can find more information throughout the programme. If you want to find out more or sign up to be involved please contact us at [email protected] or call 0191 518 5073. We really can’t (and don’t want to) do this on our own so please get in touch, tell us what you think and join us – we’d love to hear from you! Each person has a hands-on skill, ranging from tattooing to cake-decorating to horse-handling. The film focuses on the drawings that Dryden made of each of the participants as he observed them working, with their conversations forming an atmospheric sound track. Why this? Local communities said the art they respected most showed a clear skill. Dryden chose to shine a light on some of the people and skills that exist in East Durham. Dryden Goodwin’s practice includes drawing, often combined with video. His work has been projected on the roof of St Thomas’s Hospital (opposite the Houses of Parliament) and exhibited across the London Underground, as well as in galleries including Tate Modern. 6 Outdoor Screenings: FREE 29 Oct to 10 Nov Castle Dene Shopping Centre, Peterlee 4.30pm -7pm 6 to 15 Nov Byron Place Shopping Centre, Seaham 4.30pm – 9.30pm Cinema-style Screenings: FREE Weds 29 October The Pavillion, Peterlee 7.30pm Throghout East Durham from 29th October - 15th November Fri 31st October Seaham Town Hall 8pm Mon 3rd November Horden Welfare Hall 7.30pm Thurs 6th November Castle Eden Village Hall 7.30pm Thurs 6th November Hazelwell Centre 7.30pm Sun 9th November Easington Social Welfare Centre 7.30pm Mon 10th November Trimdon Station Community Centre 5.15pm Weds 12th November Seaham Marina 4pm Thurs 13th November Wingate Community Centre 7:30pm Fri 14th November Blackhall Community Centre 7.30pm Tickets are FREE for these screenings and many will be accompanied by a talk, workshop or demonstration, inspired by Skill.
