The number of new members added during the last year has been 106 making the total number 682. This is considerably in excess of the addition made in any former year, and more than twice that which took place on the occasion of the admission of Mechanical Engineers to the privilege of membership, and may be considered a flattering proof that the efforts of the Institute to advance the sciences of Mining and Mechanical Engineering and improve the general standard of the scientific education of the district are appreciated. The persistent exertions made by the Institute from its very commencement to effect the establishment of a College of Science in Newcastle are too well known to the members to be alluded to at any length here. The Council trust that the recent success of these efforts has attracted the attention of the scientific portion of the inhabitants of the district, and it is with extreme satisfaction they remark that the extraordinary increase in the number of new members has taken place during the year that the College of Physical Science has been established, and they confidently anticipate that these kindred establishments, having one common aim, may mutually strengthen and assist each other. The Wood Memorial Hall is now open, and forms a valuable addition to the Institute for increasing its sphere of usefulness. It is a very handsome building, suited to the requirements of the members, and the Council think it a matter of congratulation that the testimonial to the memory of Mr. Nicholas Wood, first President of the Institute, should have taken this form. It is with deep regret the Council have to record the death of Mr. John Middleton, of Benton. This gentleman was one of the earliest members of the Institute, having been elected in 1853, and his loss will be keenly felt by all who knew him. Mr. J. Hosking, a member of Council, and for upwards of twenty years associated with the firm of Messrs. Hawks, Crawshay and Co., [vi] has also died. This gentleman was connected with the works of the High Level Bridge, under the late Mr. Robert Stephenson, and invented a valuable form of valve for pumps. He was a man of varied information, and held in very high esteem as a Mechanical Engineer. The members of the Institute have had the satisfaction of entertaining in Newcastle the members of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, and the South Lancashire and Cheshire Coal Association. The number of gentlemen who responded to the invitation, and the expressions of satisfaction the Council continue to receive from those who attended, leave no doubt that the meetings of the 2nd, 3rd,and 4th July, 1872, in Newcastle, were a success. The best thanks of the Institute are due to the Committee who made the arrangements, and to the various gentlemen who so liberally contributed to the expenses. The Council also draw the attention of the members to the very great courtesy shown by the Mayor and Corporation of Newcastle, the Authorities of the University of Durham, the Professors of the College of Physical Science in Newcastle, the Literary and Philosophical and the Natural History Societies, the River Tyne Commissioners, and the various Coal Owners and Manufacturers in the neighbourhood, and have much pleasure in recording the thanks of the Institute to all who, by their attention, contributed so greatly to the success of the meetings. The Council think they ought not to close this Report without alluding to the valuable services rendered to the Institute and the cause of education in the district by Mr. E. F. Boyd, whose term of office, as President, now expires. For many years he held the office of Treasurer, and to his care and attention may be traced the happy financial position the Institute now enjoys. It has been a most fortunate circumstance that this gentleman, who ever had at heart the work to which the Institute had devoted itself, should have ruled its councils at a time when liberal and active gentlemen were leading opinion in the University of Durham. Mr. Boyd will retire from the Presidency with the best wishes of the members, who will recollect, with pride and satisfaction, the work he has enabled them to do, and with an earnest desire on their part that he may be spared for many years to continue his exertions in the good work now commenced. Your Committee have pleasure in reporting that the income of the Institute for the year just past shows an increase as compared with that of the previous year of £167 18s. 10d.; the receipts for 1870-71, being £1437 11s. 8d., and for the year now past, £1605 10s. 6d. The expenditure has been £570 8s. 7d. above the income for the year. This includes an outlay of about £1,200 for the completion of the Wood Memorial Hall, the rooms under which are now let, and produce a rental of £50 per annum. We are now seeking to appoint a new Vicar to serve both parishes, the two benefices being held in plurality. Whilst each parish has its own individual characteristics, the congregations have much in common. Both have a commitment to the growth of the Church, their own growth as disciples and to service in their community. This commitment is demonstrated as a significant number of members of the combined congregations carry out some kind of voluntary work within their church, participate through the PCC committees and maintain their commitment to planned giving and stewardship. The parishes support a small number of part-time employees whose work underpins our mission to our local communities.

Much inclosure of Common Land, Open Fields and Moor Land (or Waste), formerly farmed collectively by the residents on behalf of the Lord of the Manor, had taken place by the 18th century, but the uplands of County Durham remained largely unenclosed. Inclosures, to consolidate land-holdings, divide the land (into Allotments) and fence it off from other usage, could be made under a Private Act of Parliament or by general agreement of the landowners concerned. In the latter case the Agreement would be Enrolled as a Decree at the Court of Chancery in Durham and/or lodged with the Clerk of the Peace, the senior government officer in the County, so may be preserved in Quarter Sessions records. In the case of Parliamentary Enclosure a Local Bill would be put before Parliament which would pass it into law as an Inclosure Act. The Acts appointed Commissioners to survey the area concerned and determine its distribution as a published Inclosure Award.

In order to find the location of a grave you will first need to find which cemetery or churchyard a person is buried in, perhaps by looking in burial registers, and then look for the grave location using grave registers and grave plans. To complement our lists of churchyard burial records (see below) we have published a book, Cemeteries in County Durham, which lists civil cemeteries in County Durham and shows where records for these are available. Appendices to this book list non-conformist cemeteries and churchyard extensions. Please contact us to buy a copy. Parish burial registers Church of England burial registers generally give a date of burial, the name of the person and sometimes an address and age (for more details please see information about Parish Registers in the Family History section of our website). These registers are available to be viewed in the Record Office on microfilm. Burial register entries occasionally give references to burial grounds or grave plot locations in a marginal note. For details on coverage of parish registers please see our Parish Register Database and our Parish Registers Handlist (in the Information Leaflets section). While most burial registers are for Church of England graveyards there are some non-conformist burial grounds which have registers too (please see appendix 3 of our Cemeteries book, and our Non-conformist Register Handlist).

    ' The Police Committee Special Sub-Committee at their meeting on 24 January 19.85 approved this report and recommended that it should be presented to the Police Committee for their approval. In doing so, they wish to place on record their appreciation and gratitude to all the members of the County Council's Department of Administration who have assisted and advised the Sub-Committee in their inquiry or who have been involved in the preparation of this report, in particular Anne Conaty (Assistant Solicitor), Len Cooksey (Committee Administrator), Elizabeth Griffiths (Secretary to the Deputy County Clerk) and David Hainsworth (Deputy County Clerk). (Councillor Dawson reserved his position on the report and the Sub-Committee agreed to consider a minority report from him). ----------------------- ~~- -1- • Frontispiece "There were many lessons to be learned from the steel strike and from the Police point of view the most valuable lesson was that to be derived from maintaining traditional Police methods of being firm but fair and resorting to minimum force by way of bodily contact and avoiding the use of weapons. My feelings on Police strategy in industrial disputes and also those of one of my predecessors, Sir Philip Knights, are encapsulated in our replies to questions asked of us when we appeared before the House of Commons Select Committee on Employment on Wednesday 27 February 1980. I said 'I would hope that despite all the problems that we have you will still allow us to have our discretion and you will not move towards the Army, CRS-type policing, or anything like that.
