Bodegas Coviñas
Bodegas Coviñas Country Spain Region Valencia Appellation(s) Utiel Requena Producer Diego Morcillo Year Founded 1965 Farming Sustainable Harvest Method Manual and mechanical Social Media Instagram: @bodegas_covinas While nearly forgotten now, Utiel Requena was crowned one of Spain’s first DOs in the 1930’s. Approximately 45 miles off the SE coast of the Mediterranean, within the Comunitat Valenciana, here the arid, harsh climate from the northwest welcomes the strong Mediterranean influence of warming wind. The high altitude sites in Requena (1000m) are dotted with poor, organic soils of river rock, clay and limestone, making it the perfect setting for pesticide free farming practices. Utiel Requena is also the home of one of Spain’s most widely planted, and often overlooked red varietals, Bobal. Given the high elevation and acid retaining soils, Utiel Requena is also one of the seven regions permitted to produce sparkling wines brandished with DO Cava. Bodegas Coviñas, founded in 1965, is a union of the area’s most prominent landholders. It was founded in efforts to create a distillery to utilize the abundance of must from their individual wineries. During the dismal times under the dictator, General Francisco Franco, the lion’s share of vineyard production came from unionized cooperatives that employed thousands of landowners. Bodegas Coviñas has always strived to take care of the people of Utiel Requena, paying top dollar for the highest quality fruit - becoming the foundation on which the region survives. Diego Morcillo has been the winemaker at Grupo Coviñas for 15 years. Prior to that, he spent 5 years of work study at Bodegas Faustino in DOCa Rioja. -

TRIENNIA by Bodegas Portia Triennia Is a Rare and Iconic Wine from the Portia Estate in Spain’S Exciting Ribera Del Duero Region
TRIENNIA by Bodegas Portia Triennia is a rare and iconic wine from the Portia estate in Spain’s exciting Ribera del Duero region. It is the outcome of a venture that began in the 1990s, when the Martinez family (owners of Bodegas Faustino, a leading producer of wines from Rioja), purchased nearly 400 acres of terrain, enjoying an eastern and southern orientation, in Ribero del Duero. Vineyards were planted chiefly with Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta Fina del País). The name Portia has a dual origin, both as a reference to the seventh satellite of the planet Uranus (representing the pioneer, inventor, creator and artist according to astrology), and the Latin word for a token offering made in ancient times as a symbol of gratitude toward the elements in return for a healthy and abundant harvest. Portia’s spectacular state-of-the-art winemaking facility is impressive. Commissioned by the Martinez family, the project represents the first-ever winemaking bodega designed by internationally famed architect Norman Foster, head of the award-winning London-based design team, Foster + Partners. PRODUCTION AREA Country: Spain Region: Ribera del Duero The grapes grow at an altitude of 2,559 feet above sea level on sandy clay soils. Vineyards are planted at an average density of 4,000 vines per acre. The beautiful label design of Triennia is an aerial view of the spectacular winery which was designed by famed architect Norman Foster. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Tinta Fina del País (Tempranillo) PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 82ºF. -
2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyards, Napa Valley
TECH SHEET 2012 RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON ESTATE VINEYARDS, NAPA VALLEY VARIETAL %’S: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon WINE CHEMISTRY: pH 3.68 TA 5.9 g/L Alc 14.5% HARVEST NOTES: The 2012 growing season was a welcome respite from the challenges nature posed in 2010 and 2011. The season began early with the vines setting a bountiful crop. Our grapes thrived in excellent growing conditions and developed complex flavors supported by a refined phenolic profile. VINEYARDS: Estate - located at the winery, faces west from the side of Howell Mountain and has a slope averaging 22%. The soil is composed of “Tuff” a volcanic ash, allowing the vineyard to drain very well. Inkgrade - An eastern-facing mountain vineyard, located in a frost free zone between the valley floor and mountain top with ancient marine sedimentary soils. WINE DESCRIPTION: Through our barrel program we identify a select few barrels that exhibit extreme complexity and richness. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in a high percentage of new oak that imparts balance and allows the wines to achieve full rounded character coupled with boldness. At this point the wine achieved the standard to be labeled under our Reserve program that showcases the full potential of our vineyards. CASES PRODUCED RELEASE DATE SUGGESTED RETAIL 197 SEPTEMBER 2015 $120.00 Burgess Cellars has been devoted to creating world-class mountain styled wines from the Napa Valley since 1972. Located on the famous Howell mountain, Burgess has been focused on growing estate fruit, producing refined, balanced wines that highlight expressive aromas complimented by rich flavors. Hyde Park Wine Experiences and Culinary Adventures
Hyde Park Wine Experiences and Culinary Adventures In this issue, I will make some suggestions on Meritage and Red Blends for your wine cellar. Now is the time to stock up on Cabernet. I have put a very nice list together with various price points. Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon was a hot item at our Cellar Wine Tasting in January. Now the most recent release is appearing at your local wine merchant. Don’t blink, because this vintage will not be around long. I will catch up on mail questions from Members and suggest some fun wines with good value pricing. There is much confusion surrounding Pinotage. This old wine, produced in South Africa is starting to show up at local wine stores. I have a few inexpensive recommendations to share with you. FRANK FAMILY VINEYARDS: One of the hottest vineyards in California Napa Valley is the boutique wines of Frank Family Vineyards. Owners Richard Frank and Koerner Rombauer focus their energies on superb still wines. The winery produces Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and several distinctly different Cabernet Sauvignons. The highly regarded Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, barrel-aged for two and one-half years, is now emerging as one of the most sought-after wines in the valley. Frank Family Vineyards is known for their red wines. However, their Chardonnay is very complex, buttery, and spends fourteen months in French oak barrels. Their Chardonnay is very similar to Rombauer or a Cakebread Chardonnay in style and grace…big, long and showing gleaming ripe apple, pear, and peach flavors. Frank Family Vineyard, Rutherford Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Retails for $39.99 Frank Family Vineyard, Rutherford Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Retails for $64.99 Frank Family Vineyard, Rutherford Napa Valley Chardonnay 2002 Retails for $28.99 Frank Family Vineyard, Rutherford Napa Valley Sangiovese 2001 Retails for $37.99 ANOTHER UNIQUE WINERY: I was recently at a tasting at the Cincinnatian Hotel and tasted some unique wines from the Beringer portfolio. -
