NUTS NOTES Vol.18 No.4 October I960 The response to the last issue was most encouraging both from the interest shown by athletics enthusiasts in this country and abroad and in the number of contributions submitted for this issue or promised for future issues. However the overall number of contributors is still comparatively small and I hope that others will be encouraged to submit contributions in future. Considerable interest has been shown in the UK All Time Lists previously published; a list of compilations appearing in previous editions of NUTS Notes is as follows Vol 7 No.3 Pentathlon (m ) Vol 9 No.3 Pentathlon (F) 100mH 1971 Tables Vol 10 No.2 4 x 100mR (F) Vol 10 No.3 Decathlon Vol 10 No.4 HJ (M) Vol 11 N o .1 Pentathlon (f ) 100mH 1971 Tables Vol 11 No.2 3000mW & 5000mW (F ) 4 x 400mR (F) Vol12 No.1 400m (M ) Vol 12 No.3 800m (m ) Vol 12 No.4 1500m (M), 1000m(M ) , 1000y (M), 2000m (M) Vol 13 No.3 1M (M ) Vol 14 No.1 3M/ 5000m (M) Vol 15 Nos 3/4 6m /10000m (M ) Vol 18 No.3 SP, DT, HT, JT (M ) Some, of course, were combined performers/performances. However, this will now appear in the next issue and another form is enclosed for those members who have not yet replied.

Open Spectrum UK: Comments for Analysys regarding Ofcom’s Digital Dividend Review Table of Contents 2 SUMMARY 4 Expanding broadband access to the Internet is the best use of the Digital Dividend 6 Rural broadband produces significant economic and social benefits 10 Wireless “hot zones” are appearing in cities across the UK, using sub-optimal configurations due to regulatory restrictions that can and should be lifted 11 There are limits to what DSL alone can offer 17 Wireless broadband is the most cost-effective Internet access solution for low-density settlements 19 Ofcom already recognises that the limited coverage attainable with licence exempt equipment in rural areas is due to inappropriate regulation 20 WLANs operating in the UHF band cost less to build and operate than comparable networks using higher frequencies 21 The United States may soon authorise licence exempt WLAN use of frequencies in the terrestrial television band, creating a potentially large market with standards that could reduce costs and resolve design issues for similar equipment in the UK 23 A minimum of spectrum should be allocated to DTV as it may soon be overtaken by other video delivery methods 27 Ofcom should not allocate additional spectrum to TV broadcasters for them to develop interactive services 27 Replacing equipment twice – which is necessary to introduce HDTV soon after DTV – imposes too much cost for too little benefit 28 Mobile TV should develop in a higher band 29 The international framework for radio regulation is flexible enough for Ofcom to allocate part of the television broadcasting band to other services regardless of RRC-06’s outcome 31 APPENDIX A: Organisational members of Open Spectrum UK Open Spectrum UK – Digital Dividend Review (comments) 2 Open Spectrum UK: Comments for Analysys regarding Ofcom’s Digital Dividend Review Open Spectrum UK (OSUK) is a coalition of non-profit organisations formed in January 2005 to work for the expansion of licence exempt use of the public airwaves.

  • NUTS Notes Vol.19 No.2
NUTS NOTES Vol.19 No.2 May 1981 The major event in the U.K. since the last issue has been, in most people's eyes, the London Marathon. Peter Matthews writes: There was a good contingent of NUTS taking part in the London Marathon. Those I've found in the results: 166th Steve Mitchell 2:31:25 777*h Bob Phillips 2:50:08 308th John Walsh 2:37:10 3017th Chris Thorne 3:30:04 318th Hedydd Davies 2:37:24 3841 st Peter Matthews 3:42:31 375th Dave Bendy 2:39:10 4865th Colin Young 3:59:44(walking) 491 st Leo Coy 2:43:06 5998th Mel Watman 4:31:56 If there were any other NUTS competitors, please let the editor know. A tremendous experience - I am sure all who saw or ran in the race will agree. First marathons for Leo Coy and Peter Matthews (I'd never run any competition in excess of 5 miles - twice the London Breweries Cross-Country a decade ago!). Congratulations to Dr. Carol Endersby who married Dr. David Cowan on Friday 1st May .......... Richard Hymans and Ian Hodge recently had their compilation "Best Non-Winning Performances by Place" published in Track Newsletter.......... Brian Rowan has produced 'A Statistical History of N.I. Track and Field Athletics', available from him at 29 Wood End, Holywood, Co. Down, N.Ireland, at 50p plus postage. He points out that this is very much a pioneering venture, but it will he hopes be a step in the right direction towards bringing Ulster statistics into line with the rest of the U.K.
