LITERARY BITS Module 2 WORKING IN DIGITAL ROBERT HARRIS • ENIGMA ABOUT THE AUTHOR ROBERT HARRIS Robert Harris was born in Nottingham, UK, in 1957. After graduating at Cambridge, he worked as a journalist for the BBC and assisted on shows that covered important current events. He became a political commentator, was the editor of The Observer, a UK political paper, and wrote articles on politics in many other newspapers. He started his writing career in the 1980s and since then he has written a number of fictional thrillers, often related to political events, and eight novels have become bestsellers. He wrote novels related to World War Two such as ‘Fatherland’ (1992), his first bestseller, and ‘Enigma’ (1995), but also stories set in other historical periods like ‘Pompeii’ (2003). R. Harris ABOUT THE NOVEL ENIGMA The novel is a blend between a historical novel and a mystery novel which mixes up reality and fiction. The story is set in 1943 when much of Nazi Enigma Code has already been cracked. However, Shark, the impenetrable cipher used to hide the movements of the U-boats, the German submarines, to the Allies, is still a mystery. A top secret team of British cryptographers led by the brilliant mathematician Tom Jericho has the task of deciphering it. They succeed in breaking the code, but unfortunately the Germans change it. As an Allied convoy crosses the North Atlantic Ocean full of U-boats, Jericho has to solve three mysteries with the help of his girlfriend’s roommate who is on the convoy: the code, whether his girlfriend Claire is a spy and if she has been murdered. -

The Legacy of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages in the West The Roman Empire reigned from 27 BCE to 476 CE throughout the Mediterranean world, including parts of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The fall of the Roman Empire in the West in 476 CE marked the end of the period of classical antiquity and ushered in a new era in world history. Three civilizations emerged as successors to the Romans in the Mediterranean world: the Byzantine Empire (in many ways a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire), and the civilizations of Islam and Western Europe. These three civilizations would become rivals and adversaries over the course of the succeeding centuries. They developed distinct religious, cultural, social, political, and linguistic characteristics that shaped the path each civilization would take throughout the course of the Middle Ages and beyond. The Middle Ages in European history refers to the period spanning the fifth through the fifteenth century. The fall of the Western Roman Empire typically represents the beginning of the Middle Ages. Scholars divide the Middle Ages into three eras: the Early Middle Ages (400–1000), the High Middle Ages (1000–1300), and the Late Middle Ages (1300–1500). The Renaissance and the Age of Discovery traditionally mark the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period in European history. The legacy of the Roman Empire, and the division of its territory into three separate civilizations, impacted the course of world history and continues to influence the development of each region to this day. -

Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed to the owner of the Intellectual Property Rights. 2 Abstract The Latin principality of Antioch was founded during the First Crusade (1095-1099), and survived for 170 years until its destruction by the Mamluks in 1268. This thesis offers the first full assessment of the thirteenth century principality of Antioch since the publication of Claude Cahen’s La Syrie du nord à l’époque des croisades et la principauté franque d’Antioche in 1940. It examines the Latin principality from its devastation by Saladin in 1188 until the fall of Antioch eighty years later, with a particular focus on its relationship with the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia. This thesis shows how the fate of the two states was closely intertwined for much of this period. The failure of the principality to recover from the major territorial losses it suffered in 1188 can be partly explained by the threat posed by the Cilician Armenians in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. -
The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome
CHARM 2015 Proceedings Marketing an Urban Identity: The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome 135 Rhodora G. Vennarucci Lecturer of Classics, Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University of Arkansas, U.S.A. Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of fixed-point retailing in the city of ancient Rome between the 2nd c BCE and the 2nd/3rd c CE. Changes in the socio-economic environment during the 2nd c BCE caused the structure of Rome’s urban retail system to shift from one chiefly reliant on temporary markets and fairs to one typified by permanent shops. As shops came to dominate the architectural experience of Rome’s streetscapes, shopkeepers took advantage of the increased visibility by focusing their marketing strategies on their shop designs. Through this process, the shopkeeper and his shop actively contributed to urban placemaking and the distribution of an urban identity at Rome. Design/methodology/approach – This paper employs an interdisciplinary approach in its analysis, combining textual, archaeological, and art historical materials with comparative history and modern marketing theory. Research limitation/implications – Retailing in ancient Rome remains a neglected area of study on account of the traditional view among economic historians that the retail trades of pre-industrial societies were primitive and unsophisticated. This paper challenges traditional models of marketing history by establishing the shop as both the dominant method of urban distribution and the chief means for advertising at Rome.
