PHYLOGENY AND HISTORICAL BIOGEOGRAPHY OF LIMPETS OF THE ORDER PATELLOGASTROPODA BASED ON MITOCHONDRIAL DNA SEQUENCES TOMOYUKI NAKANO AND TOMOWO OZAWA Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Nagoya University, Nagoya 464-8602,Japan (Received 29 March 2003; accepted 6June 2003) ABSTRACT Using new and previously published sequences of two mitochondrial genes (fragments of 12S and 16S ribosomal RNA; total 700 sites), we constructed a molecular phylogeny for 86 extant species, covering a major part of the order Patellogastropoda. There were 35 lottiid, one acmaeid, five nacellid and two patellid species from the western and northern Pacific; and 34 patellid, six nacellid and three lottiid species from the Atlantic, southern Africa, Antarctica and Australia. Emarginula foveolata fujitai (Fissurellidae) was used as the outgroup. In the resulting phylogenetic trees, the species fall into two major clades with high bootstrap support, designated here as (A) a clade of southern Tethyan origin consisting of superfamily Patelloidea and (B) a clade of tropical Tethyan origin consisting of the Acmaeoidea. Clades A and B were further divided into three and six subclades, respectively, which correspond with geographical distributions of species in the following genus or genera: (AÍ) north eastern Atlantic (Patella ); (A2) southern Africa and Australasia ( Scutellastra , Cymbula-and Helcion)', (A3) Antarctic, western Pacific, Australasia ( Nacella and Cellana); (BÍ) western to northwestern Pacific (.Patelloida); (B2) northern Pacific and northeastern Atlantic ( Lottia); (B3) northern Pacific (Lottia and Yayoiacmea); (B4) northwestern Pacific ( Nipponacmea); (B5) northern Pacific (Acmaea-’ânà Niveotectura) and (B6) northeastern Atlantic ( Tectura). Approximate divergence times were estimated using geo logical events and the fossil record to determine a reference date. -

He was educated at Launceston High School where he served as a prefect. In 1934 he won the Hemingway and Robertson Scholarship. 1 At that time he had completed a commercial course at Launceston High School and was proceeding further with accountancy studies. After leaving school Lloyd worked at D & W Murray wholesale and supply company in both Hobart and Launceston. He joined the 40th Battalion in 19392 and from May 1942 to November 1945 served with the RAAF attached to 90 and 92 Squadrons3. He became an instructor in the Central Flying School and from this time onwards flying became his life. On 12 April 1941 Lloyd Jones married Athalie Jean Flint of Hobart in Hobart. They had three daughters. Instrumental in forming the Southern branch of the Tasmanian Aero Club in 1945 he was subsequently appointed Manager and Chief Flying Instructor of the newly formed Aero Club of Southern Tasmania in 1948. An accident at Cambridge airport in July 1960 left him with serious injuries and curtailed his flying career. At that time he had clocked up 10,776 hours flying time. 4 An adventurous and skilled pilot, Lloyd Jones was the first photographer/pilot to take aerial photographs of the rugged mountains, lakes and beaches of South West Tasmania. -

The mountain itself is named after its resemblance to a gold mining cradle. It has four named summits: In order of height: Cradle Mountain 1,545 mtrs (5,069 ft) Smithies Peak 1,527 mtrs (5,010 ft) Weindorfers Tower 1,459 mtrs (4,787 ft) Little Horn 1,355 mtrs (4,446 ft) When it was proposed to tackle Cradle Mountain on the 1st day of our week’s walking, Verna was heard to ponder the wisdom of such an attempt on the first day. As on a previous trip, when our group undertook to climb Mt Strzelecki on day one on Flinders Island, it took the remaining week to recover! Fortunately not many of our current party heard her. So off we set at 8.30am to climb to Kitchen Hut via the Horse Track around Crater Lake from our base at Waldheim Cabins (950 metres). It was not long into the walk when I, for one, was thankful to have gloves. -

The Wellington Park Historic Track & Hut Network Assessment Project is a project of the Wellington Park Management Trust. The project is funded by a grant from the Tasmanian government Urban Renewal and Heritage Fund (URHF). The project is being undertaken on a consultancy basis by the author, Anne McConnell. There have been major changes in the fire regime of southwestern Tasmania over the past 170 years. The fire regime has changed from an Aboriginal fire regime of frequent low-intensity fires in buttongrass moorland (mostly in spring and autumn) with only the occasional high-intensity forest fire, to the early European fire regime of frequent high-intensity fires in all vegetation types, to a regime of low to medium intensity buttongrass moorland fires and finally to the current regime of few fires. These changes in the fire regime resulted in major impacts to the region's fire-sensitive vegetation types during the early European period, while the current low fire frequency across much of southwestern Tasmania has resulted in a large proportion of the region's fire-adapted buttongrass moorland being classified as old-growth. These extensive areas of old-growth buttongrass moorland mean that the potential for another large-scale ecologically damaging wildfire is high and, to avoid this, it would be better to re-introduce a regime oflow-intensity fires into the region.
