Paintings and sculpture by School of Paris artists will be offered for sale including a selection of works on paper by Marc Chagall. The artist’s nostalgic Couple sur le village (estimate: US$300,000-400,000) is a colourful gouache depicting many of the elements from Chagall’s rich pictorial language including the images of the lovers, the artist by his easel, farm animals and the Shtetel, ever present in the background. A further gouache by Chagall, Le fiancé Volant of 1966 (estimate: US$100,000-150,000), is a colourful sheet that also returns to many of Chagall’s favourite characters. Three works on paper by the artist addressing Biblical subjects will also be offered.

L’INVITÉ / Dani Karavan Rencontre avec le grand artiste israélien à qui l’on doit de nombreuses œuvres installées dans des lieux publics en Israël, aux États-Unis, au Japon, en Corée et en Europe. En France, on connaît notamment son Axe majeur à Cergy-Pontoise. S’il se revendique comme sculpteur, il part toujours du lieu. À 88 ans, chaleureux, simple et direct, Dani Karavan continue de travailler. Où êtes-vous né ? la construction de Tel-Aviv, aujourd’hui on est au centre- Dani Karavan/ Je suis né à Tel-Aviv, en 1930. Mes parents ville. Il n’y avait que quelques maisons autour, et puis le sont arrivés ici quand ils avaient 18 ans, en 1920, comme sable. Je marchais pieds nus la plupart du temps, ce sont pionniers. Ils venaient de la ville de Lvov (en Pologne, ces sensations différentes qui m’ont marqué, le sable très aujourd’hui en Ukraine), appelée aussi Lemberg, au chaud, le sable mouillé. Je crois avoir créé mes premiers xixe siècle, au temps de l’annexion par l’Autriche-Hongrie. bas-reliefs avec mes pieds (rires). Soltes Center for Jewish Civilization, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057, USA; [email protected] Received: 4 November 2019; Accepted: 10 January 2020; Published: 6 February 2020 Abstract: Mieke Bal’s concept of “migratory aesthetics” and the observation by Saloni Mathur and Anne Ring Peterson that “traditional notions of location, origin and authenticity seem obsolete and in urgent need of reconsideration” perfectly encompass the phrase “Jewish art”, and within that difficult-to-define subject, Israeli art (which, among other things, is not always “Jewish”). As Hava Aldouby has noted, Israeli art presents a unique inflection of the global condition of mobility—which in fact contributes to the problem of easily defining the category of “Israeli art”. Nothing could be more appropriate to the discussion of Israeli art, or to the larger definitional problem of “Jewish art” than to explore it through Nicolas Bourriaud’s botanical metaphor of the “radicant”, and thus the notion of “radicant art”. The important distinction that Bourriaud offers between radical and radicant plants—whereby the former type depends upon a central root, deep-seated in a single nourishing soil site, whereas the latter is an “organism that grows its roots and adds new ones as it advances ::: ” with “ ::: a multitude of simultaneous or successive enrootings”—is a condition that may be understood for both Israeli and Jewish art, past and present: Aldouby’s notion that the image of the Wandering Jew offers the archetypal radicant, informs both the “altermodernity” concept and Israeli art.
