The Chairman's Notes

This afternoon we welcome the players, fans, Management and officials of Bideford AFC here to the Denplan after their long journey up from the West Country. It is a trip of 155 miles and must be one of the longest in this league. And they have to do the same trip in reverse after the match! Still, we had to do the same trip in December, when the Citizens overcame the Robins by two goals to one.

Both clubs are only one point apart and are both are next to each other just in the top half of the table. Winchester do have two games in hand, but it will be a close game today. Matt Evans is suspended for this game following his sending off for two yellow against Larkhall last Saturday.

We are through to the semi finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second year running following our one nil win over Sholing on Tuesday night. The scoreline could have been greater but for a fine display by their goalkeeper Gosney. We are now in the draw for the semis with Basingstoke and AFC Bournemouth also through so far. Hartney Wintney and AFC Totton are still to play next Tuesday.

Two notes for your diaries off the pitch. As usual, we will be venue for the end of the Winchester 10K race on Sunday 26th February. We will also be hosting the annual Winchester City Classic Car and Bike Meet once again on Bank Holiday Monday 29th May from 8am to 12 noon. Please come if you can and if you are able to help, please let me know. It is a big event and we can do with all the help that we can get.

Another bit of information is that we have changed the day of any home midweek games from Wednesday to Tuesday. There are none in the diary at the moment, but in future Tuesday will be the night for such matches.

Kind Regards

Paul Murray

Malcolm's Welcome

We welcome Bideford to Winchester for this afternoon’s game. The only previous game between the clubs prior to this season was the 2004 F. A. Vase semi final where we won the second leg 4-0 after the first leg finished all square at 3-3, with Andy Forbes and Ian Mancey scoring three times for Winchester over the two legs. That season both ourselves and Bideford finished champions of their league with impressive records so this was a good result for us.The two clubs could have also met in this season’s F. A. Trophy if Bideford had beaten Fleet, but in the last Saturday game before Christmas we won 2-1 at Bideford with Stuart Green and a late Craig Feeney penalty giving us the points having been 1-0 behind at the interval, but looking the more likely team to score during the first half.

Bideford football club were formed in 1890’s and spent a lot of their early career in the North Devon League and were in that league until they joined the Western League in 1949. They won division 3 of this league at the first attempt with 19 wins and 1 draw from 20 league games. Two seasons later they won Division 2 scoring 179 goals from 36 league games in the process. They spent the next 20 seasons in the top flight of Western League finishing champions three times and runners up three times before being promoted to the Southern League, where they stayed three seasons finishing in the top five in the first two of these.

On leaving the Southern League they rejoined the Western League where they spent a further 35 seasons, but after finishing champions in five of the last nine of these returned to the Southern League. In 2011/12 they won the Southern League Division 1 South and West title and were promoted to the Premier Division where after finishing 8th in 2013/14 they were relegated last season.

In 1964/65 having been beaten seven times in the 4th qualifying round of the F. A. Cup they finally reached the 1st round proper of the competition, but lost to Colchester after a replay. They also reached this round in 1973/74, 1977/78 and 1981/82, but also suffered a further seven defeats in the 4th qualifying round. In addition to their F. A. Vase semi final appearance in 2003/04 they also reached the quarter finals of this competition in 2006/07 and 2008/09.

Full International players to represent Bideford are Leighton Phillips who won 58 caps for Wales from 1971 to 1981, and the late Dermot Curtis who scored 8 goals in 17 games for the Republic of Ireland.

The current Bideford manager Sean Joyce, who has been in charge since 1998, made a total of 200 football league appearances for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City and Torquay United. Several other former Bideford players have played in the football league, while John Hore one of their former managers made a total of 593 Football League appearances in his playing career.

I have visited Bideford once while on holiday in Chittlehampton, on the same holiday I also visited Barnstaple.

18 7 A brief history of Bideford F.C. Winchester City 4 Shortwood 3

Bideford was first formed in the Late 1890’s and was then called “Bideford By Malcolm Clarke United”. It was nicknamed the Robins, due to its red shirts, which it is still known as today. 8 17 Evesham United 3 Winchester City 1 By Simon Purfield

Evesham hit back from going a goal down to clinch a well earned 3-1 victory against in-form Winchester City at a breezy Jubilee Stadium on Wednesday night.

Winchester arrived with seven victories from their last eight Evo-Stik Southern South & West games but were soundly beaten by the Robins` who after two league victories inside a week remain in 3rd spot and three points behind second placed Tiverton Town. Hot-shot Craig Feeney fired the Citizens into a 27th minute lead with his 28th goal in all competitions but second-half goals by Lance Smith, Liam Harding and Adam Mann ensured United their 9th home win of the campaign and bring to an end Winchester`s impressive run of results.

The start was delayed by five minutes due to the visitor`s late arrival and it was United who began on the attack with Smith and Lewis Binns both testing City keeper Lewis Noice early doors and Nick Stanley sending a drive just over.

Kevin Sawyer then made a brave block to keep out the dangerous Feeney but against the run of play United fell behind on 27 minutes. Sawyer made a superb save low down to his right from Howard Neighbour but the ball fell kindly to Feeney who had the simple task of heading home from six yards. United responded immediately with top marksman Smith sending a well timed header inches over following good work by Garyn Preen down the right.

United went on to finish the half on the attack, Noice gathered at the second attempt from Stanley and Mann`s glancing header brushed the far post after more neat skills by the speedy Preen.

The second-half was only two minutes old when Smith danced clear down the left and from a tight angle shot beyond Norris into the far corner with his 24th League and Cup goal this season.

Youngster Archie Haskayne who made an a favourable impression in his first start for the Red and Whites, went near after a surging run down the middle but with 66 minutes on the clock United deservedly took a 2-1 lead. Stanley`s free-kick was only cleared as far asHarding on the edge of the box and the central defender cleverly found the target with a measured finish into the roof of the net. United were now in full control and went on to complete the scoring 17 minutes from time. Substitute Paul Fahy made a bursting run on the right and found Mann who took the ball in his stride before giving Noice no chance with a wonderful strike from 20 yards.

With the three points in the bag, United continued to press looking for more goals and replacement Mark Magee almost got a fourth before the end but Noice got down We are an established registered charity which addresses the effects of quickly to save at his near post. homelessness and vulnerability through specialist practical and emotional support, 16 and proactive prevention, empowering positive change.
