All parents, parishioners, clergy, students, staff and all who have an interest in Catholic education are most welcome and encouraged to attend. Please take the opportunity to engage in this most valuable discussion on:

Response to Toronto Coalition for Equity in Education The Board approved various recommendations contained in the report which summarizes a collaborative response to the four areas identified as major priorities by the delegation of the Toronto Coalition for Equity in Education. The four areas include the development of an inclusive K-2 curriculum; International Languages, English as a Second Language, Black Cultural Programs; and Employment Equity and Safe Schools.

Board ready to move forward with community consultation on Draft Long Term Accommodation and Program Plan The Toronto Catholic District School Board Draft Long-Term Accommodation and Program Plan (2007–2017) was approved in principle, and will be submitted as a draft document to the Ministry of Education for information.

Extensive community consultation will take place this spring on the draft plan, with one meeting to be held in each Trustee ward. Dates, times and locations for those meetings will be communicated to all stakeholders including parents, staff, students, parishes and community members.

Some of the underlying guiding principles of this draft plan include: • providing a reasonable presence of Catholic Schools across the City • retaining and strengthening religious ties and affiliations with the local parish • being sympathetic to Catholic education, its goals and traditions

The draft plan also includes consideration of the following alternative strategies to address enrolment issues: • expansion of and options for innovative specialty program opportunities; • review of admissions policy and consideration of school boundaries at strategic locations; • development of strategies to promote the TCDSB in order to increase and retain enrolment.

The Director of Education will continue to participate in multilateral discussions involving the coterminous School Boards, the City of Toronto and the Provincial Government, regarding a ‘made in Toronto’ solution.

Local chess club aims to checkmate opponents LISA QUEEN East York Riverdale Mirror 03/29/07

Of all the valuable lessons the young chess club members at East York's Canadian Martyrs Catholic School are learning, perhaps one of the most important is not to be intimidated by anyone bigger or smarter.

Other than Grade 8 student Julian Lamanna, who was recruited to the club by coach Stephanie Perez, the team's members are in Grades 1 through 4. These youngsters, age six to 10 who routinely play older and more experienced competitors, are taking the Toronto Catholic District School Board's chess world by storm.

Take Grade 2 student Katherine Eroles, for example. Although she only started learning how to play the game less than two months ago, she took second place at the board finals Monday after coming out on the losing end of a tie- breaker in her sixth round of play. The event also marked the first time Katherine, who plays in the Grade 3 category, played against the clock.

Not only do players have to strategize and make their moves quickly, they have to remember to punch the clock so they don't waste valuable time. It's a lot to remember when you're still learning the finer points of the game, Perez said. "She (Katherine) is very calm, she's extremely calm," she said. "I know she's focusing. She's focusing on her player's (competitor's) moves. She knows what's legal, what's illegal."

In addition to Katherine, 10 players from the club moved on to the finals after dominating at the south regionals last week. That includes Perez's son Joshua, in Grade 2 but playing in the Grade 4 category, and Julian, the only member of the team playing at his appropriate age level. They emerged with Katherine in first place from the south regionals. Six girls who advanced to the girls' finals played Monday while five boys who moved on will compete at the boys' finals today.

"I'm more than proud. I'm proud they are the youngest (team) in the entire board with the exception of the Grade 8 student (Julian)," Perez said. "When I tell my Grade 4s 'You're playing a Grade 8, they say fine.' You tell another child that and they say 'No, they're too old for me, they're too good for me.' That's why I'm so proud of them, they take the challenge."

Team members are dedicated to their hobby, which they practice every lunch hour. "My players are willing, if we don't have use of the library or computer room, to sit on the floor," Perez said. "They want to learn and it's wonderful when a child comes to you wanting to learn."

Perez, who also works in the school's international languages program, admits she only knew the basic moves of chess when she launched the club. When her older son Franklin, now in Grade 4, complained two years ago he kept losing chess matches, Perez decided to form a team at the school.

Perez, who credits principal Mel Perrone for supporting the club when many others weren't interested, was impressed with research indicating children who play chess develop stronger math and language skills. She is inspired by her students.

"It (the club) has enriched my life with their wonderful interest to learn," she said. "Chess is an interesting puzzle. I'm very glad to be with them and (see them) be willing to challenge themselves to solve the puzzle. Sometimes, they don't solve the puzzle. That's OK. We've learned to accept a loss with a smile."

A visit of universal proportions at St. Marcellus school DOMINIK KUREK Etobicoke Guardian 03/29/07

St. Marcellus Catholic School student Melanie, left, and Miss Universe Inga Skaya pose at a school assembly Tuesday. Miss Universe gave an inspirational talk to students in the auditorium, telling them to set goals and focus on achieving them. DENNIS HANAGAN

A beauty queen treated the students of St. Marcellus Catholic School with her grace and charm, spreading a message of big dreams leading to success in life. Inga Skaya, 21, current Miss Universe Canada spoke to students from grades 4 to 8, Tuesday.

Skaya began her speech telling the students of when she was in school and being really good in track and field, the 100-metre dash. One year she decided to attempt the 400-metre and ran ahead of the pack. She kept looking back constantly to see where her competitors were and as she did a racer ran past her and left her in second place. "Second place is just as good as first, as long as you do your best. Any competition you're in is only a competition against yourself. Stay focused and do the best you can." She said that race reminds her not worry about what others are telling you what you can or cannot do.

She went on to talk about having big dreams. "At one point in my life, I wanted to be a ballerina. I've been dancing for 15 years." However, she realized she wasn't good enough to be a professional ballerina so she became a choreographer. "I was still dancing but in a different way." She told the students to keep themselves dream oriented and never give up. "The most important thing I have learned, hands down, in life, is positive thinking. If you work hard enough it's possible. You have to keep trying and trying and trying." Skaya told the students about being separated from her home in her childhood. She was bullied at school. "I lived in a shelter and I had to wear clothes that were donated to me. You have to be considerate because you don't know where people are coming from. Be sensitive to other people."

The school's principal Vince Moretti said having Skaya speak to the students is important, "to send a positive message to try your best and strive for success." After her presentation, Skaya said she hopes her speech will teach the children, "to stay positive, stay focused, dream big, never give up."

It was a terrific event that saw many of the parents grt for all involved as purpose was to raise funds for their library and give the children appropriate resources to learn. Many local businesses within the community donated some amazing auction items. The evening was a great success. Not only did everyone have a great time, but the fundraising event raised a significant amount of funds for their library. Much of the success goes to Justine McVeigh and her organizing committee.

The event organizers (left to right) Jennifer, Carla, Sharon, Jennifer, Justine, Wendy, and Marcella are all smiles as they successfully put on another highly entertaining event with proceeds going to St Pius X Catholic School's library

ST. DENIS "DREAMIN' GREEN" FUNDRAISER

St. Denis Catholic school on Balsam Avenue has decided to 'Green up' their very concrete schoolyard! With seed money from their parent council group, CSAC, a group of parents have taken up the challenge to convert the barren expanse of asphalt and dirt into a stimulating natural space for learning and playing. They held their "Dream'n Green Dance" and Silent Auction at the Toronto Hunt Club with live music by the Jeanine Mackie Band. The highlight of the evening was the live auction of student artwork created under the direction of local artist Heather Dunn. The event was a huge success and raised enough funds to cover the schoolyard greening design, landscaping and purchase of materials for phase 1 of the schoolyard transformation. It's amazing what people can do when their minds are set to it! Beach women honoured for making a difference Women of Distinction praised for hard work JOANNA LAVOIE beach/riverdale mirror, Mar. 29, 2007

Long-time community volunteer and local historian Gene Domagala was smitten Wednesday evening surrounded by some of his favourite women. As the main organizer of Community Centre 55's inaugural Women of Distinction Awards, Domagala had the honour of selecting and congratulating some of the community's best female movers and shakers, affectionately dubbed Gene's Queens.

"These women have done better than any male I can think of," he told a packed room of guests at the Balmy Beach Club. "They're the backbone of our community. They go beyond the call of duty." Domagala said the recipients came from all walks of life and although nearly 200 were nominated, he faced the daunting task of choosing only 37 outstanding women.

Bob Murdoch, Community Centre 55's executive director, accompanied the recipients to the front to receive a gift and special certificate thanking them for their tireless efforts to make the city and the country a better place to be and for their contribution to the well being and future of the community they serve. It also highlighted their leadership and commitment to excellence.

Mirror columnist and well-known Beach volunteer Glenn Cochrane served as the evening's master of ceremonies, offering delightful insights about each recipient. "Good evening ladies. Men, you're on your own tonight," Cochrane said before beginning the roll call of award recipients, which also included a surprise honoree: Domagala's wife of 41 years, Pat.
