> All new and beautiful! All categories of hotels open in Paris, and many of them stand out for their designer decor and originality. This year, the Elegancia group has opened the hotel Angely, which adds to the accommodation offer in the Marais / Oberkampf district. With its guest rooms designed by cabinets of creative designers, the Angely offers guests the choice of being an angel or a demon. The hotel Champs-Elysées Mac Mahon, which has been closed since the beginning of 2011, reopens after a complete makeover in an Empire style with a contemporary feel. Ideally situated below the , the hotel offers a unique atmosphere in its 35 guest rooms and 5 suites, a lounge bar and a terrace with a view. In the same district, Book Inn , an independent hotel group, unveils its new hotel full of charm: the Hôtel Elysée Secret. This new boutique hotel with its designer and sensual atmosphere is a new secret Parisian spot. With an ambience inspired by the spirit of 18th-century boudoir hotels, the Elysée Secret offers 26 guest rooms in the categories ‘Charme’, ‘Secret’,’ Boudoir’ and ‘Suites Trianon’. The Newhotel Roblin has reopened after full refurbishment of its 77 guest rooms. The decor of this establishment, entrusted to luxury decorator Flamand, has been personalized on the theme of Paris’s various districts. Behind its listed facade, everything is new! One of Paris’s tourist gems, the Hôtel Montmartre Mon Amour, has just reopened a few steps from Sacré Coeur. Twenty-four rooms, devoted to love, bear the names of famous couples. The reception is in a rococo style and the hotel corridors are decorated in the colour scarlet. Stella Cadente is the designer behind the renovation of the Hôtel Original Paris, well-situated between the chic area of Place des Vosges and the lively . Exuding luxury, extravagance, poetry and elegance, the Hôtel Original lives up to its name. Fans of myths should go to the Legend Hôtel, in the Montparnasse district. This hotel promises guests a gripping and mysterious stay, as indicated by the intriguing

suite ‘Passage secret’. Or to the Maison Favart, in another district (2nd arrondissement) of Paris. This house and hotel, below the Opéra-Comique theatre, takes the name of Charles Favard who formerly ran the institution. The atmosphere is full of 18th-century Paris, musical and festive.

> Up-coming Many other projects will soon follow on from these new addresses to give Paris a continually changing and renewed accommodation offer. Among the most eagerly- awaited in 2013/2014 is the Buddha-Bar Hotel, which will be the brand’s first Parisan hotel. It is requesting a five-star rating for its 56 guest rooms (including 21 suites) housed in an 18th-century mansion owned by the Qatar group. Another much-awaited opening, the first So by will replace the Sofitel Arc de Triomphe; and the Molitor swimming pool, a masterpiece of art deco heritage, will be converted into a 124-room 4-star hotel. The Singapore group Ascott, present in Paris until now under the brand Citadines, plans to convert the former Hôtel Costes K, in avenue Kléber, into an upscale apartment hotel under the name of Ascott Arc de Triomphe Paris 5*. It is also in the heart of the 16th arrondissement, close to the Arc de triomphe, that the Peninsula chain will open a new 200-bedroom establishment in the former Kléber international conference centre. Between now and 2014, the hotel Cheval Blanc, with 100 guest rooms, will open at the Samaritaine. The former department store will house this with magnificent views of the Seine, plus shops, offices and even a crèche. In the same period, the palace Plaza Athénée will extend its premises to create new guest rooms, following the purchase of adjoining buildings. And the glam rock brand Zadig et Voltaire plan to launch their first ever hotel (with an ultra select concept) in the heart of the chic and discreet 7th arrondissement. Major projects include, the opening of the Grand hôtel du Palais-Royal, a new luxury hotel and the reopening of the Prince de Galles, the jewel in the crown of Parisian hotels, after full renovation of the establishment.

AT ALL PRICES!

With its wide selection of hotels, Paris appeals to all visitors, whatever their budget. Hotels in all categories are recognized for their excellent price quality ratio, whilst the introduction of a new hotel classification in the summer of 2012 (the previous one dated back to 1986) provides French and foreign customers with criteria that is now compatible with international hotels with ratings of from 1 to 5 stars. Since 23 July 2012, the old classification is obsolete and signs showing the former star ratings should

have been removed. Parisian hotels have taken the opportunity of the change in the classification system to modernize their establishments.

> Budget: Paris in the top three least expensive cities! Budget hotels are well represented amongst the extraordinary choice of accommodation available in Paris … and extremely competitive. For a night in a double room in a one-star hotel, expect to pay between 40 and 80 euros and for a two-star hotel, between 80 and 120 euros. On average, a room in a budget-category hotel costs 80-90 euros.

> Mid-range: numerous hotels in Paris Hotels in the mid-range category are also good value for money. Three-star and four- star hotels provide a high standard of comfort at prices ranging from 120 euros to 220 euros per night for a double room. Competitive prices which put Paris on a highly competitive level compared to other international cities such as London, Brussels, Geneva or New York. Three-star and four-star hotels are also numerous in the capital, which makes it easy to find an available rooms at competitive prices.

> Upscale: French-style luxury The introduction of the new hotel classification (the previous one dated back to 1986) has speeded up the reform and modernization of the Paris hotel industry. A result of this has been the new five-star rating to symbolize the highest certification. This new category is a veritable guage of appreciation and comparison, notably for foreign clientele. The five-star rating is a widely-used standard abroad; it facilitates comparison between equivalent hotels throughout the world and now enables these French hotels to promote the upscale amenities and services that have given them a global reputation. Some 50 hotels have a five-star rating, and a number of four-star hotels also have very luxurious establishments. Upscale hotels in Paris offer a wide variety of different atmospheres and environments and all offer high quality services for the greatest comfort of their guests. From large historical hotels to more intimate boutique hotels, there is something to suit all tastes.

> The Palace distinction for Paris’s prestigious grand establishments In order to promote Paris’s appeal as a luxury capital, the French ministry of tourism intiated an officially-recognized ‘palace’ distinction, based on the criteria of a panel of judges, in 2011. Five historic establishments have already been awarded this distinction in Paris: Le Bristol, The Four Seasons Hotel George V, , the Plaza Athénée, and the Park Paris Vendôme. Of course, these are not the only exceptional establishments in Paris; previously seven Parisian hotels were implicitly considered as palaces because they were recognized as such by their guests. Their history, their location and their distinctive decor contribute to their renown. (The Hôtel de Crillon, the Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière and The Ritz complete this prestigious list). Palaces offered guests a choice of 1,800 or so spacious guest rooms (average surface area of 30 m²) in 2012. However, some suites exceed 100 m 2 and occupy two, even three storeys! Furthermore, palaces must offer a wide range of services: concierge service, multilingual staff, a fitness centre, a spa, skin and body care treatments and massages, and outstanding restaurants. Hotels must have existed for 12 months before aspiring to obtain this distinction. Six other establishments may receive the distinction in the coming months: The Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière, The Royal Raffles, The Shangri- La, The Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula and The Hôtel Crillon. Parisian hotels are not just about luxury, they are also about innovation: you’ll find starred chefs like Yannick Alléno at Le Meurice or Thierry Fréchon at Le Bristol, at the hotels’ prestigious restaurants, and celebrated barmen like Yann Daniel at the Park Hyatt.

FOR ALL TASTES!

As well as having something to suit everyone’s budget, Parisian hotels also have all types of styles and decor to suit everyone’s taste: from independent hotels to leading chain hotels, from standard interiors to the most zany decor, from hotels with a unique decor to those infused with history, or even those devoted to well-being, artistic discovery or with exceptional settings.

> Designer hotels: welcome to the world of fashion and design

For several years now, hotels have been increasingly calling on concept designers and interior decorators for the design and decor of their establishments. The distinction between them and boutique hotels is not easy, and yet design hotels are a category

apart. In these establishments, particular attention is paid to the interior decoration, designer furniture and to the use of new materials and the latest technology The designer touch is instantly recognizable in these hotels. Visitors stay here to experience the creative world of a designer: Jacques Garcia for the Hôtel Costes, the Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière or L’Hôtel, Andrée Putman for the Pershing Hall, and Philippe Starck for the partial makeover of Le Meurice, Le Royal Monceau-Raffles and Mama Shelter. The designer Christian Lacroix also left his signature on the interior decoration of the Hôtel du Petit Moulin, the Hôtel Bellechasse and the Hôtel Notre-Dame, while Claudio Colucci created the lighting concept at the Hôtel Lumen. Finally, we owe the ambiance of Le Placide and the Intercontinental Marceau to Bruno Borrione. These hotels are everything except conventional and are the fruit of the imagination of talented concept designers, which have resulted in some fine creations: the newly revamped Napoleon-style hotel La Maison Champs-Elysées, a 5-star 57-bedroom establishment with garden and fumoir by the Belgian Martin Margiela couture house, the designer who sees all the world in white; or designer Bambi Sloane’s Anglo-Saxon fantasy for the Saint-James Paris hotel, half-chateau half-family home, located in the 16th arrondissement. At Jules et Jim, in the Marais, the atmosphere is ‘gay friendly’ and very arty to judge by the choice of art works on show in collaboration with Parisian gallery owners. Suppliers to this 23-bedroom establishment have also been carefully chosen, and include Moët & Belvedere, the Maison Francis Kurkdjian for perfume, and Kusmi tea. The Hôtel Crayon, a 3-star 27-bedroom hotel situated close to the Palais- Royal, has a homely feel to it, with decor by Parisian artist, Julie Gauthron. The furniture is sourced from second-hand shops and the colourful rooms have a strong identity and a bucolic atmosphere. In recent years, more and more concept designers and interior decorators have been called on to decorate and design the interiors of hotels in Paris giving rise to the creative expression of renowned international talented designers like Matali Crasset at the Hi Matic hotel. Located in the trendy 11th arrondissement of Paris, the hotel has 42 environmentally-friendly guest rooms that are both practical and avant-garde: they have elements of a city hotel, country lodging, and a fun and functional cabin. At the 29-room hotel O, created by the famous designer Ora-ïto, and situated in rue Hérold in the 1st arrondissement, the accommodation is designed as a haven of peace away from the stress of urban life. The enthusiasm of the general public for cooking is creating a new trend: gourmet hotels. Creativity also applies to cooking! The Hôtel Thoumieux, with 15 guest rooms designed by India Mahdavi, is the result of a sensational encounter between the cook Jean-François Piège and the multi-talented Thierry Costes. A combination of floral fabrics, wild cat motifs and marble give the place a rare sensuality and distinctive atmosphere. In another genre, the Hôtel Cadran, opened in 2009, is particularly known for its sublime chocolate bar, the very heart of the establishment. Finally, the brand new Auberge Flora, opened at the end of 2012, confirms this trend: an inn with a gîte and restaurant, which gives the 9th arrondissement a holiday atmosphere.

> Arty hotels: Paris loves artists These Parisian hotels give contemporary artists new settings for creative expression. At the Hôtel Particulier Montmartre, for example, each of the five suites has been entrusted to an up-and-coming or celebrated contemporary artist. The Hôtel Platine is the place to stay if you are looking for decor on the theme of cinema and Hollywood. Situated close to the Eiffel Tower, the 46 guest rooms of this hotel are all devoted to the mythical star Marilyn Monroe. Art sets the scene in the lobby of the Méridien Étoile. Keycards are used to access the Executive rooms and also give access to the , Paris’s centre for contemporary creation. > Hotels and contemporary art: luxury, art and delight Luxury and contemporary art have always gone well together; the major Parisian hotels know this and have decided to honour the combination. Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris doesn’t do anything by halves and supports the latest art works more than ever: the establishment offers its own art gallery which from the first exhibitions has made a strong impression; its specialist bookshop enables guests to buy exceptional books about young contemporary artists, whilst art concierges, always on the lookout for what’s new in the art world, share their favourites and their recommendations for discovering Paris in a new way. Le Meurice has created a prize that rewards an up-and- coming artist on the French scene to help them to make themselves known abroad. The Paris Rive Gauche hotels launched a photographic prize five years ago; the winning photographer has their photos exhibited for a month at one of the group’s hotels. More recently, contemporary art has moved into the area close to the Pompidou Centre, in the new Jules et Jim hotel, which hosts exhibitions organized by galleries. Taking the concept even further, ‘The Box in Paris’ describes itself as ‘a house of contemporary art’, designed like a unique cultural, participative, fun and comfortable place to go to. This ‘house’ combines accommodation and a multidisciplinary art space hosting exhibitions, shows and dinners.

> Literary hotels Paris has many hotels with a literary spirit. Numerous hotels are linked to some literary figure or event or host literature-based events and activities. The Mathurin has a library with an original collection of 6,479 works by Albin Michel. The hotel Lutetia hosts many award ceremonies, such as the Médicis awards, the Antonin-Carême awards and the Elle magazine reader awards. It also organizes literary Saturdays and salons which are great for literature enthusiasts. At the Hyatt Madeleine, literary brunches take place one Sunday each month. The Apostrophe, a ‘poetry hotel’, has been designed by

Sandrine Alouf. At the Belle Juliette hotel, in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, guests discover the world of Juliette Récamier and can browse through old books in its literary bar. At the Pavillion des Lettres, the 26 guest rooms are decorated with texts by 26 authors including Anderson, Zola, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Voltaire.

> Boutique hotels: urban, designer, trendy! The expression comes from Anglo-Saxon countries. It applies to hotels with less than 50 rooms with contemporary charm, original very often designer interiors, and highly- personalized services, similar to those of a palace hotel. Despite being generally 4-star establishments, the range of prices may vary as some former two and three-star hotels have joined this category.

A forerunner of made-to-measure beauty, Anne Sémonin has created a menu of skin-care treatments for Le Bristol. As for the U-Spa Barrière, at Fouquet’s Barrière, its Roman temple style contemporary decor transports visitors into another era! Fans of Nuxe products will find all the expertise of this brand at the Mathurin and the Square. The first ‘detox’ hotel has also opened in Paris: as well as offering treatments, the Hôtel Gabriel has developed the concept of well-being to include good food, sleep, luminotherapy, etc. At the Westin Paris-Vendôme, the Six Senses spa, located on the rue de Castiglione, offers holistic techniques and therapeutic massages to revive you after a day’s work. > Micro hotels: small is beautiful This concept is all the rage at the moment and promises a completely new, exceptional experience. Designer hotel The Five offers a stay in a suite which can only be described as unique. With futuristic yet cosy decor, these hotel rooms are completely separate, like a single room apartment. At Cinq rue de Moussy, the fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa has created three rooms/apartments with a selection of designer furniture and an exceptional couture atmosphere. At the 6 Mandel, a guest room is available, tucked away in the heart of a 16th-century mansion house that has been converted into a venue for art exhibitions and private events. Six suites, each between 25 and 30 m 2, are available at Konfidentiel and are decorated in six different themes, such as the world of the kings of France or Marie-Antoinette.

> Hotels with a feel of the past: from Lutetia to Paris Although the trend is for more contemporary decor, some hotels prefer to evoke a period style atmosphere inspired by the past. Art deco at the Lutetia hotel, cinema history with the Lumière brothers at the Scribe. The 17th century sets the scene at the Pavillon de la Reine, whilst at the Raphaël, it is the 18th century that is the focus. At the Hôtel Champs-Élysées Mac-Mahon, a few steps from the Arc de Triomphe, there is a contemporary Empire style, inspired by the Napoleonic era but adapted to today’s tastes. They all take us on a historical journey.

> Hotels with a garden: the countryside in Paris Looking for a bit of greenery? Some hotels have unsuspected delights, havens of peace far from the noise and bustle of the city. At the Saint-James & Albany, a former 17th century private mansion and residence of the Duc de Noailles, you can enjoy lunch in a delightful courtyard garden. The Renaissance Paris Hôtel Le Parc Trocadéro, which reopened in 2011 after a full renovation, boasts a 1,200 m 2 tree-lined terrace, one of the largest in Paris. Near Trocadéro, the Saint-James Paris is surrounded by superb gardens, reserved for residents of this unique chateau hotel. More atypical, the Pershing Hall has a plant wall in its dining room, illuminated by a lovely glass roof. If you’re looking for a refreshing break after some shopping in the boutiques on avenue Montaigne, then the courtyard garden of the summer restaurant at the Plaza Athénée is a haven of peace. In the 17th arrondissement, stop off at the garden restaurant of the Hotel Ampère and sample the menu of chef Yannick Tessier. Finally, the Hôtel de l’Abbaye, a few steps from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a former Benedictine convent offers a peaceful break.

> Bed & Breakfast: Paris with the Parisians

Staying with local residents is the latest thing. Bed & Breakfast and furnished- apartment accommodation is on the increase in Paris thanks to the creation of the ‘Hôtes Qualité Paris’ label of quality and the ‘Authentic B&B’ charter created by the Federation of Parisian Bed & Breakfast Professionals (FPPCH). Here is a way of living alongside Parisians. The network ‘Rue Amandine’ is an example of this growing trend; it offers accommodation at the homes of true Parisians, who will give you their advice and tips on eating out, places to go, culture, shopping and Parisian things to do off the beaten track. It has 15 or so addresses in Paris.

> Apartment exchanges Every year, more than 300,000 apartment exchanges take place throughout the world. Today, this phenomenon is increasing due to the economic recession and growing access to information via the Internet. In France, there are four overseas offers for every French offer. Naturally, Paris is a highly sought after destination and boasts a wealth of offers: from a one-room apartment to a mansion. Not forgetting photographers’ studios, small houses in the suburbs, etc. There are around 2,500 listings for the Paris Region on the website Trocmaison, (translated into 15 languages), including 2,000 for Paris itself.

> Green accommodation The Golden Keys concierge and the Green Key label, which recognizes good environmental management of tourist accommodation, are both working towards the same goals. Education about the environment, management of waste, water and energy are taken into account to satisfy a clientele that is sensitive to the protection of nature and keen to maintain good environmental practices during their holidays or during a business trip. Another (European) label, Ecolabel, certifies an establishment’s commitment to protecting the environment. Seven Parisian establishments have been awarded this label, which is a gauge of the committment to the environment as Ecolabel celebrates its 20th year of existence this year. The Accor group, for its part, has chosen an official eco-label for the manufacture of its bed linen, and has created its own environmental charter. As for the ISO 9001 certification, it assures quality, reinforced by the ISO 14001 standards that focus on the continued improvement of environmental performance. Also of note, the specific involvement of ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) with 30 or so voluntary hotel managers, who share the objective of receiving the Ecolabel.

> Hotels for non-residents: for a few drinks and clubbing

Hotels are great places to stay but for those who can’t afford to stay in them, there are some good ways of enjoying these select places. You can, for example, go and have a drink in some of these wonderful places and sometimes listen to music there. Panoramic bars, piano bars, concerts, cocktails (mixology), and even clubbing (with e.g. ‘Red Hours’ at the Plaza Athénée), hotel bars are becoming more and more popular places and more inventive in order to attract another type of clientele. The latest initiative to date: ‘Suite n°7, a series of private concerts at palaces ... A confidential event that has been taking place once a month since September 2012 in Paris and in the provinces, and which was launched with an acoustic set by the band Great Mountain Fire, at the Crillon. Other hotels go even, further making their establishments lively open places conducive to socializing and partying. Mama Shelter with its huge lobby comprising several bar and restaurant areas was certainly a pioneer of this idea. In February 2012, it was joined by the W Opéra, an American establishment, intended to bring the vibrant energy of New York to the Opéra district. The W lounge bar features a black lacquered bar. > Youth hostels: convivial and cheap

Paris is part of the world network of youth hostels which continues to grow. The capital now has some 20 hostels, comprising more than 2,000 beds. They are managed by non- profit making associations, a fact that guarantees attractive prices. What’s more this

accommodation is not reserved for young people or party goers; they are a cheap and convivial alternative to other types of accommodation. At less than 25 euros, guest rooms at these hostels offer basic comfort with or without a private bathroom, and amenities such as Internet access, launderette, breakfast, etc. The majority of Paris’s 20 or so hostels are affiliated to a group or network like HipHopHostels, whilst Saint Christopher’s Inn, at the end of La Villette basin, has more than 350 beds and plans to open another hostel in 2013 near to the Gare du Nord. Accommodation centres for young people are also present in the capital. These not only offer competitively-priced accommodation for individuals or groups of young people, they also offer cultural and sporting events. The MIJE network is in a central location, near to the Seine, and offers low-cost accommodation in magnificent mansions. Fine, well-situated and inexpensive, that too exists in Paris.

> Staying in a hotel with your pet

Some Parisian hotels accept dogs and other pets. Ask when you make your reservation. Establishments can ask for a fee of €5 to €15. The majority of hotels are very welcoming towards animal friends. Establishments are required by law to accept guide dogs. More information on www.parisinfo.com , rubric ‘Accommodation’
