    Spring Break in Paris Friday, March 21st to Sunday, March 30th, 2014 What you’ll do . Friday, March 21st – You’ll depart from Huntsville or Nashville International Airport bound for Europe. Usually there is a stop in one of the major cities of the east coast in order to catch your trans-Atlantic flight to Paris. Saturday, March 22nd – After flying through the night, you’ll land at Charles de Gaulle International Airport. After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, you’ll transfer into the city, usually by train. On evening one, there’s a short time for resting and refreshing at the hotel before heading out into the city for dinner and some sightseeing. You will ascend the 58-story Tour Montparnasse for the best views of Paris as the sun goes down and the lights come on in the city. Sunday, March 23rd– You’ll visit the Royal Palace of Versailles, just outside of Paris. In addition to touring the palace itself, you’ll want to visit the gardens, since Sunday is the only day the world-famous fountains are turned on. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Grand and Petit Trianon, small palaces built by the king on the grounds of Versailles in order to escape the pressures of palace life. Also not to be missed is the village-like hameau of Marie Antoinette. Later, you’ll head back to Paris for dinner and a visit to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, the bohemian quarter of Paris. In Montmartre, you’ll also visit the Place du Tertre, where an artist will paint your portrait for a price.

    Proceedings of the 3r International Conference on Best Practices in World Heritage: Integral Actions Menorca, Spain, 2-5 May 2018 PALERMO, CITY OF SYNCRETISM: RECOVERING A COMPLEX HISTORIC CENTRE HELPED BY AN AWARE LOCAL COMMUNITY Palermo, ciudad sincrética: recuperar un centro histórico complejo con la ayuda de una comunidad local consciente Giorgio Faraci (1) (1) Università degli Studi di Palermo - DARCH Dipartimento di Architettura, Palermo, Italia, [email protected] ABSTRACT The Italian site of Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as an example of a social- cultural syncretism between Western, Islamic and Byzantine cultures. Palermo has maintained its identity over the centuries as a complex and multicultural site. In 1993 the local government of Palermo, supported by the Sicilian Region with specific Laws and funds, launched a process of regeneration of the historic centre, restoring public monuments as well as encouraging recovery of private houses. A specific planning instrument such as the Piano Particolareggiato Esecutivo (PPE) was implemented and a special office was established to coordinate activities and funding. Local community developed a pro-active attitude over the years, demanding local government to promote more cooperation and coordination between the different stakeholders involved in the recovery process. The civil society emphasised the need to intervene not only on the urban and building fabric but also on the social one, starting from the weakest sections of the population. The support of civil society, with its bottom up approach, and the strong political will of local government, determined in the regeneration of the historic centre, made possible to speed up the process.

M athie( s study of the Thermidorian Reaction, of which the present volume is a translation, is a continuation of his history of the French Revolution, of which the English version was published in 1928. In form and character, however, there is a notable difference. In the case of the earlier work the limitations imposed by the publishers excluded all references and foot-notes, and the author had to refer the reader to his other published works for the evidence on which his conclusions were based. In the case of the present book no such limitations have been set, and M. Mathiei: has thus been able not only to state his con­ clusions, but to give the chain of reasoning by which they have been reached. The Thermidorian Reaction is therefore something more than a sequel to The French Revolution, which M. Mathiei:, with perhaps undue modesty, has described as a precis having no independent authority; it is not only a work of art, but a weighty contribution to historical science.     France and Paris were changed dramatically by the Enlightenment and ensuing French Revolution. Likewise, many of the monuments and buildings you’ll see on this walk were “reinvented” during the 18th century. The Panthéon, where this walk starts, began as a church sponsored by an absolute monarch and ended the century as a monument to the country’s most famous Enlightenment figures. The place de la Concorde, where the walk ends, saw one monarch celebrated with a statue and another executed on the same site. Saint-Sulpice and Saint- Thomas-d’Aquin were transformed from churches to secular “temples” and back to churches again. And the Palais du Luxembourg, Hôtel de Salm, and Palais Bourbon, homes at the beginning of the century to royalty and aristocrats, ended the century as homes to the country’s newly created democratic institutions. In addition to showcasing neoclassical buildings and monuments, the walk also provides an opportunity to wander through part of the Saint-Germain des Prés quarter, one of the city’s most lively and interesting neighborhoods.
