Julian Hirsch 2 Acknowledgements In some ways the groundwork for my thesis and work on the ONESC Initiative began more than five years ago in a kitchen in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. I was meeting Dr. Elizabeth Bloch Smith for the first time and could scarcely have imagined that our meeting would lead to my participation in an archaeological excavation in Israel that summer. After my first excavation, I was hooked. The spring before I came to Oberlin was filled with weekly meetings, readings, and discussions with Liz. I learned so much in that time and appreciate her continued guidance and support. If Liz was responsible for exposing me to just how fascinating the archaeology of the southern Levant was, Dr. Jeffrey Blakely was the person who helped me find the path where I could follow my passion at Oberlin. I still have my notes from the first day of the January 2017 Winter Term. I was amazed by everything Jeff knew about the history of biblical archaeology at the college and the history of the collection. If anything inspired me throughout my work, it was hearing vivid stories from Jeff about sitting in Harry Thomas Frank’s classroom learning about archaeology. Jeff has truly been my partner at every step of the way. I’ve consulted him for advice numerous times. Jeff kindly provided invaluable suggestions that only a true veteran of the field could offer. To give credit to Jeff in two more areas, Jeff certainly inspired my interest in the history of biblical archaeology and during the Winter Term in 2017 assigned me to work on the Bab edh-Dhra’ collection of Early Bronze Age tomb pots. -

In 1972–1973 a systematic archaeological survey of the map area was conducted by a team headed by Yehuda Dagan, on behalf of the Archaeological Survey of Israel and the Israel Antiquities Authority (formerly the Department of Antiquities and Museums). Compilation of Material A file for each site in the Survey archives includes a detailed report by the survey team members, plans, photographs and a register of the finds kept in the Authority’s stores. -

Excavating a Battle: The Intersection of Textual Criticism, Archaeology, and Geography The Problem of Hill City Just as similarities or variant forms of personal names can create textual problems, the same .( ֶּ֖ג ַבע) and Geba (גִּבְע ָ֔ ה) is true of geographic names. A case in point is the confusion of Gibeah Both names mean “Hill City”, an appropriate name for a city in the hill country of Benjamin, where other cities are named Lookout (Mizpeh) and Height (Ramah). Isaiah 10:29 also The Gibeah we are discussing here is near .( ִּג ְב ַ֥עת ש ֶּ֖אּול) distinguishes Geba from Gibeah of Saul the central ridge, near Ramah, north of Jerusalem. Geba is further east on the edge of the wilderness, near a descent to the Jordan Valley. It is across the valley from Michmash. Gibeah Gibeah is Saul’s capital near Ramah. It is a restoration of the Gibeah destroyed in Judges. -
Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -

From: Gifted Arab Gifted Arab Child in Israel, by Hanna David (pp. 124-142) The life story of Prof. Fadia Nasser-Abu Alhija Here is the life story of Prof. Fadia Nasser-Abu Alhija, who has succeeded in overcoming all possible barriers to higher education and becoming a role model for many Arab women and women in general. Prof. Fadia Nasser-Abu Alhija is professor at the School of Education of Tel Aviv University, where she heads the Department of Curriculum Planning and Instruction and the Program for Research, Measurement and Evaluation Methods. Previously, she was research coordinator for GRE testing at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, NJ (USA). Her main research topics are measurement and evaluation of gender- and culture-related achievements; evaluation of teachers and teaching, and the structural validity of testing methods. Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija earned her Ph.D. in Research, Evaluation, Measurement and Statistical Methods from the University of Georgia (U.S.) in 1997. Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija's areas of research are: research methods, measurement, evaluation and statistics. Her PhD thesis was: The Performance of Regression-Based Variations of the Screen Procedure for Determining the Number of Common Factors. In the last 30 years Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija has taught and instructed mathematics at high school, college and university level. She has participated in various teams, in Israel and abroad, whose expertise has been the evaluation of students and staff members. Estimated number of impacted participants: 54 Give the actually state of the program (where the program stands at the date of the activity report, no more than ten lines): Introduction The University of Tel Aviv ran, for the 18th year, its "Summer Youth University". The program is attended each year by exceptional high-school students who have successfully completed grades 10 and 11. Program participants from a lower socioeconomic status, who demonstrate a high potential for excellence in their studies, are identified with the help of high school headmasters from population centres in Israel's social and geographical periphery: religious alongside secular, Jewish alongside Arab, new immigrants alongside veteran inhabitants. The young students live in boarding conditions and return home during weekends. Daily activities last from morning till evening, and include participation in academic courses, study and reinforcement groups, learning skills, reading and writing in English, social and cultural activities etc. -

President Trump's Declaration on Jerusalem: Arab Citizens’ Response and Jewish-Arab Discourse in Israel December 2017 On December 1st, American President Donald Trump allowed a waiver of the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act1 to expire and in so doing, technically recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and set in motion plans enabling the relocation the American Embassy there from its current location in Tel Aviv. A few days later, on December 6th, President Trump formally and publicly recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in a televised announcement and issued a directive to the State Department to begin the embassy move. These actions reverse longstanding American and international precedent regarding Jerusalem,2 as well as convention since 1993 that “the status of Jerusalem is a core issue to be addressed bilaterally in permanent status negotiations” between Israel and the Palestinians.3 Within the context of Arab citizens of Israel and Jewish-Arab relations in the country, the announcements have had a polarizing effect. While the majority of Jewish Israeli political leaders seem to be aligned in support of the actions, Arab political leadership has been vocal in its opposition. Even before the official announcement, MK Ayman Odeh, the Chair of the Joint Arab List, called President Trump "a pyromaniac" and warned that he "will set the entire region ablaze with his madness” if he goes through with it. MK Ahmad Tibi, also from the Joint List, said moving the US embassy “is in violation of international law” and will “seriously damage the vision for two states.”4 For Arab citizens of Israel, the opposition to the moves has a number of different roots. -
