During the last decades, the mechanisms of cell injury caused by cnidarian venoms have been studied utilizing extracts from several Cnidaria that have been tested in order to evaluate some fundamental parameters, such as the activity on cell survival, functioning and metabolism, and to improve the knowledge about the mechanisms of action of these compounds. In agreement with the modern tendency aimed to avoid the utilization of living animals in the experiments and to substitute them with in vitro systems, established cell lines or primary cultures have been employed to test cnidarian extracts or derivatives. Several cnidarian venoms have been found to have cytotoxic properties and have been also shown to cause hemolytic effects. Some studied substances have been shown to affect tumour cells and microorganisms, so making cnidarian extracts particularly interesting for their possible therapeutic employment.

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Hydrozoa of the Mediterranean Sea are well known and a recent monograph covers 457 species. Mediterranean non-Siphonophoran Hydrozoa comprises 398 species, an increasing number due to continuous updates, representing about 10 % of the 3,702 currently valid species reported in a recent world assessment of hydrozoan diversity. Many new records are non indigenous species, previously described species that occurred else- where and whose arrival was presumably caused by human activities. However, many species reported in the past are not recorded in recent times. Realistic assessments of species pools require addition of new species, but also subtraction of species not found since a certain period. With the confidence of extinction index, cases of putative extinction can be raised. Out of the 398 known species, only 162 (41 %) have been reported in the last decade, while 53 (13 %) are not recorded in the literature since at least 41 years. According to the confidence of extinction index, 60 % of the 53 missing species are extinct, and 11 % are putatively extinct from the basin. From a biogeographical point of view, the missing species are: 34 % endemic, 19 % boreal, 15 % Mediterranean-Atlantic, 11 % Indo-Pacific, 11 % circumtropical, 4 % cosmopolitan, 2 % tropical-Atlantic, 4 % non-classifiable. Fluctuations in species composition into a certain area cause heavy var- iability in the expression of both structural and functional biodiversity.

Highest richness of forms occurred in the 400–600 m depth layer in Sagami Bay, while in Toyama Bay richness was low in most layers. New forms continued to occur with increasing depth in Sagami Bay but not in Toyama Bay and species composition differed remarkably between the two bays. Putative second- ary deep-sea gelatinous forms were identified. Horizontal patchiness in normalized abundances was the rule rather than the exception and for accurate calculations of biodiversity indices incor- porating evenness or equitability, the necessity for multiple submersible dives in a single area and survey period was noted. Abstract: This report provides a systematic review of the pelagic Hydrozoa, Siphonophores excluded; diagnoses and keys are given for the different families and genera with a short description of their hydroid stage where known; a list of the world-wide hydromedusae species is established. Key words: Hydrozoa, Automedusae, Hydroidomedusae, systematics, diagnosis A: INTRODUCTION: The hydromedusae are on the whole one of the best known groups of all the Hydrozoa, three great monographs covering the world-wide described species having been dedicated to them, the first by Haeckel (1879-1880), the second by Mayer (1910) and the last by Kramp (1961). A generic revision has been done by Bouillon, 1985, 1995 and several large surveys covering various 47 Thalassia Salentina n. 24/2000 geographical regions have been published in recent times, more particularly, those by Kramp, 1959 the “Atlantic and adjacent waters”, 1968 “Pacific and Indian Ocean”, Arai and Brinckmann-Voss, 1980 “British Columbia and Puget Sound”; Bouillon, 1999 “South Atlantic”; Bouillon and Barnett, 1999 “New- Zealand”; Boero and Bouillon, 1993 and Bouillon et al, (in preparation) “ Mediterranean”; they all largely improved our knowledge about systematics and hydromedusan biodiversity. The present work is a compilation of all the genera and species of hydromedusae known, built up from literature since Kramp’s 1961 synopsis to a few months before publication.

The caldera is hydrothermally active and nourishes a unique chemosynthetic ecosystem, which includes Bathymo- diolus mussel beds and vestimentiferan tubeworms. Sixty-one gelatinous zooplankton morphotaxa were observed (21 ctenophores, 16 siphonophores, 10 hydromedusae, 4 scyphozoans and 10 thaliaceans), and notes on their taxonomy and fine-scale distributional data are presented. The vertical distribution patterns of gelatinous zooplankton clearly dif- fered inside and outside the caldera: three gelatinous zooplankton morphotaxa, the ctenophores Lobata sp. “Boli” and undescribed Lobata “No auricles”, and the hydromedusa Earleria bruuni, were highly abundant inside, but not outside, of the caldera.
