General Overview Mojokerto is one of the districts in East Province, . It is located 40 km southwest of Surabaya, and constitutes one of the regional units of ‘Gerbangkertosusila’ Development (a linkage of towns and city connecting Gresik, Bangkalan, Mojokerto, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, and Lamongan, that are supposed to sustain Surabaya as center of business and industrial activities).

It does not have a Sanitation Working Group and the district also has not joined Settlement Sanitation Development Acceleration Program (Program Percepatan Pembangunan Sanitasi Permukiman/PPSP) yet. The poor sanitation condition was also aggravated by high number of open defecation practices. There are still many community members who defecate on the river. The communal toilets remain inadequate while many individual toilets mostly were not built with proper septic tanks.

In order to increase the poor sanitation of the district, IUWASH then facilitated the establishment of Sanitation Working Group and encouraged the local government in allocating funds to undertake PPSP activities so that Mojokerto District will able to follow PPSP in 2013.
