A SERVICE of HEALING (For Those Suffering Emotional Distress, Grief, Divorce, and Physical Ailments) A SERVICE OF HEALING (For those suffering emotional distress, grief, divorce, and physical ailments) MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Sunday, January 11, 2009 Michelle Riley Jones, Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes God gives many gifts to the church, and one of these gifts is the gift of healing. However, it is not necessary to have a person with a healing gift to do a healing service. James 5:13-16 reminds us the church is called to be a HEALING COMMUNITY: “Is any one of you in trouble? They should pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? They should call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person whole; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Healing Affirmations In healing services, affirmations can provide a new way of looking at ourselves that can A SERVICE OF HEALING - MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES 1 ultimately bring healing to our bodies. Paul admonishes us “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of [our] minds” (Romans 12:2). What we believe affects our attitudes. Our faith can make us whole. The use and repetition of healing words brings changes to our mind, then to our body and spirit. Affirmations can transform our way of seeing ourselves and God’s presence in our lives. Affirmations can be found in: o Romans 12:1-2 o 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 o Philippians 4:8-9 o Philippians 4:19 Healing Scripture and Touch The reading of Scripture helps to activate our faith. As we listen to Scriptures, we awaken to God’s intimate and personal healing word for us. In combination with laying on of hands, reading holy Scriptures becomes “wholly reading.” Some healing Scriptures include: o Acts 5:16 o Jeremiah 30:17 o Isaiah 58:8 Healing Communion Healing Communion reminds us that Christ’s love for us, exhibited through his death on the cross for us, can be life-transforming. It is this love that can bring healing to our body, mind, and spirit. Because of his love, we do not have to sacrifice ourselves in abusive and disempowering life situations. We can face our pain knowing that God is with us and desires that we have a full life. The celebration of communion calls us to claim God’s healing in our lives and embrace his gift of finding wholeness in him. 1. Litany, Responsive Reading, or Invocation (a) Call to Worship Healing for the World O God of all creation, you have fearfully and wonderfully fashioned us and breathed your life into us; from the crown of our heads to the soles of our feet, Lord, Reign. Reign in us, Precious Savior, Reign. As the Great Physician who healed the woman at the well, you are the same Wonder who finds us in the uttermost parts of the world to heal us—mind, spirit, and body. Awesome Healer, rescue and deliver, even now. As the Master Potter and Crafter who takes broken things and mends them back together again, melt us and mold us into the restored children, women, and men that you have destined us to be. Providing Shepherd who charts the path ahead of us, who both precedes and follows us, place your hand of blessing on our heads and shepherd our souls. We find refuge and rest in your care. We bless your Holy Name and we praise you for being the God who heals not only our bodies but also our souls. God is a Wonder. Hallelujah, God reigns! 2. ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer D. M. A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Yvonne Sellers Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Loretta Robinson, Advisor Karen Peeler C. Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent.
