Here the subsoil hides sulfurated, bro- mide and sodium chloride mineral water, which has created large underground reserves of therapeutic peat, and you can find precious sapropel mud in the lakes. Jūrmala is known as a medical resort since the late 18th century, when the research of folk medicines such as hydrogen sulfide springs, peat and sapropel mud allowed to set up the first healing institutions in Ķemeri. Today the treatment institutions of the Jūrmala resorts offer a wide range of healing, reha- bilitation and SPA services, and it is the ideal place for combining leisurely relaxation with healthcare. • The Finnish Sauna
CHAPTER 10 The Finnish Sauna If sauna, tar, or alcohol doesn’t help, you are sick to die. —Finnish adage Finns are reverential about the sauna. In the glow of the softly lit wood-lined space, they chat jovially or fall into a comfortable silence. The heat makes one welcome a dip in ice-cold water or a roll in the snow, as improbable as that sounds. Food and drink afterward never tasted so delicious. There is etiquette which has to do with practical and safety questions, but generous Finns will walk you through it. As is their method of rearing children, it’s a window to the Finnish psyche. —Anonymous Finn (quoted in Kaiser & Perkins, 2005) inland is located between Sweden and Russia on the Baltic Sea and has a pop- ulation of 5.3 million. There are 15.4 people per square kilometer in compari- Fson to 31.7 in the United States. With 2 million saunas in Finland, the sauna density is clearly greater than that of any other country in the world, even if most of the saunas are in the countryside where 70% of the land surrounding 60,000 lakes is forested.Finland also extends beyond mainland Finland into the Archipelago Sea with its 80,000 islands, which include the self-governing, Swedish-speaking Åland Islands province. Throughout Finland both Finnish and Swedish are official languages. However, most mainland Finnish-speaking Finns, who have taken obligatory Swedish courses in school, have only limited competence in that language. The sauna began in the forests as a hole in the ground with hot stones and evolved into a small log cabin. The sauna metaphor is functionally and symbolically related to local and nature-focused values and customs.

  • CONCEPT, WORD, and PLACE Vilja Oja
CONCEPT, WORD, and PLACE Vilja Oja As any verbal expression, be it oral or written, is usually addressed to someone, it has to be understandable to the listener or reader. Therefore it is not at all irrele- vant what terms are chosen to express an idea. As we know, a word as such, i.e. a sequence of speech sounds is void of meaning unless created (and used) by a person to express a concept. Luckily, the seekers of the springs of word creation need not wander into the distant past to witness the origins of human language, however exciting the adventure could be. Living languages are in a constant pro- cess of change and development, during which new concepts constantly keep finding their forms of expression. One of the criteria of viability of a new word, proved by its coming into use is its informative aspect. This means that the new word should better have a familiar ring. There are various ways to achieve that: a new object may first be introduced by a foreign term, but as it becomes familiar the foreign word becomes domesticated as a loan word more or less adapted to the phonetic or orthographic system of the target language (e.g. Internet, inter- jöör 'interior' [< Fr. intérieur]); new words can be produced from familiar stems by means of derivation or compounding (e.g. disainima 'to design' [< loanword + Estonian suffixes]; töötlus 'processing' [< the stem word töö 'work']; katla|maja 'boilerhouse'); a notion may also be brought home by a figurative comparison (e.g. võimete tipp lit.

  • History of the Finnish Sauna and the Nordic Bath
History of the Finnish Sauna and the Nordic Bath www.cyberbohemia.com /Pages/historyofnordic.htm FINNISH SAUNA History of the Nordic Bath ©1997 Mikkel Aaland All Rights Reserved A foreigner's view of the Finns savusauna in 1799. Giuseppe Acerbi, the Italian traveler, is shown peering in on the left. From Sweat, copyright Mikkel Aaland . The Finns go back thousands of years to central Asia when nomadic tribes began their migration eastward and northward, to populate southwestern Russia, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, and finally Suomi, as they call their land. ORIGIN OF THE SAUNA When BC met AD the itinerant Finns were establishing fur trade with Central Europe and gave up their wandering ways. As their numbers increased, they moved inland, turning to the soil for sustenance. Anthropologists know little about the Finns before the Middle Ages; therefore, the origin of the sauna is in question. Have they always had some form of sweat bath? Were they the progenitors of sweat bathing across Europe and Asia? Did they share the idea with American Indians before they crossed the Bering Straits? Most researchers agree that Finns always had some form of sweat bath, as did most peoples around the world. It was the simplest and most efficient way to satisfy people's innate need to keep clean. When the Finns were nomadic, they probably used a portable sweat lodge similar to those carried by the American Indian and still seen among nomadic tribes in central Asia. Once the Finns settled, they may have erected underground sweat houses, forerunners of the savusauna.
