    CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by University of Huddersfield Repository Popular Music and Politics: In, Against and Beyond Identity Jessica Sylvia Winterson A thesis submitted to the University of Huddersfield in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Huddersfield September 2018 Abstract The research establishes radical modes of theorising for an explicitly anti-capitalist musicology able to celebrate music’s enactment of post-capitalist desire and to understand how music helps to ‘make what was previously deemed to be impossible seem attainable’. Adopting a sharp focus on the 1960s to the 1990s this thesis combines popular musicology and autonomist Marxism to argue that music functions as politics in transforming consciousness and shifting domains of acceptability in thought and feeling. Emancipatory politics must destroy the appearance of a ‘natural’ order and the thesis develops perspectives on ‘popular music and politics’ that can account for past struggles against capitalism, demonstrating how and why these struggles are naturalised with the discontinuity they signify necessarily erased or appropriated. Music performs emotional work of political significance such as in the embodiment of hope and confidence necessary for political mobilisation. The capacities of music to articulate the emotions that empower people are deployed here to suggest contradictions contained in, against and beyond identity bear utopian orientation. This statement is developed to ask what it means to counter hegemony and break social cohesion. ‘Insubordination’ forms the macro-arguments of the research. These arguments are around the roles of politics in popular music experience in the translation of mid-twentieth century revolution to capitalist realism and neoliberal modernity.

    MUSIC / NEW MUSIC By STEPHEN HOLDEN Published: September 8, 2014 LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet) (429 Records) From an enfant terrible, once hailed as a new Bob Dylan, to a wary but not too grumpy older man, Loudon Wainwright III, now 68, has stayed the course for well over four decades, charting his life and times with pungent light verses and biting turns of phrase. As a folk singer-songwriter, he has proved that a sharp sense of humor can make for verses more durable than earnest self-examination. You can’t whine about the aging process but you can confront it and soften it with laughter. And on the best songs in “Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet),” his 23rd studio album, he faces impending decrepitude with a smile on his face, buoyed by Zoloft. “Brand New Dance,” which opens the album, is a frantic rockabilly swinger in which he announces a new dance craze “sweeping the land,” where “First you get out of bed, then you attempt to stand.” There’s a silver lining. “But that senior discount that’s my kind of treat/Cause when I get on the bus, you got to gimme a seat.” As the song continues, the point of view widens to embrace an older person’s cynicism on Election Day: “One of them fools is bound to win/But it’s the same old same old all over again.” Mr. Wainwright’s music hasn’t changed significantly. It varies from good-timey folk to spare folk-blues. If his voice has thinned a bit, he still conveys the jovial intimacy of a born storyteller whose public self- mockery exorcises demons.

Singer and songwriter Rufus Wainwright has built a successful career with witty lyrics and rich melodies that have earned him comparisons to Cole Porter and George Gershwin. Wainwright cites Al Jolson, Edith Piaf, and Nina Simone as artists who were among his early inspirations. Both music critics and Wainwright's loyal fans appreciate the structural complexity and lush orchestrations of his works. Described by Advocate reviewer Anderson Jones as "the thinking gay man's sex symbol," Wainwright composes and performs songs marked by intelligence, humor, and pathos. In his rendition, his songs are at once achingly plaintive and hip, their frank romanticism only barely mediated by a light dose of irony. Wainwright comes from a distinctly musical family. His father is American folk-singer and humorist Loudon Wainwright III, and his mother is Canadian folk-singer and songwriter Kate McGarrigle. Born July 22, 1973 in Rhinebeck, New York, Rufus Wainwright grew up in Montreal, where his mother made her home after his parents separated when he was three and subsequently divorced. Music has always been at the center of Wainwright's life. He began learning to play the piano at six and by his early teens was performing on tour with his mother, his aunt Anna McGarrigle, and his sister Martha Wainwright as the McGarrigle Sisters and Family. Wainwright wrote his first song, "I'm A-Runnin'," for the children's film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller (1988, directed by Michael Rubbo), for which his mother and aunt had been engaged to provide the music.

    ARTICLES “Saw You in the Dark”: Exploring Rufus Wainwright’s Emotional Vulnerability in Fan-Captured Live Performance Videos Stephanie Salerno Introduction On December 9, 2010, Canadian-American popular singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performed a solo show at the Egg in Albany, New York. Breaking from his usual popular performance practice that incorporated audience applause, between-song banter, and a set list comprised of old favourites and new tunes, he performed his 2010 album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu as a complete classical song cycle, or a collection of art songs that are thematically connected through harmonic material, melodic motifs, text set to music, mood, or narrative.1 As a strict solo piano/voice song cycle, the Lulu performances were different from his previous tours, largely because of the personal circumstances surrounding the recording and touring of the album. Wainwright’s mother, Québécoise folk-singer Kate McGarrigle, suffered a rare sarcoma in the late 2000s, passing away in January 2010.2 The timing of her illness and the emotional stress of saying goodbye to a loved one profoundly influenced Wainwright’s sixth studio album. This was not only because it was the last completed album his mother would ever hear, but because it became a vehicle through which Wainwright grieved and processed her death. One fan in attendance captured nearly the entire December 9 show on a Flip Video camcorder and uploaded all but two songs of the twelve-song cycle to YouTube via five separate videos. In doing so, this fan and YouTube user granted individuals lacking access or means to see Wainwright and experience the song cycle in person a digital opportunity via a screen and an Internet connection.
