    RBT Colombia: Andean Endemics Trip Report - 2014 1 Colombia Trip Report Andean Endemics 8th to 25th November 2014 (18 days) Flame-winged Parakeet by Clayton Burne Trip report compiled by tour leader: Clayton Burne RBT Colombia: Andean Endemics Trip Report - 2014 2 Our tour of Colombia's Andes kicked off at a typical birding hour - too early! Departing Bogota in the dark, we reached Laguna Pedro Palo just after dawn. Situated some 1000m lower than Bogota on the western slopes of the Eastern Cordillera, Laguna Pedro Palo offers an excellent introduction to many Neotropical species, as well as a few Colombian endemics for good measure. The morning started off with a number of commoner tanagers, a pair of Red-faced Spinetail, Rufous-browed Peppershrike, a dashing Green Hermit, White-vented Plumeleteer and the rather scarce Sooty Grassquit. We continued in this good vein adding the spectacular Blue-naped Chlorophonia, a few North American migrants including Black-and-white and Mourning Warblers as well as a host of good tanagers such as Scrub, Bay-headed, Blue-necked, Beryl-spangled and Black-capped. The morning then kicked into high drama as the major target species of the day, the endemic Black Inca, put in a show. The miniscule Olivaceous Piculet offered excellent views before we had brief, but very close views of a male and female Red-headed Barbet. The darker undergrowth gave up decent views of Moustached and Chestnut-capped Brush Finches, but Rusty-breasted Antpitta and Whiskered Wren were less co-operative, the Black Inca by Clayton Burne trips first 'heard only' birds.

ABSTRACT We conducted an ornithological survey of Páramo de Frontino, the largest páramo in the Western Andes of Colombia and rarely visited by ornithologists. Here we present the fi rst records from this cordillera of Geranoaetus melanoleucus, Hapalopsittaca amazonina, Lurocalis rufi ventris, Grallaria alleni, Myornis senilis, and Notiochelidon fl avipes, as well as Uropsalis segmentata, Acestrura mulsant, and Leptopogon rufi pectus. The latter three had been previously recorded from southern Antioquia, but had remained unpublished. We also obtained signifi cant latitudinal range extensions for 23 species and altitudinal extensions of 300 m or more are given for 26 species. The avian biogeography of the cordillera is discussed and an annotated list given of the species recorded during the survey. Sanchez Cotinga 11 (1999): 55–63 Relevamientos efectuados entre julio y septiembre de 1997 registraron un total de 140 especies de aves en los hábitats de límite de bosque nublado, el páramo adyacente y sectores de granjas de la Reserva Biológica Guandera, Carchi, nordeste de Ecuador. Se presenta una lista de especies con datos básicos de hábitat y abundancia en base a cantidad de observaciones por día. Varias especies raras y amenazadas endémicas de los Andes fueron registradas en buenos números en el área. La avifauna de Guandera resultó ser bastante similar a la del área de hábitat similar más próxima que ha sido relevada, el Cerro Mongus, pero el 26% de la lista total de especies difería. Introduction The Andes of South America contain several key areas of bird endemism5,6,20. Two Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs) are the montane cloud forests of the north-central Andes and the montane grassland and transitional elfin forest of the central Andean páramo20,22. The north-central Andes contain at least eight restricted-range or endemic species, and the central Andean páramo at least 10 species20,22. These Endemic Bird Areas have been subject to widespread and severe deforestation in the current and recent centuries; the transitional areas between the cloud forest and páramo are threatened by frequent burning, grazing and conversion to agriculture such as potato cultivation6,7,22.

And now, after a near two- decade period of unrest lasting until the very early 2000s, a young generation of Colombian birders, of which there are many, are discovering new birding locations, adding new species to the country list, already the largest in the world, organizing bird fairs, exchanging photos on Facebook, and contributing in many ways to the advancement of ornithology and environmental education in their country. And, it is in many cases, due to them that we have access to so many wonderful birding sites on tours like this one.” This year our first outing was to a site near Cali where a collection of hummingbird and fruit feeders attracted a parade of incredibly colorful birds. It was so pleasant here, in fact, that we stayed all day. The following day we made our first foray into the Río Anchicayá Valley, exploring several higher elevation sites including Señora Dora’s “El Descanso” restaurant complete with bird feeders and yet more new tanagers and hummingbirds.

No other country holds more species than Colombia, and we had the chance to see some of the most spectacular birds in this part of the world and finished the tour with most of the Neotropical families well represented on our list. This first Colombia tour of the year was rather easy for a group of very enthusiastic birders who contemplated the birds, became familiar with them, and admired their natural behavior in a more relaxed pace than usual. We did not get as large a list total as on some previous trips, but we had fun from beginning to end and learned a lot about the distribution of species in one of the countries with the most complex geography in the Americas. Our trip started in Cali, where the group arrived on different flights, and the participants were transferred to our comfortable hotel in town. The following morning we left Cali and drove to the famous Km 18 on the Cali-Buenaventura Road. Here we visited the by now famous Finca Alejandria, where we had an amazing start with species such as the endemic Colombian Chachalaca, Golden-headed Quetzal, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, and Squirrel Cuckoo around the gardens.

  • Ecuador: Avian Jewels of the Northwest Andes
    ECUADOR: AVIAN JEWELS OF THE NORTHWEST ANDES NOVEMBER 10-19, 2020 ©2020 Ecuador’s spectacular Chocó-Andean bioregion offers extraordinary biodiversity and unsurpassed endemism along with the greatest hummingbird and antpitta shows on earth. This jam-packed, weeklong adventure covers a relatively tiny natural corridor that runs from high-elevation elfin Andean woodland to remnant wet lowland jungle along the Pacific coastal plain while based at a single birding lodge! Ecuador may well be the epicenter of Neotropical bird diversity, and perhaps no other destination expresses this better than the western slopes of Volcán Pichincha. This region stretches for only some 50 miles to the west of the country’s charming capital city, Quito, and holds a phenomenal array of bird species. We will base our “operations” out of Séptimo Paraíso Cloud Forest Reserve in the renowned Mindo Valley and visit a variety of nearby bird sanctuaries, nature reserves and birding hotspots in search of the local avian specialties found here. Breathtaking dawn vistas greet us on our first morning as we climb over the slopes of the inter- Andean plateau and wind our way up to Yanacocha Reserve. Here—where hummingbirds represent a truly major element of this stunted, moss and epiphyte-covered wonderland—we will search for high-Andean mixed foraging flocks and marvel at the wing-whirr of up to twelve species of these feathered jewels, including the unimaginable Sword-bill! We’ll then continue birding onward and constantly down-slope through temperate and subtropical mountain-forest along Ecuador’s first “Ecoroute,” a pioneer community-based conservation project that has converted a 54-kilometer country road into a protected sustainable bird-tourism zone, to finally arrive at our destination and “headquarters” for the week.

    Tropical Birding Trip Report Southern ECUADOR: Nov-Dec 2019 (custom tour) Southern Ecuador 18th November – 6th December 2019 Hummingbirds were a big feature of this tour; with 58 hummingbird species seen, that included some very rare, restricted range species, like this Blue-throated Hillstar. This critically-endangered species was only described in 2018, following its discovery a year before that, and is currently estimated to number only 150 individuals. This male was seen multiple times during an afternoon at this beautiful, high Andean location, and was widely voted by participants as one of the overall highlights of the tour (Sam Woods). To illustrate this, we managed to record just over 600 bird species on this trip (601) of less than three weeks, including over 80 specialties. This private group had a wide variety of travel experience among them; some had not been to South America at all, and ended up with hundreds of new birds, others had covered northern Ecuador before, but still walked away with 120 lifebirds, and others who’d covered both northern Ecuador and northern Peru, (directly either side of the region covered on this tour), still had nearly 90 new birds, making this a profitable tour for both “veterans” and “South American Virgins” alike.
