COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES COM(82)385 final Brussels . 1 July 1982 INITIAL GUIDELINES FOR A COMMUNITY POLICY ON TOURISM ( Communication from the Commission to the Council ) 1 I V' : M COM (82 ) 385 final /• T ?/rS OP THE COWlralCAÏIOÎJ The Commission is sending a communication to the Council on tourism because it has observed the extraordinary expansion of tourist activity in the Community and the interrelationship between tourism and a large number of Community activities . It therefore felt it useful to emphasize the importance of tourism to the Community and consider how it relates to other Community activities . These two aims are elaborated in the study "The European Community and Tourism " annexed to this communication . The paper reveals the areas in which Community action is likely to stimulate the harmonious development of tourism within the Community and indicates to the Council which of the proposals now before it would , when adopted , promote the development of tourism in the Community or improve the conditions in which those involved in the tourist industry tvork . Finally the Commission seeks . to identify the priority areas in which action by the Community , either in addition to or as a means of coordinating wha,t is done at national level , could help solve some of the problems of tourism in the Community . I. THE IMPORTANCE OP TOURISM TO THE COMMUNITY Article 2 of the Treaty of Rome assigns to the European Community the task of promoting closer relations between the States which belong to it . Tourism can assist the Community to achieve this goal and , by cringing the peoples of Europe into contact , it buttresses the edifice of European integration . Tourism is also an important economic activity in the spirit of Article 2 of the Treaty . It provides jobs for 4 million people in the Community and its indirect effect on employment is considerably greater . It contributes to balance of payments stability between - 2 - the northern European countries ana xhose of the south and assists in the development of the poorest regions of the Community . Spaoial attention should therefore he paid to promoting its harmonious development throughout the Community . A further measure of the importance of tourism to the Community is the large number of Community policies which , directly or indirectly , have a bearing on it . These range from the free movement of persons and the freedom to provide tourist services , through passenger transport to regional development and the protection of the environment . To give further stimulation to tourism within the Community , a " tourist dimension" should be given to these so that the needs of tourism are taken into account when decisions are taken and ι Community actions implemented . The following headings show the areas in which tourism can be taken into account . II . FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND THE PROTECTION OF TOURISTS A number of measures help to encourage tourism within the Community by making it easier for tourists to cross frontiers and stay in other Member States . 1 . Easing of customs checks With the abolition of customs duties within the European Community the nramber of checks has been reduced and it is therefore easier for all Community citizens , including tourists , to cross internal frontiers . However ,, since VAT rates differ between the Member States , random checks en the goods imported by travellers are carried out at frontiers . The system of "duty–free allowances " allows goods to be imported up to certain limits fixed by the Council . KO EKING CONDITIOITS FOR THOSE ENGAGED IN TOURISM The European Community has "brought about a common market in tourist services by permitting freedom of establishment for economic operators and by enabling them to provide services in any Member State . It can further improve conditions for those working in tourism by taking action in the following areas . 1 . The ripht of establishment and freedom to provide tourist services These two rights , which are guaranteed by the EEC Treaty , are important to an international activity such as tourism. The principle of regarding other Community citizens as on the some footing, as those of the host country is generally recognized. But the existence of varying national rules on the conditions of access to a tourist profession may form a barrier to freedom of establishment and the freedom to provide services .

Industry executives can use this study to inform their company strategies, as well as to educate non-semiconductor partners, including policy makers, on the nature of their business to promote a better understanding of the important role semiconductors play in everyday life and on the globe-spanning ecosystem that’s needed to produce them.

    NRDC: Better Viewing, Real Savings, and Less Pollution - Improving the Efficiency of Television Set-Top Boxes (PDF) Energy Facts Better Viewing, Lower Energy Bills, and Less Pollution: Improving the Efficiency of Television Set-Top Boxes More than 80 percent of U.S. homes subscribe to some form of pay television service. Transforming those signals into shows, movies, and sports on the screen currently depends on approximately 160 million set-top boxes, nearly all of which are owned and installed by the cable, satellite, phone, or other service provider. NRDC and Ecos partnered to better understand how much energy these devices use and what energy savings opportunities exist. What we found was startling: In 2010, set-top boxes in the United States consumed approximately 27 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is equivalent to the annual output of nine average (500 MW) coal-fired power plants. The electricity required to operate all U.S. boxes is equal to the annual household electricity consumption of the entire state of Maryland, results in 16 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and costs households more than $3 billion each year. Fortunately, there is great potential for improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of operating these electronics relied upon by so many viewers. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. This work revolves around the previous idea, going through countries that have benefited from film-induced tourism –from the USA to the UK, without forgetting New Zealand. After explaining new emerging forms of marketing related to this kind of tourism (place branding), we end up analyzing the past and current situation of shootings in Spain, and more specifically, in the Canary Islands. Globalization is essentially a process by which an ever tightening network of ties that cut across national political boundaries connects communities in a single, interdependent whole, a shrinking world where local differences are steadily eroded and subsumed within a massive global social order (Mowforth and Munt, 1998: 12). Specifically, ATSC is working to coordinate television standards among different communications media focusing on digital television, interactive systems, and broadband multimedia communications.     Influence of television commercials on clothing in India Barbara Mitra In this article I aim to show that there are some major changes in India because of television regarding clothing. Whilst there is cultural fusion of Indian and western style clothing, this fusion is happening in different ways for different groups. Status in clothing (Campbell 49) is also reflecting other divides. The way that people respond to what they see on television commercials may depend on their gender, age, class or whether they live in a rural or urban context. The research is based on a ten year project which began with in-depth ethnography conducted in India. Most of the research was conducted in the North East of India, though some was conducted in Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore. The ethnography included living with Indian families for long periods of time (ranging from six weeks to six months). Other research methods were also used including questionnaires, interviews and focus discussion groups. Television commercials are having an influence in India and this is clearly seen and noted by those living amongst the changes. Clothing is one visual representation of this. For example, Chake from Malthi village noted that fashion had changed in his village, along with people’s attitudes and he believed that this was mainly due to the influence of television commercials. ‘Television commercials have a great influence on rural culture. Earlier people used to live in a different manner but seeing all these programmes and advertisements people have changed their attitudes. People have changed the way they dress, their hairstyles and attitudes.’ One way that these changes are occurring is by mixing Indian and western style of clothing.
