Navigating Jazz: Music, Place, and New Orleans by Sarah Ezekiel Suhadolnik A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Musicology) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Charles Hiroshi Garrett, Chair Professor David Ake, University of Miami Associate Professor Stephen Berrey Associate Professor Christi-Anne Castro Associate Professor Mark Clague © Sarah Ezekiel Suhadolnik 2016 DEDICATION To Jarvis P. Chuckles, an amalgamation of all those who made this project possible. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My dissertation was made possible by fellowship support conferred by the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, as well as ample teaching opportunities provided by the Musicology Department and the Residential College. I am also grateful to my department, Rackham, the Institute, and the UM Sweetland Writing Center for supporting my work through various travel, research, and writing grants. This additional support financed much of the archival research for this project, provided for several national and international conference presentations, and allowed me to participate in the 2015 Rackham/Sweetland Writing Center Summer Dissertation Writing Institute. I also remain indebted to all those who helped me reach this point, including my supervisors at the Hatcher Graduate Library, the Music Library, the Children’s Center, and the Music of the United States of America Critical Edition Series. I thank them for their patience, assistance, and support at a critical moment in my graduate career. This project could not have been completed without the assistance of Bruce Boyd Raeburn and his staff at Tulane University’s William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive of New Orleans Jazz, and the staff of the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Motorcoach Tours plus Charters, Fly-Packages & Cruises WE WELCOME YOU BACK FOR THE 2021 TOUR SEASON A lot has happened since our last tour book. As those of you who receive our E-Mail Blasts or regularly check our web site are already aware, Great Day! Tours has not been “sitting idle”, as we gradually brought back our tours for those wanting to travel, starting last June and, by July, our annual tour to Mount Rushmore showed that there was much “pent-up” demand for travel. During September we introduced a dozen tours and most sold out within days. This 2021 Tour Book has more tours to choose from than ever before. A quote from St. Augustine, the fourth-century theologian, said, “The world is a book, and • Traveling can change a person “physically and psychologically” while improving health. These experiences can lead to great new memories. • Travel does not have to be overly expensive and can reduce anxiety and depression when you separate yourself from daily routines. Various steps have evolved to adapt to the changing needs for safe travel. At the time of publication, masks are worn when boarding and de-boarding and no one is to travel if not feeling well.

The first half of this proposition is specific to New Orleans: I note that the city has become largely identified with African American musical practices and repertoires and, further, that the associations between music, race, and place can be adequately subsumed under the categorical term New Orleans Music.

  • Harry Connick, Jr
News Release For immediate distribution Harry Connick, Jr. Prizewinner of the 2007 Ella Fitzgerald Award Montreal, Friday, June 29, 2007 – The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is proud to announce the awarding of the 2007 Ella Fitzgerald Award to internationally renowned singer Harry Connick, Jr. He will be given the award at a press briefing to be held this afternoon at 1:00 p.m., at the Salon Mont-Royal in the Hyatt Regency Montréal. He will also be presented with his trophy on stage at his concert tomorrow, Saturday, June 30, at 8 p.m. in the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts as part of the Pleins feux General Motors series. Harry Connick, Jr. is the ninth recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Award, created in 1999 for the 20th anniversary of the Festival. The prize is awarded to jazz singers whose improvisational skills, originality and uniqueness of voice have been universally praised on the international scene. As a child of New Orleans, it’s no surprise that Harry Connick, Jr., has music in his blood. At the early age of 10, he was already playing piano with a local jazz orchestra, and then in clubs in the French quarter. Countless piano awards later—at the ripe age of 19—already very franksinatresque in style, he released his first album on the Columbia label. But Connick also has close ties with the film world: as an actor, obviously, but also as a singer and composer. This talented crooner and pianist carries Louisiana in his heart and soul, notably in his two recent albums entitled Oh, My Nola and Chanson du Vieux Carré.

A FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE ON NEW ORLEANS JAZZWOMEN Sherrie Tucker Principal Investigator Submitted by Center for Research University of Kansas 2385 Irving Hill Road Lawrence, KS 66045-7563 September 30, 2004 In Partial Fulfillment of #P5705010381 Submitted to New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park National Park Service 419 Rue Decatur New Orleans, LA 70130 This is a study of women in New Orleans jazz, contracted by the National Park Service, completed between 2001 and 2004. Women have participated in numerous ways, and in a variety of complex cultural contexts, throughout the history of jazz in New Orleans. While we do see traces of women’s participation in extant New Orleans jazz histories, we seldom see women presented as central to jazz culture. Therefore, they tend to appear to occupy minor or supporting roles, if they appear at all. This Research Study uses a feminist perspective to increase our knowledge of women and gender in New Orleans jazz history, roughly between 1880 and 1980, with an emphasis on the earlier years.
