Box 1568, Orleans, MA 02653 1-800-451-5006 www.paracletepress.com Dr. Lindsay Arthur Lafford Dr. Lindsay Arthur Lafford, Professor Emeritus, was born in Gloucester, England, in 1912 and served as chorister in Hereford Cathedral from 1922 to 1929. He then became an organ scholar there and assistant of Sir Percy Hull, D. Mus., until 1935. In that year he left England to assume the positions of Organist and Choirmaster of St. John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong, and conductor of the HK Philharmonic and Chorus. In 1939 he was invited to the U.S.A. to teach at Haverford, Swarthmore, and Bryn Mawr Colleges, serving also as University Organist and Director of Music in the Chapel at Princeton. Following service in the United States Navy during World War II, Lafford was a member of the faculties of several colleges and universities —and organist of St. John’s Cathedral, Jacksonville, Florida—until retiring from the University of Miami in 1994. His extensive conducting career has included eight significant premières of works by Harold Darke, Gordon Jacob, Sir George Dyson, Gustav Holst, and Sir Edward Elgar (“Coronation Ode”). In 1954 he conducted the American première of Vaughan Williams’ Hodie, the composer’s last choral composition. He holds the degree Doctoris in Litteris Humanoribus and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (plus the Choirmaster’s Diploma), a Fellow of Trinity College, London, and of the American Guild of Organists, and a Diplomate of both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. He is the current Lord of the Manor of Ridley, Northumberland, England,COPY a Title created by King Henry III in the year 1230. Lafford has held the Title since 1998, when it passed to him from the family of the late Queen Mother Elizabeth, of England. Program Note This work is, in a sense, autobiographical. I was born in Gloucester, England, and my ancestors came from that pre-Roman part of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire that embraces Stonehenge and even earlier Avebury. In the first two movements, I’ve tried to NOTreflect this ancient heritage. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in the village of Down Ampney in that same area, and direct forbears of mine came from a hamlet scarcely more than a mile distant. I’ve paid homage to this in the third movement by quoting Vaughan Williams’s hymn tune “Down Ampney,” tied in with a Welsh folk tune to acknowledge the part of my ancestry emanating from Wales. Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester, a scant twenty-eight miles from Gloucester, and lived for a time in Hereford where my mentor for thirteen years at the Cathedral, Sir Percy Hull, was a longtime friend of the composer. I experiencedDO the honor of performing music of both Elgar and Vaughan Williams under their own direction, and, in fact, conducted the American première of the latter’s last choral composition.     The Elgar Society JOURNAL JULY 1999 Vol.11 No.2 ELGAR’S TE DEUM & BENEDICTUS John Winter [Dr Winter is Senior Lecturer at Trinity College of Music, London. He is a general freelance musician, and holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia on contemporary church music.] There is arguably no better way to understand a piece of music than to rehearse it thoroughly before performing it. When this rehearsal involves work with an amateur choir the learning process is even greater. This has recently been my experience with Elgar’s Te Deum and Benedictus, and Give unto the Lord, working with a non-auditioned, all-ability choir, teaching virtually every note and explaining every subtlety of rubato. My appreciation of these works’ structure is all the greater for this preparation. Elgar’s liturgical music rarely gets a good press. There is barely a reference, and that a derogatory one, in New Grove. At best it gets mentioned in passing; at worst it is derided under the label of Victorian triumphalism. Worst of all, apart from Ave verum corpus, it is rarely performed. The Te Deum and Benedictus in F, Op 34, dates from 1897, and thus comes not only at the climax of Elgar’s ‘formative’ period, but also at the height of his ‘imperialist’ style. Op 32 was the Imperial March, his first major commission for a London audience, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Op 33 was The Banner of St George, and Op 35, Caractacus. John Allison’s book, Edward Elgar : Sacred Music,1 is exceptional in giving due consideration to the lesser-known works and incomplete fragments, along with valuable background to this particular work.

He then became an organ scholar there and assistant of Sir Percy Hull, D. Mus., until 1935. In that year he left England to assume the positions of Organist and Choirmaster of St. John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong, and conductor of the HK Philharmonic and Chorus. In 1939 he was invited to the U.S.A. to teach at Haverford, Swarthmore, and Bryn Mawr Colleges, serving also as University Organist and Director of Music in the Chapel at Princeton. Following service in the United States Navy during World War II, Lafford was a member of the faculties of several colleges and universities – and organist of St.

    OlD HeReFORDiians’’ Club newsletteR 2015 President’s Report 2015 From the Development Office: Look forward, Look back, Remember and Dream. Never has an aspiration seemed more appropriate to the work we do supporting the OH Club and the School than in this last year. We have looked forward with excitement and celebrated outstanding successes, especially musically, with wins at national level for our Junior School Choir and Cantabile Girls’ Choir. The School has also received a commendation in the Education Business Awards for its music provision for our pupils and across Herefordshire. We have looked back and remembered former pupils’ contributions to the Military through the dedication of a memorial plaque in Ypres, a tree in front of No.1 and the OH Club has purchased 70 poppies from the Tower of London (one for each of our fallen in WW1) as a permanent commemoration.
