Thar be pyrates! English pirates from C15th to C17th Q: Why were the pirates in lockdown? [answer at the end in Sources] Ever since merchants began sailing the seas, there have been those eager to rob them of their merchandise. The true nature of piracy was theft on the high seas, often hand-in-glove with violence. Boarding another ship at sea usually involved bloodshed and sometimes, in the murder or selling into slavery of the survivors. Often, only a few- those worth a ransom - survived. It was a grim, dirty business. Not all pirates went to sea. Others were the financers, the providers of ships and safe havens, and the fences who dispersed and sold the stolen goods. Pirates at sea were the cutting edge of organised crime networks, while the great and the good of society turned a blind eye – or even supported their activities. From the Roman era to the 19th century, piracy was common in the busy English Channel. Coastal towns were on a frontier, the lawless sea, where norms of behaviour did not apply. Those towns bred tough merchants and ships’ crews who were ready to defend themselves against pirates, or to prey on others if the opportunity arose. It was dog eat dog. In the late 3rd century, Saxon and Frankish pirates operated in the Channel, and a Roman fleet commanded by Carausius was active in seeking them out in their lairs in the labyrinthine Rhine estuary. Vikings are famous for piracy and raiding. The most famous real-life pirates roamed the seas during the so-called ‘Golden Age of Piracy’. -

Gretchen: Hello and welcome to History is Gay, a podcast that examines the underappreciated and overlooked queer ladies, gents, and gentle-enbies that have always been there in the unexplored corners of history. Because history has never been as straight as you think. [Theme music plays] Gretchen: My name is Gretchen and here with me, and my fellow co-host, is Leigh. Leigh: Hello! Gretchen: In this episode, the first episode of our podcast, we are going to be talking about... [sing-song voice] queer pirates. Leigh: Queer pirates! Arrrrr. Yes. We've been really excited about bringing this up. I'm very excited to get into some of these people. Gretchen: I know, they're awesome. Leigh: Yeah, so the way this goes is, we're going to introduce you to some people from history that we think are really awesome. We're going to start out with a brief bio of each of those people, and then we'll kind of transition into a discussion about evidence that they may not have been quite as straight as some people would assume. And then we'll end the podcast with kind of a “how gay were they?”, our personal rankings and how likely it is that they weren't straight. Sound good? Yeah. Gretchen: Great. Leigh: Cool. All right. Year 2 Timetable 24th April March 2020 Reading Mission: Children to read or support them to read this short text: 30 minutes Female Pirates: Many years ago, women were not allowed on ships as they were considered to bring bad luck and a stormy night of sailing. However, some women went against these rules and wanted to become pirates. These pirate women would often disguise themselves as men by cutting their hair short, wearing men’s clothes or covering their face with bandanas. Two famous female pirates were called Anne Bonny and Mary Read. These two women dressed up as men and fought as pirates fiercely and fearlessly. In November 1720, the ship that Anne and Mary were on was captured by a pirate hunter called Captain Jonathon Barnet. These two women were the only people onboard who were brave enough to fight against the enemy, although, sadly, they were outnumbered and did not win the battle. After they can answer these questions, these can be verbal answers or they could be written down or typed. Children could even draw their responses. Suggested answers are in italics. Is this a fiction or non-fiction text? How do you know? This is a non-fiction text as it is recalling facts about the past. Why were female pirates not allowed on ships? People believed that they were bad luck and would bring a stormy night of sailing. What does disguise mean? Disguise means changing your appearance or changing what you look like. How did they disguise themselves to get on the ships? They would cut their hair short, wear men’s clothes or cover their face with bandanas.
