His father was a plumber and his mother was an accomplished pianist. His career began when he was promoted from a office boy to a rehearsal pianist at the Boston Opera House. As his desire was to write and perform “popular” music, he left the job in 1917 to become a pianist and song plugger in Boston with the Irving Berlin publishing company. In 1921, he moved to New York after getting married and started working for Jack Mills Inc. where he published his first song, Emaline.

August 11, 1915; d. July 2, 2006) was born in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; he was also elected to the academic honors society Phi Beta Kappa. In 1941, he moved to Washington, DC, to work in the Army Ordnance Division of the War Department as a research analyst. He left that position in 1954 to restore a house he purchased in Georgetown. Subsequently, in 1956, he joined the National Automobile Dealers Association as a research analyst and worked there until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid musician and concert-goer: he was a talented pianist, and he composed music throughout his life.

To define a genre is to identify a constellation of elements that when brought together in a certain way create a unique entity. A genre is not just a checklist of individual features; it is a conglomeration of interdependent features, both situational and substantive, that make up an artifact’s identity. These interdependent features are brought together by an organizing principle that defines a genre. This course examines the musical genre to identify that organizing principle. In particular, you will be watching films, reading texts, engaging in class discussions, and writing papers about musicals produced at the studio, M-G-M, during Hollywood's golden era. MGM was famous for its lavish spectacles and especially its musicals. Most of its best musicals were in turn made by their production unit, the Arthur Freed unit. Freed was a producer who gathered top talent to efficiently churn out some of the best musicals in film history. We will look at the musical as a genre within the context of the history and films of the Arthur Freed unit at MGM.

Since its beginnings in minstrelsy, vaudeville, and comic operetta, this hybrid mass cultural form has been asking that question by grappling with race, gender, and immigration in the United States and beyond. This course follows up with the question: how do musicals discursively and materially construct the United States? That is, on the one hand, what can we learn from the plots of these musicals, filled with state building, tales of diaspora, and interracial love stories? And on the other hand, what can we learn from the means of their production: how to find 150 Asian-American extras in LA, how to match the perfect face with the perfect voice, and how to turn Margarita Cansino into All- American bombshell Rita Hayworth? These approaches intersect and are in conversation; however, each calls upon the strength of a different field. In this course we will challenge our students to interrogate these familiar films, to dwell in the trouble of mass culture’s repressions, appropriations, and utopian imaginaries, but also to figure why it is so easy to mindlessly hum those tunes.

AND FOREVER Abstract approved: )~.~ Beginning in 1883 and for nearly three-quarters of a century, Harvey Girls worked as waitresses in the chain of Fred Harvey eating houses that operated along the Santa Fe Railroad. Billed at the height of its fame as "the greatest civilizing force of our generation," Harvey's operation ranked a step above the average in dining experience and 'level of service. As the chief representatives and ultimate product of the Harvey system, the Harvey Girls functioned as front line service agents with responsibility for upholding and reinforcing the pUblic image of wholesome goodness with which the Fred Harvey Company identified. The Harvey system's reliance on the Harvey Girl image exacted some costs. For Harvey Girls, this meant a loss of personal identity as they subsumed their own individuality to the corporate image, offering up on the altar of conformity those parts of themselves not compatible with the pUblic's conditioned expectations. The ideal Harvey Girl persona existed in a kind of comforting stasis, despite time or social reality. Simply put, a Harvey Girl is a Harvey Girl, now, then, and forever. .. The goal of this paper is to explore how these women fit into the larger world and the degree to which they were individually exceptional or typical in their role as working women, in the process providing the legacy of the Harvey Girl mystique with some measure of substance.
