Am I imagining things, or is my cookie crawling?
Approaching Flushing High from the gar dens, we observe its Gothic architecture in full glory. The gardens, filled with Rose of Sharon, pink Dogwood, and people accent the building's other-worldly appearance. OUf courtyard, with its red tile surface, and a chortling Quasimodo watching from the main entrance, is an ideal spot for meeting friends and enemies, for dislodging pebbles from one's shoes, and for discovering much-needed small change. In fact, one member of this yearbook's Literary Staff, after a brief search, managed to pick up three cenrs and a fairly good bobbypin. Direct from checkerboard square!

Mathematics is a language spoken by peo ple of all the nations of the world. It is the basis of the pranical and esthetic sciences with which we rule OUf lives. Statting with ninth-year math, and becom ing progressively more involved, Flushing's math curriculum is well-rounded. The student who rna jars in math starts with basic required courses and works his way up to specialized math electives such as solid geometry, Of course, most students see math as merely aoorher diffi· cult subject. Thus, the following explanation of two of Flushing's math courses is geared to practicaliry. Geometry is an elusive structure composed of axioms, postulates, and proofs, all supported by a foundation of completely understandable geometric figures. The geometry student is required to make various broad generalizations about such figures after being handed certain seamy information about them, such as their relation to his uncle, whether they're square or obtuse, ... All of these deductions seem completely irrelevant when one reminds himself that all these facts pertain to a bunch of lines,

Geometry appeals to the eye, wheteas alge bra appeals to the imagination. Here is a typical problem: If A were 2X-Y, eight years ago, and B will be Y years old when the Cleve land Indians win the WorJd.Series, how old will A's married sister be at that time? There are also courses such as advanced algebra and solid geometry which we are not qualified to covet, owing to the limitations of ( space and official censorship, and also to the fact that we have been too spineless to take them.

In Septembet, 1963, the political scene in Flushing High School temained static. Thete were twO parties, Silvet-Blue and Gteen and White, each having similar party platforms. In early November of the same year, a most un usual series of events occurred which tended to rearrange things. First, a new parry, called Red, White and Blue, was formed; then the two established parries metged to form Green and Blue. On the eve of the G.O. elections, thete wete twO political parries, still having nearly identical platforms. However, the election cam paign has been more spirited than usual. The halls wete lined with postets, the floots littered If they raid, they'll come fcom the balcony. with election pamphlets, and the classrooms Tbem bunters just got me! filled with parrisans sporring buttons of theit candidates. The tallies follow an "All-American" theme this year, with Gteen and Blue costumed as students of the nineteen-twenties, and Red, White and Blue assuming the aspect of Uncle Sam. There is no foolproof way to gauge the effectiveness of a rally or to predict the outcome of an election. However, there is one thing which can be deduced from the coutse of this yeat's election campaign: The fact that student interest in political matters has been revived. GREEN AND BLUE FirJt row: M.
