  • The Teachings of Surak
    The Teachings of Surak Translated from the original Vulcan by Gregory Hoover The understanding of many great things has been revealed to us through logic. Concerning these things, Surak should always be remembered. For it is necessary, not only for Vulcans, but even for outsiders, to be competent, both in speaking and in writing, so as to become wise. The wise Surak, after he gave himself fully to a diligent study of logic, also chose to teach, so that those who desire to learn logic and to become skillful in these things would be more and more attentive in mind, and would be strengthened to live according to the principles of logic. And so, I encourage you to approach with understanding, and to perform the reading with attentive study, and to be patient in these things when we may seem, while pursuing the image of logic, to fall short in the translation of the words of Surak; for Vulcan words lose layers of meaning when they are translated into English. And not only these words, but also the principles of logic itself, and of all the sages, have no small difference from when they have been spoken in their own language. While spending many years on the planet Vulcan as a Starfleet Chaplain, I learned a great deal from the followers of Surak. I have tried to translate the ancient teachings faithfully, but often the nearest English words simply did not carry the same “feeling” as the original. The Teachings of Surak was originally translated into English by Skon, father of Sarek, forefather of Spock.[1] Nevertheless, words and meanings change over times, and I considered it to be both good and necessary for me to apply some significant diligence and labor in order to translate the Teachings of Surak into Federation Standard English.

  • ROMULAN HISTORICAL TIMELINE ======By Richard E
    ROMULAN HISTORICAL TIMELINE =========================== by Richard E. Mandel version 1.0 xx.xx.2010 NOTES: "AS" stands for Diane Duane's "After Settlement" Romulan calendar from THE ROMULAN WAY. This is tied to the arrival of the Departed fleet in the Romii (128 Trianguli) star system, and is provided for convienence. THE ROMULAN WAY also gives Vulcan dates, based on the fan-derived calendar inspired by TAS "Yesteryear," for the early events in Romulan pre-history. These are not included in this document. Also, discrepancies between the Romulan and Gregorian calendars (length of year, month, etc.) are as a rule ignored unless they are significant for a given entry, per common fandom practice. ôGCö stands for Terran Gregorian Calendar year as commonly used by most human cultures within the Federation. "cXXXX" stands for "circa XXXX" (approximate date) Reference materials take latest-printed precedence in the followng order: on screen, canon, semi-canon (not canon but referenced on screen), licensed, and fanon. This timeline does not quote fanon sources unless the material in question cannot be found in any "real" source. In cases of conflict, though, I tend to go with what to me seems to be the most consistent material in terms of this work as a whole. Fanon material is not considered in cases of conflict due to its non-official status. Licensed material always has weight over fanon, as Paramount actually gave permission for its creation (even though, in the strictest sense, it is not canon). I for one don't give a flip about the whole canon/fanon argument but there are those that DO; hence my approach.

  • Spock Must Be Spared This! He Turned Hast Ily to the Next Transporter Position and Took Spock by the Arm
    CHAPTER I Dr. McCoy had one thought in his mind: Spock must be spared this! He turned hast ily to the next transporter position and took Spock by the arm. The Vulcan did not even protest as McCoy led him off the platform. McCoy wanted to steer him through the corridors of the Enterprise, hustle him to the haven of Sickbay--anything but let the Vulcan stay and see the security men bringing up the stretcher with the bodybag. But Spock stopped at the transporter console. He planted himself like a rock wit h that immovable Vulcan strength, and now his peculiar immobility amounted almos t to catatonia. "Energize," Spock said, in a shockingly normal voice. Scotty stood at the control console himself. He looked blasted, empty, suddenly old. His shoulders struggled to hold themselves at attention, as if they were an honor guard. His hands worked the controls with special care... as if it could matter now. Uhura stood inside the door, neither explaining her presence nor apologizing for the tears which ran quietly down the beautiful dark face. The transporter shimmered. The two Enterprise security men materialized, took a firmer grip on the anti-gra v lifts, and stepped carefully off the platform with the stretcher that bore the body of Captain James T. Kirk. Spock followed them through the door, his eyes not moving from the stretcher. Mc Coy clung to his arm, not sure whether he was giving support or getting it He co uld feel the Vulcan's strength. But was it fully sane?
