DRAMA WINTER HIGHLIGHTS 2004 ENGLAND EXPECTS Steven Mackintosh stars in a hard-hitting drama about a man who is drawn back to his far right past as his life spirals out of control. Mackintosh plays Ray, a responsible family man, fiercely protective of his daughter, Nikki. But he is also a control freak and, when things start to go wrong – first at work and then at home – he begins to lose his grip on reality. As his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and he looks for someone other than himself to blame, he turns towards people from his past – people who are prepared to exploit him for their own ends. England Expects is produced by award-winning programme-maker Ruth Caleb. Her BBC ONE credits include Dominic Savage's Out Of Control, which won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Antonia Bird's Care, which won the Prix Italia for Best Drama. Impact case study (REF3b) Institution: University of Strathclyde Unit of Assessment: 30 Title of case study: Cultural, Creative and Economic Benefits of the Edinburgh World Writers' Conference 1. Summary of the impact (indicative maximum 100 words) Research by Dr Angela Bartie and Dr Eleanor Bell on the 1962 Edinburgh International Writers’ Conference initiated a major global literary conference series in 15 countries, involving 262 writers and engaging thousands of audiences at events and online in a major debate about literature and its role in contemporary life. The 2012-13 Edinburgh World Writers’ Conference was conceived after Bartie and Bell contacted the Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF) early in 2010 to propose collaborative events to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Conference. This has resulted in over £700,000 in extra funding to the EIBF, the re-introduction of a multiple writer format (opening up new channels of communication amongst writers), and further underlined Scotland’s status as a major player in global literary culture through its worldwide events. 2. Underpinning research (indicative maximum 500 words) Context: In August 1962, a major literary conference was held as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The 1962 International Writers’ Conference brought together around 70 writers – including Norman Mailer, Mary McCarthy, Lawrence Durrell and Khushwant Singh – from all over the world to debate key themes in literature and in broader society over five days in front of a paying audience. The 1962 Conference provided a window into the major debates of the 1960s, challenged tradition both in the arts in Scotland and more broadly, and gave a snapshot of a society seeking to make sense of rapid change.

The Historicity of Barbour's Bruce By JAMES HAND TAGGART School of Scottish Studies Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow A thesis submitted'to the University of Glasgow in May 2004 for the degreeof Doctor of Philosophy ii Acknowledgments Professor Geoffrey Barrow took time to discuss various aspects of Barbour's purpose in writing The Bruce. Professor Archie Duncan spent hours with me on several occasions. His knowledge of The Bruce is unsurpassed;he shared it most generously. He was patient when I questioned some of his conclusions about Barbour's work and its historicity. His edition of The Bruce, together with its extensivenotes, was invaluable for my analysis of Barbour. Drs. Sonia Cameron and Fiona Watson also gave generouslyof their time at crucial points. I am especially grateful to my supervisor, Professor Edward Cowan. He never failed to smile and brew up a coffee on the many occasionsI visited his room in the Department of Scottish History. He kept my enthusiasm going over a prolonged period, and helped to structure my work in a way that made the analyses more accessibleand the discussion more meaningful. He vigorously defendedme and my work against aggressive and unprofessional attack, and encouraged me to think rigorously at every point. I am glad, though, to observethat I finally convinced him that the carl of Carrick killed, but did not murder, the lord of Badenoch on 10 February 1306. Thanks for your guidanceand friendship, Ted.
