Amatrusian beetles might look vicious, but they never attack people,” the young wizard said as he and his companions waded through a murky swamp in the Feywild. “Follow me!” The skull tied to his belt hummed with arcane energy, and its deep voice intoned a string of incomprehensible syllables through its motionless jaw. “Well, yes, Metrucius, there have been a few cases, but . .” He paused for a bit, looking around in all directions. “You know, I was thinking perhaps we should take othat alternate path between those trees over there.” The spirits called familiars serve their arcane masters as spies, messengers, guards, combat assistants, sages, and constant companions. These minuscule spirits take the form of animals, monsters, or objects, which frequently allows others to identify devoted practitioners of the arcane arts. They can provide knowledge and assistance about a variety of subjects, depending on the type of familiar. More powerful spellcasters can call upon different forms of familiars (many of which are reminiscent of creatures from the paragon and epic tiers) by either gaining a familiar later in their adventuring careers or warping an existing familiar into a new form. Familiars were introduced in the Arcane Power™ supplement. This article expands the selection of familiars and debuts the familiar master paragon path. TM & © 2009 Wizards of the Coast LLC. Those who circumvent the proper order, such as the dubious warlocks and their untamed cousins the sorcerers, pervert magi- cal energy—or, worse, are ruled by it. For this reason wizards guard their secrets well, teaching their lore only to those worthy candidates who have both the mental acuity and the strength of will to use it.

This concept was explored in the best-selling Genius Guide to the Godling, but that material hardly exhausted the subject. The godlings in that first volume focused on flesh and blood, brawn and brains, striding the world as paragons of human endeavors. They did not, however, touch on the idea of godlings whose affinities lie closer to the mystical world—channeling their connections to divinity into magical effects that no mortal spellcaster could ever equal. The Genius Guide to Mystic Godlings expands the concept of semi-divine characters to include those whose godly heritage manifests itself through magics and spellcasting. These godlings do not fit as readily into the ordinary world. Mortals can sense the power they wield and sometimes find it unsettling. Even the godlings themselves have an uneasy relationship with their own powers—some finding their earthly bodies barely up to the task of containing so much raw energy.
