Archaic Eretria
ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. Remembering Music in Early Greece
REMEMBERING MUSIC IN EARLY GREECE JOHN C. FRANKLIN This paper contemplates various ways that the ancient Greeks preserved information about their musical past. Emphasis is given to the earlier periods and the transition from oral/aural tradition, when self-reflective professional poetry was the primary means of remembering music, to literacy, when festival inscriptions and written poetry could first capture information in at least roughly datable contexts. But the continuing interplay of the oral/aural and written modes during the Archaic and Classical periods also had an impact on the historical record, which from ca. 400 onwards is represented by historiographical fragments. The sources, methods, and motives of these early treatises are also examined, with special attention to Hellanicus of Lesbos and Glaucus of Rhegion. The essay concludes with a few brief comments on Peripatetic historiography and a selective catalogue of music-historiographical titles from the fifth and fourth centuries. Uniquely valuable, for instance, is Herodotus’ allusion to an Argive musical efflorescence in the late sixth century,2 nowhere else explicitly attested (3.131–2). In other cases we learn less about real musical history than an author’s own biases and predilections. Thus Plato describes Egypt as a never-never- land where no innovation was ever permitted in music; it is hard to know whether Plato fabricated this statement out of nothing to support his conservative and ideal society, or is drawing, towards the same end, upon a more widely held impression—obviously superficial—of a foreign, distant culture (Laws 656e–657f). -

Te Menippean satiric method includes the interrogation of mental attitudes, the querying of inhu- mane orthodoxy as well as the re-negotiation of philosophical standpoints of persons, institutions and nations. Tis form of satire resembles the innuendoes and moral inclinations of some Nigerian folktales. Tis similarity largely informs Adesanmi’s imaginative dexterity in attacking ineptitude and shortcomings of the interrogated space. Indeed, with the combination of Menippean ridicule and the narratology of African folklore, the satirist, Adesanmi, is methodologically equipped to inveigh against the recklessness in Africa and to promote rectitude therein. Tis study, there- fore, examines the constituents of Menippean satire such as multiple viewpoint, dis- continuity, humour, and mind setting as preponderant elements in Adesanmi’s You’re Not a Country, Africa. Tese constituents have a distinct interface with the allegory and didacticism of African folklore all of which enable Adesanmi to foreground the need for renewal and rebirth in a promising continent. Johnson’s Christie Malry’s Own Double-Entry Abstract Menippean satire is an ancient form of prose whose inclusiveness still prevents scholars from reaching an agreement on its one generic definition. While in its classical understanding the genre is regarded as long-extinct, some argue that its elements were carried on to the works of postmodern authors unafraid to experiment with new means of literary expression – B.S. John- son being their prime example. At first, the author’s outward hostility towards well-established conventions makes it highly unlikely for him to draw inspiration from ancient genres such as the Menippean satire. Is it then possible that while still being an uncompromised experimenter, he was also a worthy successor of classical parodists? Echoing James E. Irby’s (Borges’s editor’s) claim that that “all writers are more or less faithful amanuenses of the spirit, translators and annotators of pre-existing archetypes,” this paper aims to analyze affinities between Johnson’s penultimate novel, Christie Malry’s Own Double-Entry (1973), and the features of the Menippean satire as specified by, among others, Mikhail Bakhtin in Problems of Dostoyevsky’s Poetics (1984) and H. Rikonnen in Menippean Satire as a Literary Genre (1987). While in its classical understanding this ancient form of prose is regarded long-extinct, these scholars argue that its elements can be found in the works of the more inventive modern authors. -

A Convergence of Character: Ajax as Themistocles (and vice versa) in the Greek Imagination For nearly a century now critics of the Ajax have tentatively speculated that the tragic life of Themistocles inspired Sophocles’ characterization of the Athenian hero from Salamis. The comparison traditionally centers on their respective falls from grace, deaths, and contested burials. Themistocles, who had led the Greeks to victory at the Battle of Salamis, was later ostracized by the Athenians, condemned for treason in absentia, and denied burial in Athens before being secretly interred there by his family and eventually redeemed (Thuc. 1.138.6; Plut. Them. 32.4-5). Likewise, the critics note, Sophocles’ Ajax was condemned by the Greeks for turning against them, died by suicide, and was initially prevented from receiving proper funeral rites before his burial and heroization (e.g. Bowra 1944, 49-50, Hesk 2003, 20; cf. Rose 1995). This paper explores the question further and seeks to identify other points of contact between Sophocles’ Ajax and the biographical narratives surrounding Themistocles. The dispersal of relevant evidence suggests the existence of a deeper discourse and mutual influences among poets and historians. For example, Themistocles is also said to have committed suicide (Thuc. 1.138.4). According to Plutarch (Them. 31.4-5), he acted out of respect for his earlier achievements and chose a fitting suicide over diminished glory, not unlike Ajax who sought to preserve his dignity through honorable self-destruction (Aj. 470-80). If Themistocles did resemble Ajax in the Greek imagination, it is possible, and I think likely, that the mytho-poetic portrait of the hero inspired the composition of certain stories about Themistocles like the one Plutarch tells about his death. -

Since this couplet is all we have of the poem, it has been tempting to see a simple ironic contrast between the first line and the second. The opening image is one of irresistible seductiveness, with its appeal to the woman’s gaze which is both beautiful and confronting. The implications of ἐμβλέπω, ‘to look directly, gaze intently’, are clear from other classical instances: Plato’s Socrates claims to be almost overwhelmed by a youth’s gaze (ἐνέβλεψέ τέ μοι τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ἀμήχανόν τι οἷον, Charm. 155c–d) and Xenophon uses the same verb of a seductive glance which is wielded like a hunting net to snare a suitor (Mem. 3.11.10).1 The seduc- * My thanks to Peter Agócs, Holger Essler, Glenn W. Text as Paratext: Pindar, Sappho, and Alexandrian Editions Enrico Emanuele Prodi HAT LITTLE SURVIVES of the archaic Greek lyricists has come down to us as bare text, shorn of music, Wdance, location, ambience, occasion, ceremony.1 Our texts ultimately go back to Alexandria and the late third century B.C., when the scholars of the Museum compiled what were to become the canonical editions of those poets; and what those editions preserved and enabled to circulate anew throughout the Greek-speaking world were written words alone. But that from sung spectacle to written text, from body and voice to papyrus and ink, was not the only change of state to which lyric poetry was subjected between the archaic and the Hellenistic age. Another, equally momentous transforma- tion took place: individual compositions which were originally independent of, and unrelated to, one another became joined together in a fixed sequence as constituents of a larger unit, the book.2 Lyric was not the only kind of poetry that was affected by this 1 Fragments of Pindar are cited from Snell-Maehler, fragments of Sappho and Alcaeus from Voigt. Poets and Poetics in Greek Literary Epigram A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Classics by Charles S. Gutzwiller, Ph.D. 1 Abstract This dissertation offers a new analysis of the treatment of poets and poetics in Greek literary epigram from the early Hellenistic Period (3rd century BCE) down to the early Roman Imperial Period (1st century CE). In their authorial self-representations (the poetic ego or literary persona), their representation of other poets, and their thematization of poetry more generally, literary epigrammatists define, and successively redefine, the genre of epigram itself against the background of the literary tradition. This process of generic self-definition begins with the earliest literary epigrammatists’ fusion of inscriptional epigram with elements drawn from other genres, sympotic and erotic poetry and heroic epic, and their exploitation of the formal and conceptual repertoire of epigram to thematize poetic discourse. With the consolidation of the epigrammatic tradition in the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, the distinctively epigrammatic poetic discourse that had evolved in the 3rd century BCE was subsumed into the persona of the poet himself, who is now figured as the very embodiment of the epigrammatic tradition and genre. In the first century BCE, as epigram was transplanted from Greece to the new cultural context of Roman Italy, the figure of the epigrammatist served to articulate the place of both poetry and the poet in this new world.
