  • An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno
Menu Search Red Bull Music Academy Daily An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno A look back at the stripped-down subgenre that defined the German capital from 1998-2008 September 7, 2018 By Joshua Glazer In 1998, the rave scene that gripped Germany after reunification was at its apex. What had started in the literal underground spaces of post-GDR Berlin after the fall of the Wall had gone mainstream, with millions of young people celebrating the colorful culture of electronic dance music all across the country. But the techno utopia envisioned by many as the new millenium approached was already starting to come undone. The trend was swiftly co-opted – ironically, by some of the same capitalist forces that had defeated the communist system a decade earlier. The bubble soon burst, and many of those truly dedicated to the music were forced to rebuild. The result was something that was the opposite of rave’s over-the- top excess, a movement that idealized a minimalist aesthetic in sound, visuals and fashion. It was a lifestyle that resisted the unbridled exuberance of rave in favor of something more sustainable – and sustain it did, with tracks that filled whole sides of vinyl and parties that went on for days at a time. Berlin became the center for this new creative community, drawing in techno practitioners and aficionados from around the world who came for the party and stayed for the ease of living made possible by cheap rents and easy access to artist visas. “Minimal” became the buzzword around this scene, and while overindulgences were aplenty in freewheeling afterhours, the “arm, aber sexy” (poor but sexy) slogan coined by then-mayor Klaus Wowereit could not have been a more accurate appraisal of Berlin’s appeal.

  • Richie Hawtin Is a Genuine Original. His Critical Acclaim Spans the Creative Realm of the Fine Art Community to the Technological Vanguard
Richie Hawtin is a genuine original. His critical acclaim spans the creative realm of the fine art community to the technological vanguard. Meanwhile, as a performing artist, he is constantly pushing conceptual frontiers, moving things forward, welcoming as many as he can to ideas and experiences that would have seemed pure science fiction when he began his career. Hawtin is British-born and Canadian-raised. He is the business mind behind Plus8 and MINUS Records, nurturing a plethora of talent from Speedy J in the early 90s to Gaiser in the 2010s. And, of course, he is Plastikman, perhaps that most of all, electronic musician par excellence, maintaining an underground agenda of avant-garde electronica over six albums (and two compilations). He returned spectacularly to the live circuit in 2010 with his Plastikman 1.5 incarnation which held its own among the new EDM generation of Skrillex, Deadmau5, etc, stars to whom Hawtin is both old guard ambassador and hero. It is not just the rising young talents who look up to Hawtin. Daniel Miller, founder of the seminal Mute label, referred to him as “a leader” and “a pioneer”, the New York Times called him “one of the electronic dance world's intellectual forces,”. However, it's plaudits from other areas that showcase the breadth of Hawtin's appeal. Raf Simons, former Creative Director at Dior, says he listens “to Richie Hawtin's music like others listen to classical music”, calling him “the Kraftwerk of today”. In 2013 Simons asked Hawtin to put on a special performance at the Guggenheim, New York's iconic art museum, as the centre-piece for their annual fund- raiser.

With stunning cinematography and a knack for capturing astonishing moments, The End of Time travels the planet — from the CERN particle accelerator outside Geneva to the lava flows of Hawaii; from a disintegrating Detroit where Henry Ford Built his first factory to the tree where Buddha was enlightened. Both mind-expanding and eerily familiar, Mettler's provocative film explores the links between renewal and destruction, between primordial mysticism and the furthest reaches of modern science, giving the viewer a transcendent cinematic experience. • Junior Boys B.B.C. English Info
The white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. But since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action. Certainly not in the case of Junior Boys, who’ve readied a new album, Big Black Coat - due for release on 5 February 2016. A strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release. The Hamilton, Ontario duo have racked up four albums since they formed in 1999, including their 2004 debut Last Exit and 2006’s So This Is Goodbye, two rapturous – and rapturously received – records that were as poignant as they were impeccably produced, and prefigured Album: ‘Big Black Coat’ the digital R&B so beloved of many an artist in the last few years. Two albums followed, the Cat No: Slang50089 Format: CD / LP / Digital last in 2011, by which time high expectation had begun to leach the fun from making records. Release: 05.02.2016 Label: City Slang The years since then have been filled with nourishing independent pursuits. Greenspan released two solo singles and a collaborative EP on Jiaolong, the label run by his old friend and fellow Hamiltonian Dan Snaith (aka Caribou, Daphni – Greenspan also mixed several TRACKLISTING songs from Swim).

  • Detroit Techno and Dystopian Digital Culture
Hooked on an Affect: Detroit Techno and Dystopian Digital Culture Feature Article Richard Pope Ryerson University Abstract Detroit techno is typically historicized as having grown out of the late 1970s and early 1980s middle-class, consumerist, and aspirational high school social party scene, giving the impression that Detroit techno artists created forward-thinking music as a means to acquire subcultural capital and (re)produce their identities. In this essay, this position is nuanced for a more complex understanding of techno’s relation to the quotidian phenomenological encounter with the dystopian setting of Detroit. Concomitantly, predominant theorizations of affect within the humanities, which emphasize the utopian, hopeful dimensions of affect’s inherent productivity, are supplemented for an understanding of productive energy revolving around affects of dystopia and on a certain hopelessness which scholars, in the years ahead, will increasingly have to negotiate. Keywords: techno, Detroit, dystopia, affect, aesthetic, desire, subculture Richard Pope is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ryerson University. His recent work examines the dystopian horizon of contemporary capitalism and popular culture. He has published previously in Camera Obscura, Space and Culture, Film-Philosophy, and Cinema Journal (forthcoming). Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture 2 (1): 24–44 ISSN 1947-5403 ©2011 Dancecult http://dj.dancecult.net DOI 10.12801/1947-5403.2011.02.01.02 Pope | Hooked on an Affect 25 Without sounding too new-agey or metaphysical, I think that Detroit, the actual “location of Detroit, is the instigator behind everything. —Jason Huvaere (in Sicko 2010: 92) It’s the emptiness in the city that puts the wholeness in the music.
