  • The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. • The Ever-Expanding UIC LETTER from the DEAN
THE UIC SCRIBE Summer Edition: Vol.8 ED.2, 2013 STUDENT-ORGANIZED OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF YONSEI, UNDERWOOD INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE Snippets from Songdo: President Park Geun-hye SUMMER SMART CITY SONGDO & GENDER EQUALITY Must List The Ever-Expanding UIC LETTER FROM THE DEAN The Liberal Arts for International Minds ith this issue of The Scribe, we are launching a new motto for Underwood International College: “The liberal arts for international minds.” This phrase Wwill be joining our classic “Join tomorrow’s leaders at the hub of East Asia,” which will continue to be used. The new motto will be featured in our page in the Global Education section of Newsweek Asia (December 31, 2012 edition), as well as our new 2013 UIC brochure, due to hit the shelves sometime in mid-January. The idea of the “liberal arts” is particularly meaningful for universities in Asia in the twenty-first century. While a Confucian tradition does place great value on aca- demics knowledgeable in literature, philosophy, and the arts, Asia in the last century has seen an emphasis on pre-professional, career-driven higher education. Korea, in having high school students decide upon humanities/social sciences vs. science/ engineering tracks, continues this trend in early specialization with a major-focused, professionally purposeful college education, and the popularity of Business as a college major attests to this emphasis. But the liberal arts is striking back. Liberal arts has always been about the skills and tools necessary for success, rather than content, a quality much needed in our information age. Like the old saying that rightly values “teaching someone how to fish” over the gift of a fish, the liberal arts emphasizes the tools of critical thinking, close analysis, and an awareness of democratic citizenship.

CLAREMONT MCKENNA COLLEGE South Korean Men and the Military: The Influence of Conscription on the Political Behavior of South Korean Males SUBMITTED TO Professor Jennifer M. Taw AND Dean Nicholas Warner BY Hyo Sung Joo for SENIOR THESIS Fall 2014 December 1st, 2014 2 3 ABSTRACT This thesis evaluates the effects of compulsory military service in South Korea on the political behavior of men from a public policy standpoint. I take an institutional point of view on conscription, in that conscription forces the military to accept individuals with minimal screening. Given the distinct set of values embodied by the military, I hypothesize that the military would need a powerful, comprehensive, and fast program of indoctrination to re-socialize civilians into military uniform, trustable enough to be entrusted with a gun or a confidential document. Based on the existence of such a program and related academic literature, I go on to look at how a military attitude has political implications, especially for the security-environment of the Korean peninsula.

FRAGILE BILINGUALS: RESCALING 'GOOD' AND 'BAD' SOUTH KOREAN BILINGUALS BY LEE JIN CHOI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Adrienne Lo, Chair Professor Anne Haas Dyson Professor Violet Harris Associate Professor Joseph Sung-Yul Park, National University of Singapore Abstract My dissertation explores how U.S.-based multilingual South Korean speakers of English and Korean negotiate their positions in the over-crowded and complex lingusitic market, and try to stake a claim to being legitimate bilinguals through the process of metapragmatic typification (Agha, 2007). First, I investigate how tensions between Koreanness (nationalism/tradition) and cosmopolitanism (national betrayal) are exercised and displayed through mediatized discourses. Using discourse analysis, I then analyze interactions among a group of transnational South Korean graduate students who attend a North American university. By analyzing naturally occurring data from their social meetings and computer-mediated conversations, I examine how they consume circulating language ideologies, and locate themselves through the selective production of ideological representations or language registers associated with certain models of personhood. In particular, I focus on the process of metapragmatic typification, which shows how participants discursively
