Technical Assistance Guidance Serving Male-Identified Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence by Eric Stiles, Ivonne Ortiz, and Casey Keene July 2017 There are many effects of the abuse that are particular to males. Men are not supposed to be victims. Society tells us: men don’t get depressed, men don’t seek help, men don’t need therapy… – Male survivor Historically, domestic violence programs were born from the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s to address the needs of female survivors, who still represent the majority of victims seeking services today. Generally, the domestic violence movement has framed its work on a gender binary with men as perpetrators and women as victims. We have come to learn, however, that a woman-centered approach to advocacy only addresses the needs of a portion of survivors and largely fails to acknowledge and address male victimization. This Technical Assistance Guidance supports advocates seeking to build capacity to recognize and respond to survivors across the gender spectrum, while honoring the gender analysis that helps us understand the root causes of violence and oppression. While data continues to show that girls and VAWA Non-Discrimination women are disproportionately impacted by Grant Condition intimate partner violence, boys and men are No person in the United States also victims and deserve survivor-centered shall, on the basis of actual or and holistic services. Tommy Curry demonstrates his wide-ranging expertise in laying out a multidisciplinary historiography of black male theorizing. He alleges that feminist scholarship has used caricatures of black manhood to stand in for legitimate theory and that the careers of gender researchers themselves have profited off those caricatures. The author grieves that “[t]he prison, like death, prevents our ability to observe and study Black men and boys as they live” (p. 111). The Man-Not introduces a progressive black male studies that is decidedly nonfeminist, and the book demands a radical rethinking of the category of “gender” itself. The term “man-not” captures the historical negation of black male humanity and how traditional gender theorizing has been complicit in this process. Curry chal- lenges the mimetic thesis that black men aspire to the tenets of white patriarchy. According to Curry, black mimeticism has been anchored to gender theorizing since Michele Wallace’s 1979 book Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman. Curry faults two gender frameworks in particular for continuing to advance the mimetic thesis. The first is Raewyn Connell’s original formulation of hegemonic masculinity. -

It is becoming increasingly clear that we are now facing with what might accurately be called an educational crisis, especially in the field of affectivity and sexuality. In many places, curricula are being planned and implemented which “allegedly convey a neutral conception of the per- son and of life, yet in fact reflect an anthropology opposed to faith and to right reason”.1 The disorientation regarding anthropology which is a widespread feature of our cultural landscape has undoubtedly helped to destabilise the family as an institution, bringing with it a tendency to cancel out the differences between men and women, presenting them instead as merely the product of historical and cultural conditioning. 2. The context in which the mission of education is carried out is charac- terized by challenges emerging from varying forms of an ideology that is given the general name ‘gender theory’, which “denies the difference and reciprocity in nature of a man and a woman and envisages a society with- out sexual differences, thereby eliminating the anthropological basis of the family. This ideology leads to educational programmes and legislative enactments that promote a personal identity and emotional intimacy rad- ically separated from the biological difference between male and female. Consequently, human identity becomes the choice of the individual, one which can also change over time”.2 3. Expansions upon the Book of Genesis Introductory Remarks Some years ago I had made a verse-by-verse outline of Genesis–not every verse but those I deemed important–with a specific view in mind. While information about Genesis or any biblical book can be fascinating and informative, it remains secondary to the intent of this document which aimed at assisting the reader to expand his or her understanding and experience of lectio divina. That is to say, a person is encouraged to read a biblical verse or two (usually no more than that) and then lay aside the Bible itself while keeping it at hand in case one needs to return to the text. The need usually arises from the presence of distractions, of thinking of things other than the sacred text. This gesture of putting down the Bible is significant...not so much to allow for reflection, important as that is, but as a sign that one is disposed to resting in God’s presence. More specifically, after reading a short verse one feels a deep peace welling up, so at this point one no longer feels the need to use his or her mind to ponder the text. This happens at the prompting of divine grace–a person doesn’t ask for it, it simply happens–provided that one is obedient to the text. And so we come to the purpose not only of these reflections but of other biblically related documents on this home page: to assist the reader in the act of lectio divina. To assist in this process, the document at hand presents a fleshing out of the Book of Genesis from what could be taken as a mythic point of view. -

Moody Bible Institute May, 2009 December 2019 Dr. Karin Heller, Faculty Advisor Dr. Joshua Leim, Reviewer Summary of Salient Points This research will demonstrate that bodily existence is essential to human nature and that Christian worship practices must go hand-in-hand with a sound understanding of human embodiment in order to be faithful to the essence of Christianity. The following thesis demonstrates that the biblical understanding is that humanity was created as a body enlivened by the breath of God and intended to be the sacred sanctuary where God’s presence will dwell. In the incarnation of Jesus Christ, God’s goal to make humanity the sanctuary for his presence is fulfilled. Jesus Christ is the image of God, who redeems and represents all humanity regardless of age, class, race, or gender. All humanity finds their ultimate destiny in union with Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit, by which those who believe are transformed into God’s dwelling place. -

Why Men Should Support Gender Equity Michael S. Kimmel, Ph.D. Department of Sociology State University of New York at Stony Brook Just two months ago, people around the world celebrated International Women’s Day. Ninety-three years ago, the first official International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, organized by the great German feminist Clara Zetkin, who wanted a single day to remember the 1857 strike of garment workers in the U.S. that led to the formation of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. On March 19, 1911— the anniversary has changed since then—more than a million women and men rallied to demand the right to work, to hold public office and to vote. Think of how much has changed in those 93 years! Throughout most, if not all of the industrial world, women have: gained the right to vote, to own property in their own name, to divorce, to work in every profession, to join the military, to control their own bodies, to challenge men’s presumed “right” to sexual access once married, or on a date, or in the workplace. Indeed, the women’s movement is one of the great success stories of the twentieth century, perhaps of any century. It is the story of a monumental, revolutionary transformation of the lives of more than half the population. But what about the other half? Today, this movement for women’s equality remains stymied, stalled. Women continue to experience discrimination in the public sphere. They bump their heads on glass ceilings in the workplace, experience harassment and less-than fully welcoming environments in every institution the public sphere, still must fight to control their own bodies, and to end their victimization through rape, domestic violence, and trafficking in women. -

1 The role of men and boys in promoting gender equality Presentation at the Harvard Club, New York 7 May 2007 I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you this evening this most important topic. I would like to begin by briefly outlining the evolution of the attention to men and boys in the gender equality work and then outline some of the challenges we face in moving forward. I. INTRODUCTION Early efforts for the advancement of women: The goal of promoting gender equality (or equality between women and men) has been on the agenda of the international community since the founding of the United Nations. It is well established in the UN Charter.World leaders assembled at the 2005 World Summit at the UN here in New York affirmed that “Progress for women is progress for all”. The initial work of the United Nations in this area was labelled “advancement of women”. Efforts focused on compiling data and statistics and analyzing the situation of women around the world. Work on the empowerment of women and on securing the human rights of women, for example political rights, was given importance at an early stage. Women in development: By the mid 1960s - particularly with the increased number of developing countries in the United Nations - attention was given to what became known as “women in development”. The initial focus was on ensuring that women were involved in development efforts and that the benefits of development reached women as well as men. As this work progressed, it became increasingly clear, however, that women were already participating in development efforts – in fact they were the mainstay of development in many parts of the world, particularly in rural areas. -

The Black Male Privileges Checklist By Jewel Woods © Renaissance Male Project (2008) What does "privilege" have to do with Black men? We understand some kinds of privilege. The privilege to call a black man "Boy", even if that black man happens to be 60 years old or older. The privilege to drive a car and never have to worry that the police will racially profile you. Privileges that have nothing to do with what a person has earned, but rather are based entirely on who a person is, or what color they are. As African Americans, we have the ability to critique and condemn these types of "unearned assets" because we recognize that these privileges come largely at our expense. We have also learned from social and political movements that have sought to redress these privileges, and academic disciplines that have provided us with the tools to critically examine and explore them. However, there is another type of privilege that has caused untold harm to both black men and women but has not had the benefit of being challenged by a social and political movement within our community, nor given adequate attention within our own academic community. The privilege that I am referring to is male privilege. Male privilege is more than just a "double standard", because it is based on attitudes or actions that come at the expense of women. Just as white privilege comes at the expense of African Americans and other people of color, gender double standards come at the expense of women. Given the devastating history of racism in this country, it is understandable that getting black men to identify with the concept of male privilege isn't easy! For many black men, the phrase "black male privilege" seems like an oxymoron -- three words that simply do not go together. -

Parter Many explanations of male homosexuality include the ideas that homosexuals are more effiminate than other "' males and/or that they are more passive. The passivity may be hidden by an aggressive, hypermasculine facade. Youthfulness is thought to be an important variable in prison homosexuality. The Internal-External Control Scale, CPI Fe scale, a Body Parts Satisfaction test, and a Figure Preference Test were given to 96 prison inamtes divided into 3 groups: ~ '- 24 effeminate-passive homosexuals, 29 masculine-aggressive homosexuals, and 43 non-homosexuals. It had been hypoth- esized the groups would differ in test performances and age of first prison admission. No statistical support was found for the hypoth- esized differences between groups on any of the variables. 1 Howard K. Violence Against Women Also a Man’s Problem The Majority Opinion of the Editorial Board of Carpe Diem Magazine March 2007 People still don’t get it. Rape isn’t some freak act of violence that happens to a few unlucky women, domestic violence isn’t just an indication that a marriage has gone wrong, and sexual harassment isn’t just perpetuated by mentally ill bums. This violence isn’t just an individual’s problem. Violence against women is a social epidemic that affects everyone – both women and men. It won’t go away until we all choose to face it. One in three women suffers physical or sexual assault by a man at some point in her life. Who’s responsible? With few exceptions, usually men. Nine out of ten perpetrators of physical assault are men, and they perpetrate 95 percent of all domestic violence. About 25 percent of all men will use violence against a partner in their lifetime, and almost 100 percent of those imprisoned for rape are men. Still think violence against women is just a woman’s problem? What’s stopping men from changing? Probably what society tells us a man should be. Males are taught early on not to cry and not to show weakness, especially fear. Often, men who do express their feelings are immediately labeled as “gay” or “feminine.” How can men begin to address their own violence when they’re taught to keep their feelings to themselves? Before anything, men have to feel safe to examine their own behaviors.
