  • Music and the American Civil War
“LIBERTY’S GREAT AUXILIARY”: MUSIC AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR by CHRISTIAN MCWHIRTER A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2009 Copyright Christian McWhirter 2009 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Music was almost omnipresent during the American Civil War. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans.

  • The Muse of Fire: Liberty and War Songs As a Source of American History
3 7^ A'£?/</ THE MUSE OF FIRE: LIBERTY AND WAR SONGS AS A SOURCE OF AMERICAN HISTORY DISSERTATION Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Kent Adam Bowman, B.A., M.A Denton, Texas August, 1984 Bowman, Kent Adam, The Muse of Fire; Liberty and War Songs as a Source of American History. Doctor of Philosophy (History), August, 1984, 337 pp., bibliography, 135 titles. The development of American liberty and war songs from a few themes during the pre-Revolutionary period to a distinct form of American popular music in the Civil War period reflects the growth of many aspects of American culture and thought. This study therefore treats as historical documents the songs published in newspapers, broadsides, and songbooks during the period from 1765 to 1865. Chapter One briefly summarizes the development of American popular music before 1765 and provides other introductory material. Chapter Two examines the origin and development of the first liberty-song themes in the period from 1765 to 1775. Chapters Three and Four cover songs written during the American Revolution. Chapter Three describes battle songs, emphasizing the use of humor, and Chapter Four examines the figures treated in the war song. Chapter Five covers the War of 1812, concentrating on the naval song, and describes the first use of dialect in the American war song. Chapter Six covers the Mexican War (1846-1848) and includes discussion of the aggressive American attitude toward the war as evidenced in song.

  • Civil War Song Book
Around the Campfire: A Civil War Songbook Compiled by: Neil K. MacMillan 2 Introduction The men and boys who served during the Civil War were heroes and yet, they were ordinary people for their day. They came from farms and cities. They were brick layers, farmers, stevedores, glass blowers and firemen. And they were husbands, sons, lovers and brothers. A handful were women. They saw horrors that this country hasn't seen in 136 years. American service men wouldn't see anything to compare with Andersonville or Elmira for eighty-one years. They would never again see a day as bloody as September 17, 1862. Over six hundred thousand of them would die of gunfire, bayonet and the myriad of diseases that ran rampant through camps on both sides and all theatres of the great conflict. Like most other units, the 12th United States Infantry suffered what would be considered inordinate casualties today. When the regiment was formed in May of 1861 at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York, it numbered 1070 men and officers. Three and a half years later, when the unit was withdrawn from combat, there were 124. There had been several recruiting drives in the interim but the numbers speak for themselves. In that the Regulars of the 12th were no different from their Volunteer counterparts. The 12th is still serving with the United States Army. The men swore, drank, fought and they sang. I have tried to put songs representing as many facets of the Civil War as possible. It is intended as first and foremost a songbook.

  • Music of the 26Th North Carolina Regimental Band from the Civil War
Music of the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band from the Civil War Among the rarities in the Moravian Music Foundation’s collections are the only known complete sets of band books from a Confederate band in the American Civil War.1 These were brought to Salem because the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band C.S.A. was comprised wholly of Moravian musicians from Salem. This recording, based on new scholarly editions of the works, reveals new insights into the rich musical heritage of the South, and indeed of the whole nation, in the second half of the nineteenth century. “The South was the underdog in [the Civil War], overmatched in weaponry, manpower, money, machinery, and raw materials, but when it came to singing, the South easily won, and it matched the North when it came to music in general. Outmanned and outgunned during the war, the South was certainly not musically bested.” 2 One of the more fascinating aspects of the musical life of nineteenth-century America was the rise and flourishing of brass bands (and later, mixed wind ensembles). Prior to the mid-nineteenth century, brass instruments were valveless; thus, with the exception of the trombone, their use by amateur players was limited to a few chord tones in the lower part of the harmonic series. Melodic playing was restricted to the higher harmonics, and was therefore the purview of only the more accomplished players. With the invention by Adolph Sax of valved brass instruments (known as “saxhorns”) in the 1840s, it became easier to learn to play brass instruments in all ranges, melody and harmony alike.

If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life.
