No attempt at phylogenetic reconstruction has been made since recent revisions in circumscription, and previous reconstructions did not include a good representation of species. A new molecular survey is thus needed. Methods Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) 1 and 2 and the 5.8S gene. Parsimony and Bayesian approaches were used. Key Results A close correlation between geography and the phylogenetic tree based on ITS sequences was found in all the analyses, with three main groups being resolved: (1) comprising the most widely distributed circum- Mediterranean/Eurosiberian sections; (2) the western Mediterranean sections; and (3) the eastern Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian sections. The results show that the sectional classification in current use needs major revision, with many old sections being merged into larger ones. -

E-mail [email protected] 1 • Background and Aims The geographic distribution of the genus Plectocephalus comprises a single species in Ethiopia, two in North America and possibly four more in South America, in a striking disjunction that is exceptional for genera of the tribe Cardueae. The enormity of this disjunction cast doubts on the precise taxonomic delineation of the genus, which is not unanimously recognized as a natural entity. Our aims were to define the generic boundaries of Plectocephalus and to formulate a hypothesis that would explain its natural range. • Methods A combined molecular approach, using nuclear ITS and ETS and plastid trnL-trnL-F, rpl32-trnLUAG and ndhF markers, was chosen for phylogenetic reconstruction by maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. • Key Results Phylogenetic analysis shows that Plectocephalus is a natural genus that includes the African species P. varians, together with all the native South American species, currently classified as Centaurea, C. cachinalensis, C. floccosa and C. tweediei. The recognition of Centaurodendron as an independent genus, which we consider appropriate, would make Plectocephalus paraphyletic. -

Host plant speciWcity of the insect was evaluated in no-choice oviposition experiments. Feeding on leaf tissue by adult females was highly correlated to oviposition rate, both of which occurred primarily on plants in the tribe Cardueae, and especially those in the monophyletic subtribe Centaureinae. -

TREMBLAY Sous la direction de : Claude Lemieux, directeur de recherche Guillaume Bilodeau, codirecteur de recherche Résumé Les dommages causés par les pathogènes des plantes sont une menace redoutable pour l’environnement, la diversité, ainsi que pour une partie considérable des ressources naturelles forestières et agronomiques telles que les arbres, les plantes et les récoltes. Les endroits situés à proximité des ports d’importation pour le commerce international et des sites de décharge de déchets verts sont considérés comme étant à risque pour l’introduction d’organismes exotiques et indésirables tels que des insectes, des phytopathogènes et des plantes envahissantes. Bien qu’il existe plusieurs méthodes développées et validées selon des standards établis visant à détecter certains genres préoccupants ou espèces ciblées, la plupart d’entre elles sont mal adaptées aux analyses à grande échelle ou sont limitées en ce qui concerne le nombre d’organismes différents pouvant être détectés simultanément. L’objectif principal de ce projet était de développer une méthode de détection nouvelle, plus rapide, à haut débit, hyper sensible et couvrant de plus grandes superficies afin de contribuer à l’amélioration des méthodes de dépistage et de lutte contre les phytopathogènes et les espèces envahissantes. Le projet a tiré avantage d’enquêtes en entomologie d’envergure nationale et préétablies par l’Agence Canadienne d’Inspection des Aliments en réutilisant les liquides de préservation provenant de pièges à insectes. -

Species rated "Q" are in accordance with the Assistant Director for Plant Industry Memorandum of January 1, 1980, entitled "Action Oriented Rating System", and Plant Industry Policy Letter 89-2, dated May 1, 1989. The absence of a taxon on this list does not exonerate it as a potential pest plant. Taxa submitted to the Botany Laboratory/Herbarium (CDA) for identification are evaluated and given an A, B or C-rating as determined from this list, are determined to be currently unrated (N-rated), or are given a Q-rating based on current evidence of potentially aggressive or invasive behavior. Q-rated taxa are to be reviewed outside of the Botany Laboratory and subsequently given a permanent rating which will appear on future versions of this list. Changes this year consist of one nomenclatural update, the addition of nine (9) Q-rated taxa; the elevation from Q to A of three (3) taxa; the classification from Q to B of one (1) taxon; the addition of five (5) new C-rated taxa, and the demotion of Imperata brevifolia (satintail) from a B-rating to a D-rating. NOMENCLATURAL CHANGE. Nothoscordum inodorum (Ait.) Nicholson has been misapplied to the false-garlic(s) found in California. This plant may be named, in the broad sense, as Nothoscordum gracile, slender false garlic, or in the narrower sense as Nothoscordum borbonicum Kunth. -
