One of the biggest factors in deciding whether to return to education is the cost. If you’re under 19 years old, full-time courses are free. If you’re 19 years old or over, you’ll find the costs can vary depending on your circumstances and the type of course you are studying.

Am I entitled to any fee remission?

Your course is free if you fulfil certain criteria. For example, if you are aged 19 to 23 and you are studying your first level 2 or first level 3 qualification or if you are undertaking an English or maths qualification and you have not already gained a GCSE English and/or maths qualification (grade C/ 4 or above).

Your course may be fully funded and therefore free if you are employed and have personal earnings below £17,374.50 or are on certain benefits. For example, this could apply if you receive Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) including those receiving National Insurance Credits only or if you receive Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are in the work-related activity group (WRAG). Other benefits may also be eligible and for further details please call or check the college website.

Advanced Learner Loans If you are 19 years old and over and a resident in the UK you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for Further Education courses at levels 3 and 4. Loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks, and you will only start to make repayments after you have completed your course and if you are earning over £27,295 a year.

Discretionary Learner Support Funds The discretionary learner support funds provide financial support to students to help them access further education. The funds are prioritised for those who face financial hardship and are subject to eligibility requirements. For example, they can be used to help with childcare costs (provider must be registered with Ofsted), course fees or travel costs for students over 19 years old.

Higher Education Loans will also be available for levels 5 and 6. If you are a Higher National, Foundation Degree or Degree student at Bishop Auckland College you may qualify for a student loan to cover the full cost of your tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university. If you are studying for a Higher National Diploma (HND) you can also apply for the ‘living costs’ element of your loan.
