Welcome to the autumn edition of Tales From The Woods magazine, a busy time for us all at this moment in time. At the end of this very month of October we shall be at London’s legendary 100 Club, and we all here at TFTW are in a state of excited anticipation in readiness for our return to this, the oldest music venue in London and possibly the UK, that has seen countless venues come and go, some lost to the passage of time since it first opened its doors in the heart of London’s west end amidst the carnage and destruction of World War II an incredible 75 years ago. The legend that is our wonderful headliner, Tommy Hunt, former member of doo- wop royalty in his native USA with The Flamingos, later to have huge hits and following as a bona fide soul man, a particular hero on the British northern soul circuit, is so looking forward to performing for us, on a show dedicated to that golden age of doo-wop back in the late fifties and early sixties. -

For example, similar consonant pairs like {m-n}, {t-s}, and {r-n} frequently rhyme whereas dissimilar consonant pairs like {m-ò}, {w-k}, and {n-p} rarely do. The current study adds to a body of literature that suggests that similarity plays a fundamental role in half rhyme formation (A. Holtman, 1996, A generative theory of rhyme: An optimality approach, PhD dissertation. Utrecht Institute of Linguistics; R. Furthermore, it is shown that Japanese speakers take acoustic details into account when they compose rap rhymes. She is one of the best-selling artists ever in Japan with total sales of approximately 30,000,000 singles and albums. She has released eight original albums, three best-of compilations and 34 singles, as of March 2009. She initially debuted in 1992 as the lead singer of Super Monkeys, with fellow Okinawa Actors School classmates Max as back dancers. She is the youngest artist to have won the award. Papes o Japanese Impefect Puns Shigeto Kawahaa Jan, 2010 2 Preface Shigeto Kawahara Rutgers University [email protected] 1Therationale This volume “Papers on Japanese puns” is a collection of papers on Japanese imperfect puns that I wrote between 2007 and 2009 (often in collaboration with Professor Kazuko Shinohara, the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology), although most ofthepapersappearinprintin2009 and 2010. There are several reasons to put together a volume like this. First, I believe that I have done a wide range of analyses on Japanese imperfect puns, and it is convenient to have a collection of relevant papers. Second, although as much as I liked—and still do like—the project, I feel that Ihavedoneenoughandamreadytomoveontootherprojects.This collection would thus serve as a closure on my side (though I plan to build my future research partially on this project). Third, related to the first two reasons, I hope that building on these works, somebody interested in this project can take up some remaining issues, and that this volume serves as a useful reference.1 2Abriefhistory Here is a somewhat personal history of how the research was developed. I was first inspired by acolloquiumtalkbyProfessorDoncaSteriadeattheUniversity of Massachusetts in 2003, and started working on Japanese rap rhyming, the result of which is included as the final paper of this volume. Professor Kazuko Shinohara and I applied the same methodology to Japanese imperfect puns, and wrote the third paper in this volume. Then, we decided that imperfect puns has lots of potential, providing a rich resource for linguistic analyses. In developing this research program, we also realized its pedagogical values because of its accessibility. -
