Grace Jeff Buckley Style - Folk-rock How are the elements used? Album - ‘Grace’ was Buckley’s debut album released in 1994. Grace Structure Voice • Typical verse chorus-structure, with bridge and guitar solo • Vocal has a very wide range Jeff Buckley towards end. • Falsetto – singing above normal top register • Intro is repeated after the choruses. • Vibrato used extensively • Ends with a short outro (same chords as chorus) • Combination of syllabic and melismatic writing Tonality and Harmony • Scoops up to notes (also known as portamento) Instruments/Ensemble • Song is minor or modal, most sections have a tonal centre of E • Screaming at points • Lead vocal and backing vocals • Unusual chord progressions – harmony is non functional • Vocal improvisations in the outro – showing off his soprano • Electric guitar • Plays broken chords at points (picking). At other points there range and virtuosity – top G!! • Acoustic guitar is strumming • Mutli-tracked vocal harmonies in bridge – also uses • Bass guitar • Chords seem complex but actually simple on the guitar. Uses vocalise (oohs and aahhs) • Drum kit technique of moving the same chord shape (which is a power • Verse 3 vocal is an octave higher, louder, uses falsetto, • Synthesizer (heard clearly in the intro – uses a wailing chord) up and down the fretboard, while keeping one or more growling, shouting and has a longer held note at the end sound strings open as a drone. nd • Improvised vocals at the end • Strings (added in V2, pizzicato in 2 pre-chorus) • Guitar uses drop D tuning – the lower E string is tuned down Use of electric guitar to the note D to give a darker feel. • Plucked or picked at the start with broken • Most sections have a tonal centre of E but Buckley uses a wide chords/arpeggios variety of chords that do not belong to one particular key. • Strumming in second part of intro and link Structure and Tonality Timbre and texture Percussive sound hitting the strings in link before V3 • Main texture is melody and accompaniment • Mostly clean guitar sound, distortion in Verse 3 and • Intro – just guitar and synth pad sound. • Seems complicated, but can be broken down into four strummed chords • Suddenly full band joins in, no vocal yet. sections • Verse 3 also has pick-scraping, sliding, glissando, palm • Verse 1 – vocals enter 1. Intro – Verse 1 – Pre-chorus – Chorus – muting, hammer-ons, pull offs, • Chorus – Backing vocals enter – very subtle. Double tracked 2. Link (from Intro) – Verse 2 – Pre-chorus – Chorus main vocals at points. 3. Bridge – • Strings are used from time to time Melodic/Musical Devices 4. Link – Verse 3 – Outro (same chords as chorus) • Ends Four main riffs in the piece: Dynamics i. Made up of semiquavers – played by electric guitar in intro • Quiet in intro ii. In the verses electric guitar plays broken chords • Volume increased by bringing more instruments. Three musical points about this piece that I like: iii. Acoustic guitar plays rhythmic, percussive riff in verses and Melody & Pitch choruses. Justify your points and use musical vocabulary. • Wide vocal range iv. In final section both guitars play a fourth riff Electronic effects • Falsetto used at points • Delay – creates an echo effect (repeats the note) • • EQ – on vocal line in middle 8, telephone like sound Tempo & Rhythm • Flanger – added to the electric guitar in the outro. Creates a Three musical points about this piece that I don’t like: • Steady 12/8 tempo swirly sound. Justify your points and use musical vocabulary. • Unusual as most pop songs in 4/4 • Distortion used on one guitar in Verse 3 • It feels faster though as the guitar plays semiquaver patterns • Effects are used most in verse 3 at the beginning. • Guitar ‘whisper effects’ used where they can be heard • Middle 8 – longer notes from strings. .

A State of Grace: The Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley: A World Premiere Event “Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise.” Bono “Tim Buckley embodied all the virtue of grace.” Rolling Stone Tim and Jeff Buckley’s legacy has inspired generations of musicians and listeners. The world premiere event A State of Grace celebrates their brilliant, complicated lives and music, bringing together six peerless singers — and musicians with an intimate understanding of the music of the Buckleys — teamed with images and stories. It is a moving, definitive portrait of two of the most beloved voices in rock, overseen by Gary Lucas, the legendary New York guitarist / composer who worked closely with Jeff, co-writing the immortal songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’. “The music of Jeff and Tim Buckley is timeless and gracefully transcendental,” says Gary. Assembled to recapture the magic of Tim and Jeff Buckley’s songs are musicians with the depth, breadth and empathy to do them justice: Martha Wainwright, Casper Clausen (of Efterklang), Willy Mason, Camille O’Sullivan, Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Cold Specks, with Gary Lucas as musical director, backed by his renowned New York ensemble Gods and Monsters. Tim and Jeff’s music becomes a point of departure for an evening of soul- stirring reinterpretation and exploration in this trailblazing event. • Official Synopsis
AMAZING GRACE: JEFF BUCKLEY A FILM THAT EXPLORES JEFF’S LEGENDARY MUSIC AND ITS ENDURING IMPACT Synopsis: In Europe, they speak of him in holy whispers. In America, he’s a mysterious footnote. Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley, a documentary film, explores the phenomenon that is Jeff Buckley. A coffeehouse chanteur, who made a name for himself covering Edith Piaf and Judy Garland in a tiny candlelit venue on the Lower East side of Manhattan, Jeff Buckley was signed by Colombia Records in the early 90’s. Columbia thought of him from the beginning as the next of what they would call their “heritage” artists. They hoped he would become their next Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen . Buckley seemed on his way to fulfilling that promise with Grace, the only finished full-length studio album of his career. Critics raved and his fan base grew, but as he was set to record his second studio album, a tragic accident ended Buckley’s life. He was 30 years old. Impossible to classify, Jeff Buckley’s four-octave voice and songs of unchecked passion and pain traverse the worlds of rock, soul, blues, gospel, folk, and torch. Though Jeff exploded onto the music scene in Europe and Australia, giving rise to a rabid cult following in the states, he never broke through American commercial radio—then dominated by Seattle grunge. Some say America just wasn’t ready for Jeff Buckley. Not yet. First-time filmmakers, Nyla Bialek Adams and Laurie Trombley, take another listen in Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley. This passionately crafted film investigates the unusual, if not extraordinary, phenomenon of Jeff Buckley—a deceased musician of modest commercial success, with only one full-length album, who became a veritable tour de force of inspiration for artists of all kinds.

  • Negative Press Project Rel FINAL REV 10-29-2017
NEWS RELEASE Contact: Ann Braithwaite (781) 259-9600 [email protected] With the Ravishing Second Album Eternal Life | Jeff Buckley Songs and Sounds the San Francisco Bay Area’s Negative Press Project Takes a Revelatory Instrumental Journey into the Heart of the Singer’s Music Jeff Buckley released one album during his all-too-brief life, but 1994’s Grace catapulted the beautiful young artist into the pop cultural firmament, where he remains an incandescently glittering presence two decades after drowning in the Wolf River. Dozens of singers have covered his songs in the ensuing years, but there’s never been a tribute like Negative Press Project’s Eternal Life | Jeff Buckley Songs and Sounds, which was produced by bass master Jeff Denson and is slated for release on his non-profit label Ridgeway Records on November 17, 2017. Co-led by bassist Andrew Lion and pianist/keyboardist Ruthie Dineen, the expansive electro-acoustic ensemble brings a supple textural palette to Buckley’s material, transforming his emotionally wrought, show-stopping vocal vehicles into strikingly beautiful instrumental settings. Erasing distinctions between jazz and chamber music, rock and instrumental pop, NPP expands Buckley’s legacy by tapping into his beatific lyricism. With a background in rock and pop, Lion came up with the idea of a Jeff Buckley project while “looking for music underserved in the modern jazz canon,” he says. “I’ve heard Brad Mehldau play some Buckley but not too many other instrumental versions. I think it’s such exalted material with a certain generation that it felt off limits.” When he approached Dineen, a player versed in classical music and Latin jazz, about arranging some Buckley songs for a concert he found an eager co-conspirator and fellow Buckley aficionado.

  • Jeff Buckley L’Anima Fragile Del Rock

Interview conducted in London on 19 April 2018. I like people to be strong and unapologetic. I like them to be beautiful too, but not passive. I don’t like women to project an “I’m going to be a little girl in your pocket” image. When I started directing videos in the 1980s, women were able to be quite strong without being deemed aggressive. I don’t like the way so many artists are overtly sexual to camera these days, as if they are in a state of sexual arousal while they’re performing—almost everybody does it now as if it’s just normal and no one even bats an eyelid.
