Some cover one area of content, while other covers another area. In this way there would be a lot of financial burden and dispersed focus. Further AIOU has its own requirement either to provide compiled material or textbook. This book is one of those series for coverage of content area requirement for B. Ed 4 Years and B. Ed 2.5 years in the field of Chemistry. This book is written as per prescribed procedure of book development. After approval of content from all statuary bodies, approval for starting development of this book was sought. Great stress has been laid in making the course to facilitate prospectus, in service and pre-service teachers for content knowledge regarding Chemistry. These electron pairs are known as shared pairs or bonding pairs, and the stable balance of attractive and repulsive forces between atoms, when they share electrons, is known as covalent bonding. For many molecules, the sharing of electrons allows each atom to attain the equivalent of a full outer shell, corresponding to a stable electronic configuration. In organic chemistry, covalent bonds are much more common than ionic bonds. The simplest example of bonding can be demonstrated by the H2 molecule. We can see from the periodic table that each hydrogen atom has a single electron. If 2 hydrogen atoms come together to form a bond, then each hydrogen atom effectively has a share in both electrons and thus each resembles a noble gas and is more stable. The 2 electrons that are shared can be represented either by 2 dots or a single dash between the atoms. Valence bond theory describes a chemical bond as the overlap of atomic orbitals. In the case of the hydrogen molecule, the 1s orbital of one hydrogen atom overlaps with the 1s orbital of the second hydrogen atom to form a molecular orbital called a sigma bond. Attraction increases as the distance between the atoms gets closer but nuclear-nuclear repulsion becomes important if the atoms approach too close. In the molecule H2, the hydrogen atoms share the two electrons via covalent bonding. Covalency is greatest between atoms of similar electronegativities. Thus, covalent bonding does not necessarily require that the two atoms be of the same elements, only that they be of comparable electronegativity. Covalent bonding that entails sharing of electrons over more than two atoms is said to be delocalized. There are a number of theories to describe chemical bonding including Valance Bond Theory and Molecular Orbital Theory. In both cases the theory attempts to rationalize the geometry of a molecule based on how the bonds form. In both cases the idea of a chemical bond results from two (or more) atoms "sharing" electrons between them to complete the valance shell octet of the atom (i.e. a covalent bond). The atoms can share electrons when the atomic orbitals interact with each other, overlapping to produce a common orbital shared by both atoms and containing two electrons. The strength of the interaction between two orbitals depends on: The relative energies of the two atomic orbitals which will combine to form the new "bonding" orbital. The closer the two atomic orbitals energies are to start, the stronger the interaction. 10 The degree of overlap between two orbitals. For the two atomic orbitals to form a new bonding orbital they must merge together to form a common volume for the two electrons to share. Due to their relative shapes two "s" orbitals can overlap to a greater extent than two "p" orbitals.

(2007) Directed by Dr. Darrell Spells. 47pp. Sensory materials that respond to chemical and mechanical stimuli are under development in many laboratories. There are many significant uses of polydiacetylene compounds as sensory material. They have been applied to drug delivery, drug design, biomolecule development, cosmetics, and national security. In this study, experiments were carried out toward the development of a novel sensory material based on the established synthetic research on polydiacetylene compounds. Synthetic routes toward sensory materials with different head groups, different carbon chains lengths, and the incorporation of molecular imprints were explored. Diacetylene moieties, which can be used for polymer vesicle formation, were prepared by two main routes. In one route, 1-iodo-1-octyne and 1-iodo-1-dodecyne were prepared as starting materials for the synthesis of two diacetylene compounds (Diacetylene I and Diacetylene II). In the other route, a mesityl alkyne was used to prepare 5-iodo-1-pentyne, which was then used to prepare a triethylamino alkyne. This in turn was used to synthesize a diacetylene (Diacetylene III). Although each diacetylene product was formed, purification by column chromatography was found to be difficult. The characteristic 13C NMR absorptions of amines are those of the a-carbons—the carbons attached directly to the nitrogen. These absorptions occur in the d 30–50 chemical-shift range. As expected from the relative electronegativities of oxygen and nitrogen, these shifts are somewhat less than the a-carbon shifts of ethers. The biosyntheses of these natural products are widely distributed among fungi, algae, marine sponges, and higher plants. As details of the biosyntheses of these intriguing compounds remains scarce, it remains important to develop molecular probes and analytical methods to study polyacetylene secondary metabolism. An effective pathway to prepare selectively deuterium-labeled linoleic acids was developed. By this Pd-catalyzed method, deuterium can be easily introduced into the vinyl position providing deuterolinoleates with very high isotopic purity. This method also provides a general route for the construction of 1,4-diene derivatives with different chain lengths and 1,4-diene locations. Linoleic acid derivatives (12-d, 13-d and 16,16,17,17,18,18,18-d7) were synthesized according to this method. A stereoselective synthesis of methyl (14Z)- and (14E)-dehydrocrepenynate was achieved in five to six steps that employed Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions to construct the double bonds between C14 and C15. Compared with earlier methods, the improved syntheses are more convenient (no spinning band distillations or GLC separation of diastereomers were necessary) and higher Z/E ratios were obtained.

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract A nearly forgotten reaction discovered more than 60 years ago—the cycloaddition of a cyclic alkyne and an organic azide, leading to an aromatic triazole—enjoys a remarkable popularity. Originally discovered out of pure chemical curiosity, and dusted off early this century as an efficient and clean bio- conjugation tool, the usefulness of cyclooctyne–azide cycloaddition is now adopted in a wide range of fields of chemical science and beyond. Its ease of operation, broad solvent compatibility, 100 % atom efficiency, and the high stability of the resulting triazole product, just to name a few aspects, have catapulted this so-called strain-promoted azide–alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) right into the top-shelf of the toolbox of chemical biologists, material scientists, biotechnologists, medicinal chemists, and more. In this chapter, a brief historic overview of cycloalkynes is provided first, along with the main synthetic strategies to prepare cycloalkynes and their chemical reactivities. Core aspects of the strain-promoted reaction of cycloalkynes with azides are covered, as well as tools to achieve further reaction acceleration by means of modulation of cycloalkyne structure, nature of azide, and choice of solvent. This one-pot process, in which three new carbon-carbon bonds and a ring are formed, affords substituted α,β-unsaturated lactones of predominantly Z-configuration. The reaction likely occurs via alkyne-carbonyl metathesis of a hydroxy-ynol ether intermediate, acid-promoted alkene E- to Z-isomerization, and lactonization.
