Inexpensive buses go up and down the coast. There is an airport in Costanza, 1/2 hour from the land, and the capital, Bucharest, 200 kilometers away, offers two international airports. In 1992 the Mongols confirmed this historic turn by giving themselves a democratic constitution.(2) The shaking off of communist rulership brought about a resurgence of Mongolian religious traditions, Buddhism and the autochthonous Mongolian religion alike.(3) In northern Mongolia, the revival of the indigenous religious traditions of the Mongols, including owō-worship, the mountain-cult and, of course, shamanism, seem to be predominant. But in the rest of Mongolia, Buddhism has experienced a massive renaissance. -

Ayur Zhanaev ORCID 0000-0002-8976-8811 University of Warsaw THE FALLING RAIN WILL STOP, THE GUEST WHO ARRIVED WILL LEAVE: ONCE AGAIN ON “INSIDER” AND “OUTSIDER” POSITIONS 1 IN THE BURYAT FIELD* 99 The fi eldwork and the problems one encounters there are an integral part of the research, and an integral part of its descrip- tion, as they illustrate the implementation of methodological knowledge in the fi eld and disclose ethical issues of the work. In most of the cases, however, authors prefer to conceal this part of the research process, fearing to betray possible deviations from “ideal” methodological standards (Thøgersen and Heimer 2006, 2). Indeed, the fi eldwork as an integral part of a PhD students’ learning process never follows forethought plans or meets all expectations, a fact which requires working out one’s individual coping strategy (Saether 2006). Ayur Zhanaev failures in the fi eld could be useful in learning and drawing conclusions, which is richly described in scholarly literature (cf. Rabinow 1977). In my opinion, the process of gathering empirical data and the role played therein by the researcher’s personality are an interesting topic to discuss. I would like to share my own fi eldwork experience, with special emphasis on the researcher’s position in the fi eld and the knowledge to which one could have access owing to it. -

Siberia and India: Historical Cultural Affinities India and Eurasia have had close social and cultural linkages, as Buddhism spread from India to Central Asia, Mongolia, Buryatia, Tuva and far wide. Buddhism provides a direct link between India and the peoples of Siberia (Buryatia, Chita, Irkutsk, Tuva, Altai, Urals etc.) who have distinctive historico-cultural affinities with the Indian Himalayas particularly due to common traditions and Buddhist culture. Revival of Buddhism in Siberia is of great importance to India in terms of restoring and reinvigorating the lost linkages. The Eurasianism of Russia, which is a Eurasian country due to its geographical situation, brings it closer to India in historical-cultural, political and economic terms. -

The article focuses on the environmental consequences of abandoning rural life, increasing urbanization and the problem of deforestation in the Baikal region, Russia. Specifically, it analyzes a recently proposed “Social Flock” project of the Buryat Buddhist community for the revival of nomadic cattle breeding in the districts of Buryatia, and its potential impact on the environment. We argue that taking into consideration the global value of the Lake Baikal, the “Social Flock” project can not only satisfy the practical needs of people and reduce the social aspects of environmental problems in Buryatia, but also potentially contribute to dealing with environmental problems of global importance. -

Journal of Global Buddhism 2020, Vol.21 261–276 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.4147509 www.globalbuddhism.org ISSN: 1527-6457 (online) © The author(s) Special Focus: Bad Buddhism In Ulan-Ude, the multi-ethnic, multi-religious capital of Buryatia, most laypeople make use of “Buddhist counseling” (Rus. priyom u lamy), or various ritual, medical and other services that ameliorate illness and misfortune. Laypeople consult lamas about a range of issues from economic to familial matters, from imp attacks to joblessness. Such Buddhist counseling is one of the most common kind of interactions with Buddhist institutions and practices in Buryatia. At the same time, it is a deeply contested practice, as local critiques refer to the rise of “consumerist”, “commercialized”, “utilitarian” or “bad” Buddhism. This article explores Buddhist counseling as a site of value-laden negotiation of post-Soviet Buddhism. It looks at normative emic notions of good Buddhist practice and their translocal sources as well as social and historical context. Keywords: Buryatia; Buddhist counseling; divination; ritual; post-socialist Buddhism n summer 2015, I was starting fieldwork in Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia.1 On one of my first days there, a Buryat friend invited me to his family outing to a Buddhist datsan2 outside of the city. On the way there, I talked with his grandmother Zoya,3 a Western Buryat who had lived in IUlan -Ude for most of her life. Keywords Siberia; Buryats; Mongols Siberia’s vast realms have often fallen outside the view of Asian Studies specialists, due perhaps to their centuries-long domination by Russia – a European power – and their lack of elaborately settled civilizations like those elsewhere in the Asian landmass. Yet Siberia has played a crucial role in Asian history. For instance, the Xiongnu, Turkic, and Mongol tribes who frequently warred with China held extensive Southern Siberian territories, and Japanese interventionists targeted Eastern Siberia during the Russian Civil War (1918- 1921). Moreover, far from being a purely ethnic-Russian realm, Siberia possesses dozens of indigenous Asian peoples, some of whom are clearly linked to other, more familiar Asian nations: for instance, the Buryats of Southeastern Siberia’s Lake Baikal region share par- ticularly close historic, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural ties with the Mongols. The Buryats, who fell under Russian rule over the seventeenth century, number over 400,000 and are the largest native Siberian group. Most dwell in the Buryat Republic, or Buryatia, which borders Mongolia to the south and whose capital is Ulan-Ude (called “Verkheneu- dinsk” during the Tsarist period); others inhabit Siberia’s neighboring Irkutsk Oblast and Zabaikal’skii Krai (formerly Chita Oblast), and tens of thousands more live in Mongolia and China. -

In this article, materials devoted to the basic stages of the life and activity of a graduate of Vilna University (1821), Professor Osip Mikhailovich Kowalewski (1801–1878), are presented. He held the first chair of Mongolian literature in Russia and Europe and served as dean and rector of Kazan University. Prof Kowalewski made scientific trips to Siberia, Buryatia, Mongolia and China (1828–1833); collected unique books, manuscripts, and ethnographic materials of the people of Central Asia; and became the author of classical works concerning Buddhism and the history, languages, literature, religions, folklore, and ethnography of the Mongolian people. A graduate of Vilna (Vilnius) University, Osip Mikhailovich Kovalevskiy (Осип Михайлович Ковалевский, 1801–1878) (henceforth the Polish rendering of his surname ‘Kowalewski’ is used) is one of the founders of Mongolian research in Russia and Europe, an outstanding scholar with a wide range of research, and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science. The name of this Russian and Polish scholar stands alongside other outstanding Russian orientalists: Christian Fren (Христиан Данилович Френ, 1782–1851), Aleksandr Kazem-Bek (Александр Касимович Казем-Бек 1802–1870), Ilya Berezin (Илья Николаевич Березин, 1818–1896), Vasiliy Bartold (Василий Владимирович Бартольд, 1869– 1930), Boris Vladimirtsov (Борис Яковлевич Владимирцов, 1884–1931), and others.
