Provost’s Message As the Interim Provosts, we are delighted to welcome you to Otis. You are joining a community of talented and dedicated artists, designers, scholars, and educators whose mission is to prepare “diverse students of art and design to enrich our world through their creativity, their skills, and their vision.” Our first-year Foundation program will teach you the critical core fundamental skills to your major; start- ing in the sophomore year, each of the studio majors will sequentially advance you through a curriculum grounded in academic excellence, advancing your work and professional preparation. The liberal studies program will complement and extend your studio experience, preparing you to better deal with the tumult of an increasingly complex and constantly changing world whose challenges demand self-reflection and creativity. Our graduate programs advance those practices through rigorous, practice-based studies with distinguished faculty. Undergraduates will participate in our Integrated Learning program, collaboratively learning in interdisci- plinary teams in projects that bridge the gap between school and community, neighborhoods and genera- tions, cultures and histories. The Sustainability Minor launches this year with an Integrated Learning course that introduces you to the current sustainability perspectives and challenges of the 21st century. Our Interdisciplinary Concentrations allow you to compose a concentration outside of your major, and our minors are defined course sequences that you may study alongside your major. Your progress, learning, and accomplishments will be evidenced by the Learning ePortfolio you will create in which you will reflec- tively make connections across disciplines, courses, and years. OTIS Ben Maltz Gallery WB Exhibition Checklist 1 | Page of 58 (2012_Jan_23) GUIDE TO THE EXHIBITION Doin’ It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman’s Building October 1, 2011–January 28, 2012 Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design Introduction “Doin’ It in Public” documents a radical and fruitful period of art made by women at the Woman’s Building—a place described by Sondra Hale as “the first independent feminist cultural institution in the world.” The exhibition, two‐volume publication, website, video herstories, timeline, bibliography, performances, and educational programming offer accounts of the collaborations, performances, and courses conceived and conducted at the Woman’s Building (WB) and reflect on the nonprofit organization’s significant impact on the development of art and literature in Los Angeles between 1973 and 1991. The WB was founded in downtown Los Angeles in fall 1973 by artist Judy Chicago, art historian Arlene Raven, and designer Sheila Levrant de Bretteville as a public center for women’s culture with art galleries, classrooms, workshops, performance spaces, bookstore, travel agency, and café. At the time, it was described in promotional materials as “a special place where women can learn, work, explore, develop their own point of view and share it with everyone. Women of every age, race, economic group, lifestyle and sexuality are welcome. Women are invited to express themselves freely both verbally and visually to other women and the whole community.” When we first conceived of “Doin’ It in Public,” we wanted to incorporate the principles of feminist art education into our process. -

Archival Body/Archival Space: Queer Remains of the Chicano Art Movement, Los Angeles, 1969-2009
ABSTRACT Title of Document: ARCHIVAL BODY/ARCHIVAL SPACE: QUEER REMAINS OF THE CHICANO ART MOVEMENT, LOS ANGELES, 1969-2009. Robert Lyle Hernandez, III, Ph.D., 2011 Directed By: Associate Professor Mary Corbin Sies, American Studies This dissertation proposes an interdisciplinary queer archive methodology I term ―archival body/archival space,‖ which recovers, interprets, and assesses the alternative archives and preservation practices of homosexual men in the Chicano Art Movement, the cultural arm of the Mexican American civil rights struggle in the U.S. Without access to systemic modes of preservation, these men generated other archival practices to resist their erasure, omission, and obscurity. The study conducts a series of archive excavations mining ―archival bodies‖ of homosexual artists from buried and unseen ―archival spaces,‖ such as: domestic interiors, home furnishings, barrio neighborhoods, and museum installations. This allows us to reconstruct the artist archive and, thus, challenge how we see, know, and comprehend ―Chicano art‖ as an aesthetic and cultural category. As such, I evidence the critical role of sexual difference within this visual vocabulary and illuminate networks of homosexual Chicano artists taking place in gay bars, alternative art spaces, salons, and barrios throughout East Los Angeles. My queer archive study model consists of five interpretative strategies: sexual agency of Chicano art, queer archival afterlife, containers of desire, archival chiaroscuro, and archive elicitation. I posit that by speaking through these artifact formations, the ―archival body‖ performs the allegorical bones and flesh of the artist, an artifactual surrogacy articulated through things. My methodological innovation has direct bearing on how sexual difference shapes the material record and the places from which these ―queer remains‖ are kept, sheltered, and displayed. -

Cut From The Same Cloth Curated by John Weston Charlie James Gallery is pleased to present Cut from the Same Linda Besemer lives and works in Los Angeles. She has Cloth, a group exhibition curated by Los Angeles-based artist exhibited at Angles Gallery and The Getty in Los Angeles, John Weston. The show gathers artists whose work exudes a deep the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Galerie Jean-Luc and Takako interest in pattern and decoration, with a specific relation to Richard in Paris, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New textiles and fabric as well as psychedelic imagery. In addition to specific studio projects in the major, Otis is integrating the teaching of sustainability into its core curriculum through courses in Foundation, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Integrated Learning. By developing an awareness of sustainability, you are better prepared to ask the right questions, to take a position, and to contribute positively to the future.
