Program Guide 26 - 28 June 2012 The 8th International Conference on Intelligent Environments http://www.intenv.org Welcome We are witnessing an historic technological revolution as computing reaches the point of maturity where it is becoming immersed in our daily life to an extent, that some decades ago, was considered science fiction. Advances in the engineering of sensing and acting capabilities, distributed in wide range of specialized devices, is providing an opportunity for the fundamental advances that computer science achieved in the past few decades to make an impact in our daily lives. This technical confluence is matched by a unique historical context, where users are better informed (and more aware of the benefits that technology can provide) and production of more complex systems is becoming increasingly affordable. Sensors and actuators deployed in a living environment (in this context, it can be any physical space like a house, an office, a classroom, a car, a street or even a virtual world, etc.) facilitate the integration of automated decision making systems that enables the provision of an intelligent environment, i.e., “a digital environment that proactively, but sensibly, supports people in their daily lives”. As the full potential for this technology become clearer to companies and the population at large, the search for innovative applications and scientific methodologies has intensified, attracting an increasing number of professionals (both in academy and industry) worldwide. The International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE'12) held at the beautiful and historic World Heritage UNESCO city of Guanajuato, Mexico is the eighth edition in a series of highly successful conferences that were organized in Colchester (United Kingdom), Athens (Greece), Ulm (Germany), Seattle (USA), Barcelona (Spain), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Nottingham (United Kingdom) in the past seven years. This year we have a program of presentations spanning over two full days which includes regular papers as well as a Posters Track, a Doctoral Colloquium and a Demo/Video Session. Three internationally leading academics: Minjuan Wang (San Diego State University, USA) , Luis Enrique Sucar (INAOE, México) and Derek Clements-Croome (Reading University, UK), and a leading industrialist: Keith Prettyjohns (CEO Innovasic Inc) will provide keynotes for this event addressing a variety of topics which will be of interest for the attendees. Co-located with the conference there is a strong workshops program featuring a variety of important topics which include Healthcare (WISHWell'12), Ambient Intelligence (AITAmI’12), Large Scale Intelligent Environments such as cities (WOLSIE’12), Intelligent Industrial Automation (IIA’12), Intelligent Educational Environments (WOFIEE'12), 1 IE´2012 Program guide Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’12), Intelligent Domestic Robots (iDR’12) and Intelligent Multimodal Interfaces Applied in Skills Transfer, Healthcare and Rehabilitation (IMIASH'12). The Intelligent Environments workshops have proved to be a source of much vitality to the conference providing an opportunity to discuss earlier research that may open up new ways to advance the area of Intelligent Environments. All papers accepted in the Workshops program are published in printed form as a volume of the Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments Series (ISI indexed) of IOS Press and electronically available through ACM Digital Library with many workshops being connected with external journals that lead to more further publishing opportunities for the authors We are very grateful to the organizing committee and, especially the local organizing committee at the Instituto Tecnológico de León who supported this event so effectively. A special mention for the direct role in the selection of content for the proceedings goes to the program committee and the external reviewers who devoted time from their busy agendas to provide feedback on the submissions. Also, we need to say a special word of thanks to thanks to our sponsors: IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society Technical Committee, CONACYT, Consejo de Ciencia y Tecnología del Estado de Guanajuato, Sistemas de Innovación para la Competitividad SINNCO, DGEST, Instituto Tecnológico de León, Guanajuato Tecno Parque, Parque CIEN Tecnológico de Monterrey, Taylor & Francis Group, IOS Press. Finally, we want to make explicit our deep gratitude to all the researchers, who are the soul of this event and whose inspired research provides our conference with latest advances of this fascinating area; your presence makes the IE conferences the very special experience it is. We welcome you all to IE’12 and hope you enjoy the conference and venue. Best wishes, Vic Callaghan, University of Essex, United Kingdom Juan Carlos Augusto, University of Ulster, United Kingdom IE 2012 Programme Chairs Victor Zamudio, Instituto Tecnológico de León, México IE 2012 General Chair Simon Egerton, Monash University, Malaysia IE 2012 Publications Chair 2 IE´2012 Program guide IE´2012 Program guide Tuesday 26th of June Wednesday 27th of June Thursday 28th of June P RO G R A M Keynote: Minjuan Wang Industrial Forum Keynote: Keith Pretttyjohns* INDUSTRIAL FORUM AND RECEPTION CONFERENCE COCKTAIL AND BANQUET Salón Terraza Casa Colorada 3 WORKSHOPS AITAmI: Salón San Javier • Structured Light and Shape Descriptors for Automatic 3D Object Classification by Daniel GARCIA, Manuel ORNELAS, Raul SANTIAGO, Hector PUGA and Martin CARPIO • Real Time Activity Recognition Using a Cell Phone’s Accelerometer and Wi-Fi by Enrique A.
