Reviewed by Karolyn Smardz Frost (Atkinson College School of Arts and Letters, York University) Published on H-Canada (July, 2008) Recreating the Black Refugees Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860 is a wonderful book. Far more than the sum of its parts, this slim volume focuses on several critical themes while expertly detailing the history of an important segment of the African Diaspora. Harvey Amani Whitfield, an assistant professor at the University of Vermont, demonstrates how African Americans from different parts of the United States, slave and free, who fought in the British forces in the War of 1812 came to found families, cultural institutions, and communities on Nova Scotia's inhospitable soil. He further details their subsequent development as a community and as a new, hybrid culture. This, Whitfield maintains, came about largely because of the hardships the so-called Black Refugees faced, not the least of which was the unrelenting and pervasively discriminatory treatment these brave and hardworking people encountered in their adopted Maritime home. The story of Nova Scotia's Black Refugees is generally less well known than that of the earlier migrants from the United States, the Black Loyalists. -

Learn more here. A piece by the Liberty Africa Writers highlights an enslaved Ghanaian woman named Breffu who led a revolt against the Danish army stationed in the West Indies in 1733. Read more about Breffu’s revolt here. A new podcast episode by Teaching Tolerance explores the relationship between the institution of slavery and indigenous populations in North America. The episode, "Indigenous Enslavement," is hosted by Hasan Kwame Jeffries and Meredith McCoy and features an interview with Christina Snyder who discusses how European invasion changed indigenous ideas about bondage. In her article, “A Downtown Jackson Alley Was Renamed After a Woman Who Escaped Slavery," Sarah Clinkscales details the renaming and transformation of a street in Jackson City, Michigan, to honor Emma Nichols, an enslaved woman who came to the city on the Underground Railroad. Territorial stigmatisation, gendered racism and young people’s agency in a multi-ethnic school Suvi Keskinen Introduction Young people belonging to racialised minorities are at the centre of many problem filled discourses and moral panics in today’s Europe. Minority youth are mentioned as a problem in public discussions of school drop-out and unemployment, the hijab and other Muslim women’s bodily coverage, and riots and other disturbances in the minority-dense impoverished residence areas. The problems have often been located in minority families and the generational relations within these. Scholars have identified a ‘crisis of multiculturalism’ discourse that has characterised media and politics in several European countries during the last decade (Grillo, 2007; Lentin & Titley, 2011; Vertovec & Wessendorf, 2010). Within this discourse, circulating across national borders with only a few local modifications, especially Muslims and non-western minorities are claimed to have established ‘parallel societies’ with illiberal cultures, oppression of women and fertile ground for terrorism, a process allegedly made possible by the politically correct and naïve proponents of multiculturalism among the (white majority) elite. As a result, racialised minorities have been confronted with increasing scrutiny and demands on integration and assimilation by leading politicians and authorities. In this chapter, I will look at how minority young people search for ways to build their lives, gain respectability and perform agency in a societal context characterised by the previously mentioned processes. The focus will be on the gendered and sexualised aspects of racism, as they are lived out by young people in a multi-ethnic suburb in Finland, and the different strategies they develop to question, ignore and disturb such practices. -

Cultural Assets of NovA scotiA African Nova scotian tourism Guide 2 Come visit the birthplace of Canada’s Black community. Situated on the east coast of this beautiful country, Nova Scotia is home to approximately 20,000 residents of African descent. Our presence in this province traces back to the 1600s, and we were recorded as being present in the provincial capital during its founding in 1749. Come walk the lands that were settled by African Americans who came to the Maritimes—as enslaved labour for the New England Planters in the 1760s, Black Loyalists between 1782 and 1784, Jamaican Maroons who were exiled from their home lands in 1796, Black refugees of the War of 1812, and Caribbean immigrants to Cape Breton in the 1890s. The descendants of these groups are recognized as the indigenous African Nova Scotian population. We came to this land as enslaved and free persons: labourers, sailors, farmers, merchants, skilled craftspersons, weavers, coopers, basket-makers, and more. We brought with us the remnants of our cultural identities as we put down roots in our new home and over time, we forged the two together and created our own unique cultural identity. Today, some 300 years later, there are festivals and gatherings throughout the year that acknowledge and celebrate the vibrant, rich African Nova Scotian culture. The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 by Bakary Gibba A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Bakary Gibba (2011) The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Bakary Gibba Department of History, University of Toronto Abstract This thesis investigates the efforts of the West Indian Church to establish and run a fascinating Mission in an area of West Africa already influenced by Islam or traditional religion. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths -
