  • Colonisation of the Mariana Islands: New Evidence and Implications for Human Movements V 479
1 New evidence and implications ' for human movements in the Western Pacific John L. Craib Archaeologist Introduction Within the last five years, archaeological investigations on Saipan, ?inian and Guam has changed our understanding of the early period of human occupation in the Mariana Islands (Figure l). This work has not only extended the antiquity of human presence in these islands, it has provided a more detailed sample of the cultural assemblage asso- ciated with this early settlement. While increasing our knowledge of the prehistory of the Marianas, these new data, at the same time, offer important implications for human movement in the western Pacific. This paper provides a brief overview of recent fin- dings and discusses possible origins of the founding population in the Marianas and the implications this has for general movement within the western Pacific. Early sites in the Mariana Islands Two sites on Saipan, Chalan Piao and Achugao, are now dated to between 3000- 3600 cal BP; the calibrated age range at Unai Chulu, on Tinian, straddles 3000 BP. The assemblage recovered from these three sites include finely made pottery, much of it red- 478 V Le Pacifique de 5000 A 2000 avant le present /The Pacific from 5000 to 2000 BP I Figure 1 Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific. • The Archaeology of the Ogasawara Islands
The Archaeology of the Ogasawara Islands Received March 1983 SHlzua aDA INTRODUCTION HE 30 -ODD ISLANDS and shoals that comprise the Ogasawara Islands lie in an area 1000-1300 km south-southeast ofTokyo, extending from 24°14' to 27°45' north T latitude and 141 °16' to 142°26' east longitude. From north to south the group consists of the Mukojima Islands, the Chichijima Islands, the Hahajima Islands, and the Volcano Islands. Climatically the group belongs to the oceanic subtropics; however, due to warm-water currents in the area, the climate is tropical. Geographically the Ogasawaras are located in the center of an arc formed between the Izu Islands and the Marianas, per pendicular to Japan. The group is connected to Japan through the Izu Islands and also, through the Okinawan Islands and Taiwan, to Malaysia and India in the tropics. More over, it is also connected geographically in the South to the tropical Pacific islands of Micronesia and distant Polynesia (Fig. 1). From a study of documents of the Edo Period, it appears that the Ogasawara Islands were uninhabited through the eighteenth century. In European records from the same periods, the Ogasawaras are referred to as the Bonin Islands (apparently a corruption of the Japanese "munin" or "empty ofmen") and are noted as being devoid ofhuman occu pation. Today, however, from the results of archaeological research carried out in the South Pacific, it appears that Stone Age man was widely dispersed through the islands of the Pacific. Thus any consideration ofsuch questions as the polished stone adzes of Kita Iwojima; the agate, sandstone, and coral artifacts from Chichijima; and the bone and cowry-shell artifacts from Hahajima must take into account the navigational capabilities Shizuo Oda is a member of the Department of Culture, Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education.

Cultural deposits dating to the Pre-Latte Phase (c. 3500 to 1000 years before present [BP]) in Tumon Bay and East Agana Bay have yielded mostly bivalves, while Latte Phase (c. 1000 years BP to AD 1521) deposits have yielded most- ly gastropods, especially Strombus. However, in Latte Phase shell assemblages from southern Guam, bivalves consistently outweigh gas- tropods, but there are changes in the relative abundance of the various bivalve species. Relative sea level decline may explain the differences between the earlier and later shell assemblages from Tumon Bay and East Agana Bay. The geology of Guam probably accounts for the dif- ferences between the shell assemblages from Tumon Bay and East Agana Bay compared with assemblages from sites farther south. Introduction Archaeological research on Guam within the last 20 years has produced a wealth of data including information about the marine mollusks collected and consumed by the prehistoric and historic people. Changes have been observed in the species composition of marine shell middens from one part of the island to another and from one time period to another in the same area, and questions have been raised about the causes and significance of the changes.
