Too often organists, ministers, and laity take the matter of hymn singing too casually. Hopefully, this music may be used to give greater dimension, new life and color to Christian worship services and perhaps be a springboard for encouraging others to "give forth" with their own creative talents. I have been greatly influenced and inspired by the improvising and great service playing of Dr. Nita Akin, Piet Kee, and Dr. Paul Manz to whom this work is affectionately dedicated. Robert E. Gulbransen DIGITAL HYMNAL DH-200 Master Index The Master Index allows easy access to all of the thousands of hymns pre-programmed into the GULBRANSEN DIGITAL HYMNAL. The Master Index contains the specific hymn title and the tune name arranged in alphabetical order together with the hymn master reference number. For example, to play the hymn “Word of God, Across the Ages”, select the Master Index code 9000, plus the master reference number (found in the Master Index) which is 492. Simply press k b b b plus ENTER and f k d plus ENTER then PLAY. Another convenient way to use the Hymnal is to refer to one of the many popular hymn books that have already been indexed internally by GULBRANSEN. You will then have words and music to use with the Hymnal performance. For example, to play hymns from The Baptist Hymnal, select code 9001 When selecting a hymn such as “Word of God, Across the Ages” (number 262 in The Baptist Hymnal), simply press k b b c plus ENTER and d h d plus ENTER then PLAY. The Hymnal always remembers the specific hymn book that you have selected until it is explicitly told to switch to a different one. It even remembers when it is turned off or the battery is removed. Due to copyright and publisher restrictions, some hymns found in your particular hymn book may not be available and therefore inaccessible on the Hymnal. However, the thousands of hymns listed in the Master Index are not restricted and can be played. • Master Song List
Master Index . First Lines are listed in upper and lower case letters. TUNE NAMES and SONG TITLES are listed in all UPPER CASE (CAPITAL) letters. Some entries may be repeated with different reference numbers. This usually indicates that either the musical arrangements of these tunes were sufficiently different to justify separate recordings, or they are distinctly different tunes. Naming discrepancies between hymn books can result in a tune being listed more than once (with different reference numbers) even though each number produces the same musical result. • EXPLORING the MUSICAL RICHES in Evangelical Lutheran Worship
EXPLORING THE MUSICAL RICHES IN Evangelical Lutheran Worship Leader’s materials Goals • To provide an opportunity for people from many congregations to sing hymns and songs together. • To acquaint anyone who loves the music of the church with the variety of music in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, especially "gems" old and new, largely unnoticed by much of the church. • To encourage the congregations of this church to enlarge and diversify their repertoire in worship. • To provide tangible examples of how this church's Principles for Worship (Music and the Christian Assembly) influenced the hymns and songs editorial team as they made decisions about what should be in ELW. • To encourage all those responsible for making musical decisions in congregations to know and use the Principles for Worship in their own planning and work. When and how to use this material The material contained in this module may be used in a variety of ways, such as: • A self-contained workshop (perhaps a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon). • In small units (several examples at a time) throughout another event, such as a synod assembly or other gathering. • In combination with another module, such as Leading Assembly Singing. • However used, there should be a lot of singing together. Organization of material Because of the multiple uses intended and the variety of leadership or intended audiences, this module does not provide a defined structure and complete text. Rather, it is a compilation of annotated examples and information that can be used in various combinations and adapted for each unique context. Twelve of the Principles for Worship (Music and the Christian Assembly) serve as headings for the annotated examples (pages 3-19).
