About Studio Drift ABOUT STUDIO DRIFT 2019 BIOGRAPHY STUDIO DRIFT BIOGRAPHY Studio Drift was established in 2007 by Lonneke Gordijn (1980) and Ralph Nauta (1978), who both graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven (NL) in 2005. In their installations and interactive sculptures the relationship between nature/human/technology is key. Gordijn’s fascination for nature and that of Nauta for science fiction and technology intersect in an intriguing way. Over more than a decade of their existence, Studio Drift’s work in product and furniture design has evolved into increasingly larger, often site-specific and moving installations which they have realized all over the world. The works occupy a wholly unique place between disciplines such as tech art, performance and biodesign. Data and algorithms derived from natural phenomena often form the basis for Studio Drift’s work – the flight 2 patterns of a flock of birds, for instance. With the help of state-of-the-art technologies they translate this data into poetic, meditative experiences. Their ideas regularly anticipate technological possibilities. This is why they collaborate with scientists, programmers, engineers, and other specialists in the development of projects. Studio Drift is represented by Pace Gallery (a.o. London and New York), taking part in the gallery’s FuturePace program, and is represented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery with whom Studio Drift has been collaboration since 2009. Installations by Studio Drift are exhibited worldwide at leading museums, fairs and institutes such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (NL), World Expo Shanghai (CN), Miami Basel, Miami (US), Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (NL), M.A.D.     ABOUT DRIFT 2020 BIOGRAPHY DRIFT BIOGRAPHY Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn (1980) and Ralph Nauta (1978) founded DRIFT in 2007. With a multi-disciplinary team of 64, they work on experiential sculptures, installations and performances. DRIFT manifests the phenomena and hidden properties of nature with the use of technology in order to learn from the Earth’s underlying mechanisms and to re- establish our connection to it. With both depth and simplicity, DRIFT’s works of art illuminate parallels between man-made and natural structures through deconstructive, interactive, and innovative processes. The artists raise fundamental questions about what life is and explore a positive scenario for the future. All individual artworks have the ability to transform spaces. The confined parameters of a museum or a gallery does not always do justice to a body of work, rather it often comes to its potential in the public sphere or through architecture.     STUDIO DRIFT | ARTIST BIOGRAPHY STUDIO DRIFT ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Studio Drift is an artists’ studio founded in 2006 by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn that explores the relationship between nature, technology, and mankind. The studio’s philosophy is based on creating a dialogue between opposites. Its work comes to life via ongoing collaboration with scientists, university research facilities, computer programmers, and engineers. Studio Drift’s sculptures are site-specific art installations that react directly to human behavior but question it at the same time. Studio Drift proposes a distinct mix between hi-tech and poetic imagery. Fragile Future III conveys emotion while simultaneously referencing the fact that light lies at the basis of all life. Fragile Future III is a modular work. It is created in the form of a limited edition collection and custom made installations are created on commission. It consists of three-dimensional bronze electrical circuits connected to light emitting dandelions. It was developed in collaboration with the Carpenters Workshop Gallery and won a Light of the Future award from the German Design Council in 2008. The Fragile Future III Concrete Chandelier won the Moët Hennessy-PAD London Prize in 2010 and was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 2011, Fragile Future III won the top prize at the summer exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague. Studio Drift’s work has been shown at many fairs and museums, including the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Design Miami/Basel, Art Paris Art Fair, Dubai Design Week, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

During this year´s Art Basel in Miami Beach the BMW Group will present two major cultural collaborations: The world premiere of “FRANCHISE FREEDOM – a flying sculpture by Studio Drift in partnership with BMW” created by Amsterdam based artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta. After sunset, 300 illuminated drones will simulate a flock of birds above the ocean and beach. In addition, the new work of BMW Art Journey winner Max Hooper Schneider will be on display at the BMW Lounge. Studio Drift’s new work during Art Basel in Miami Beach “FRANCHISE FREEDOM – a flying sculpture by Studio Drift in partnership with BMW” is a performative artwork at the interface between technology, science, and art. An autonomous flying swarm of 300 drones, each equipped with a light source, will imitate the natural phenomenon of a flock on December 6, 9 PM on the beach of Miami above the sea between 32nd and 33rd Street off Collins Avenue behind the Faena Hotel Miami Beach. This is the first time that a flock on this scale is presented by machines working with decentralized algorithms. Inspired by the spectacle of starlings clustering together in massive flocks and exposing the tension between individual freedom and safety in numbers, Studio Drift questions the delicate balance between the group and the individual.

They do this by playing with new and existing relationships between nature, technology, and mankind. At first glance, the works seem to refer to familiar situations, but on further inspection these references become curious- ly questionable. Through the use of advanced technology and detailed craftsmanship, each of the works attempts to make some sort of future prediction. This challenges the limits of what is considered possible, ultimately advancing the boundaries each time. With research being an impor- tant part of Drift’s process, the studio frequently collabo- rates with scientists, university departments and facilities, computer programmers, and engineers.
