TEAM GAMES 5 Any game which provides opportunities to two or more players working together towards a shared objective is called a team game. A team game is an activity in which individuals are organised in a team to compete with the opposing team, in accordance with a set of laws/rules to win. Games like Basketball, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Volleyball, etc., are some of the classic examples of major team games. However, over a period of time, the popularity of team games has grown continuously. These games have positively influenced not just the players, but also their fans, local and national economies. All over the world, the impact of team games can be seen resulting in professional players to live out their dreams. Star players have become role models to youth. Young athletes/players develop life skills which are followed as footsteps of their role models. In this chapter, some of the team games like Basketball, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, and Volleyball are explained. BASKETBALL Basketball is a team game played between two teams of five players each, on the court. Very high amount of energy (calories) expenditure is there in this game. It also helps in building bone and muscle strength and boosts the immune system. This game also develops self-discipline and concentration among young players. Mar - Apr 17 Issue Photo credits : Nilanjan Dutta Congratulations Aizawl FC on winning the I-League 2017 President’s Corner Congratulations Aizawl on winning the I-League. Their story has been a fairy tale. We have been talking about Leicester City but Aizawl achievement is nothing less. They have gone from strength to strength in this league and Khalid Jamil should take full credit for this. His team has been mentally strong and has churned out results when the time came. Aizawl’s victory is a victory for the whole of North East which has been a nursery for football talent for over 3 decades now. Our players have been going outside the state to give their services to the big clubs in Goa , Calcutta and now Bengaluru but with the rise of Aizawl and Neroca (who also look destined to qualify for the I-league) our players can be at home and follow their passion beside earning a living. The Indian national team also started off their Asian Cup qualifying campaign with an away win. Though the win wasn’t the most convincing one the boys should take a lot of heart from it and prepare better for the next match which I believe is at home. A win would mean 6 points in the first two matches which would be a huge step towards qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup in Dubai. The team is very talented and hard working. Honestly I don’t see any reason of not qualifying for the Asian Cup. I wish Coach Stephen Constantine and his wards the best for their quest for UAE 2019.

REPORT Round Table Meeting Organized by CEQUIN & supported by UNDP 'Road map for Women's Soccer in India: Challenges and Strategies for Action’ 1st October, 2013, New Delhi Prepared on behalf of CEQUIN By Udiksha Batra, LL.B, LL.M., Consultant 1 INTRODUCTION SPORTS: A HUMAN RIGHT “…sports is a birthright. We humans are the only species on earth that take part in sport and we deserve to have access to the joys that sports bring.”1 -Anita DeFrantz, Executive Board, International Olympic Committee and former Olympic medalist International Law recognizes sport as a basic human right. The right to play sports has its roots in the bedrock of human right legislation, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)2, however it was only with the adoption of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) International Charter of Physical Education and Sport (ICPES) that a clear and specific right was granted.3 This right paved the way for specific obligations being imposed upon the State by International Law, among them, obligations with regard to youth and sport and women and sport. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) imposes an obligation to ensure that the child’s education includes development of the child’s personality, talents and physical ability4. With regard to women, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) places accountability on the State to take appropriate action to ensure the fulfillment of the right to engage in sports.5 Furthermore, international law has stepped beyond merely granting rights and imposing obligations, it has started recognizing the importance of sports as a tool for development.
